Larry Payne, 16, died March 28, 1968, the only fatality in a day of riots and looting in the aftermath of a sanitation workers' march led by King. More than 60 people were injured. King would later telephone Lizzie Payne to console her. He planned to visit her in her public housing apartment at Fowler Homes. Before he could visit, he too was dead, his murder overshadowing Larry Payne's death and turning the 16-year-old into a historical footnote except to his family.

About Hope '65
Description: This is an artwork that deals with the 100 year or century worth of struggle it took for African Americans to get their civil and human rights officially acknowledged and enforced by the U.S.A. as articulated by the passage of both The 13th Amendment of 1865 (which prohibits slavery and involuntary servitude) and The Voting Rights Act of 1965 (which makes it illegal to discriminate against African Americans in voting) respectfully. In both cases a civil war as well as civil disobedience had to be waged to make these changes happen as witnessed by history through The American Civil War of the 1860s and The American Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. The old woman represents the collectively resilient and indomitable spirit of millions of enslaved Africans held in bondage for several generations in America while the baby represents the new hope or potential for generations of free African Americans to hopefully come, a freedom truly earned through blood, sweat and tears.

Obama Carefully Courts Black Votes With Sharpton

Official White House Photo by Pete Souza
The Rev. Al Sharpton was known for his activist, racially polarizing views. Recently, he has become a key ally for President Obama, pictured in an Oval Office meeting last year.
Obama Carefully Courts Black Votes With Sharpton

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- He avoids race, so the story goes. He can't afford to alienate white voters, black people will vote for him again anyway, so he has little to gain by approaching such a volatile subject.

Yet on Wednesday, President Barack Obama is scheduled to make a foray into racial territory by speaking in New York at the Rev. Al Sharpton's national convention -- an early step on the tricky path that Obama must navigate in order to engage black voters who are crucial to his re-election.

On the one hand, there's nothing unusual about a president fulfilling a campaign promise made to a staunch political ally whose radio show is broadcast in 40 cities each weekday. Nor is it odd for Obama, who has spoken to other civil rights groups, to connect with Sharpton, a frequent White House visitor whose fame flows from his aggressive brand of black advocacy.

Aside from the timing of Obama's speech -- two days after his re-election bid was made official -- Wednesday's events at the National Action Network gathering are heavily political. Obama's top campaign aide, David Axelrod, is to address a special plenary, followed by the secretaries of education and housing, the attorney general and the EPA administrator.

Obama remains highly popular among blacks. In 2008, 95 percent of blacks who voted chose Obama. In a Gallup poll last week, 84 percent of blacks approved of Obama's overall performance, about the same percentage as six months ago.

So why all the attention now?

It's actually harder for Obama to reach out to black voters than it would be for a white president, said Mark Anthony Neal, an African-American studies professor at Duke University, "because there's a narrative that he's catering to a black constituency."

"Obama needs Al Sharpton as a certain kind of surrogate for black voters," Neal said. "Symbolically, his willingness to speak at the convention is a subtle message to black voters that he is paying attention to their concerns.

"Because that's the other side of the narrative ... there is a heavy critique of Obama among black voters for not being cognizant and attentive enough to issues affecting the black community."

A factor in this dilemma is the view among some whites that the president gives blacks favorable treatment. Carol Swain, a Vanderbilt University political science professor and Obama critic, called that view a misperception, but said it was fed by cases like the New Black Panther voter intimidation lawsuit and the Justice Department asking Dayton, Ohio, to lower its police exam passing score because too few black applicants passed.

This dynamic may have made Obama "overly defensive" about race, said Bill Anderson, a host on the Philadelphia black talk radio station WURD.

"But think about it," Anderson said. "If the president speaks to an entire room of white people, nobody says he's alienating society. But if you go to an organization that's dealing with (issues) important to society but from an African-American perspective, all of a sudden, you're a separatist."

That's how some view Sharpton.

As his National Action Network celebrates 20 years of fighting for social change and justice, Sharpton's methods and image have evolved. President George W. Bush publicly praised him for leadership on education, and Sharpton joined arch-conservative Newt Gingrich on a 2009 national tour advocating for better schools.

Six Democratic presidential candidates came to Sharpton's convention in 2007, and Sharpton remembers Obama promising that win or lose, he would return. Now Obama will be the first sitting president to attend.

Yet some still consider Sharpton to be the rabble-rousing, pompadoured agitator of the 1980s who spread Tawana Brawley's unproven claim about being sexually assaulted by white men and, in a separate case, exhorted protests that ended with eight dead at a Jewish-owned store in Harlem.

Sharpton is used to the criticism, even when it comes from black people. "It's a burden you bear gladly," he said in an interview. "I'm doing a job people would rather not see done."

The National Action Network website lists 42 chapters nationwide and claims 200,000 members. In addition to his 40-city radio reach, Sharpton is on satellite radio and leads a weekly Harlem rally.

"I'm probably talking to more people than most activists have ever done," Sharpton said. "I know what's on people's minds, and I'm able to mobilize them."

He also has a strong connection to what Obama adviser and Harvard University law professor Charles Ogletree once called "the streets ... the people who are voiceless, faceless and powerless."

These are the people bearing the brunt of the 15.5 percent black unemployment rate reported in March, up from 15.3 percent in February. The overall national rate in March was 8.8 percent, a two-year low.

The president "is going with Sharpton to show us some support some kind of way," Ilsa Lilly Fields, a black woman, said as she left a West Philadelphia drugstore Tuesday.

Fields made a face when Sharpton's name was mentioned: "He's just loud and always in everyone's business. He's not a helpful person."

But she said Obama was doing the best he could to help blacks: "We're a patient people. We know what Obama has to do. We're just waiting for him to do it."

Swain, the political scientist, said even though Obama has not addressed black issues, blacks remain protective of him -- "almost like a member of the family."

"Black people are in many ways worse off today than they have been in decades," she said. "They're worse off than if there was a white president, because a white president has to do something for the black community. Obama doesn't have to do anything."

Across the street from the drugstore, inside Yock's Sandwich-Ville USA, out-of-work plumber Benjamin Ryan said many whites in his union complain that Obama is favoring blacks.

"It's just the way they're raised," said Ryan, who is white. "It's far from the truth, but it's what they're exposed to."

Ryan's wife, Sharletta, who is black, said Obama visiting Sharpton's conference is just "playing a typical game of politics." She approves of his performance as president, but called Sharpton a "race pimp."

Ryan predicted Obama would not get as many white votes in 2012 as he did in 2008, "so getting out the black vote is going to be huge."

Anderson, the talk show host, said Obama's visit sends a message: "This is something I need to do, and (critics) are just going to have to deal with it."

Racialicious: On Teachers Calling Kids “Future Criminals” And The School To Prison Pipeline

Tha Artivist Says: We must understand rather we must overstand that the system is succeeding in creating a permanent poverty and  prison class of people at the expense of either our collective naivete, lack of passion, or lack of a sincere rectifying purpose/strategy on this issue...The system is not broken or failing it is working towards perfection in warehousing generations of potential freedom fighters and people advocates...We must seek alternatives outside of the draconian matrix that many of us are literally dying to be a part of as well as stay apart of...this is almost like folks thinking they are going to be rich by giving selfish wealthy folks and corporations tax breaks...You can wish, dream and hope all you want but things don't happen unless you work to make them happen...slavery can only die when you decide that you want to be free anddo something about it!!!

Racialicious: On Teachers Calling Kids “Future Criminals” And The School To Prison Pipeline

MISSISSIPPI DRUG WAR BLUES: The Case Of Cory Maye

Update (November 20, 2009): On Tuesday of this week, the Mississippi State Court of Appeals ordered a new trial for Cory Maye. This is heartening news for Maye, who has been in prison since December of 2001. Defense attorney Bob Evans said of the decision, "I am, needless to say, delighted. I'm just ecstatic. We hoped against hope all along that this would happen." Reason senior editor Radley Balko, who has written extensively about the case, had this to say: "At worst, he's guilty of poor judgment under some pretty traumatic circumstances. He had no criminal record, wasn't a drug dealer and has been a model prisoner. Cory Maye isn't a threat to society. Let him go back to Monticello to be a father."

Update (February 9, 2009): We're proud to announce that Mississippi Drug War Blues: The Case of Cory Maye, by writer-producer Paul Feine and editor-producer Roger M. Richards, was awarded the Best Documentary Short prize at the 2009 Oxford Film Festival in Oxford, Mississippi.

Mississippi Drug War Blues originally aired on May 7, 2008.

At 11p.m on December 26, 2001 police in Prentiss, Mississippi raided the residence of Cory Maye, a 21-year-old father who was at home with his 18-month-old daughter Ta'Corriana.

The cops were looking for drugs and smashed through the back door. In the ensuing chaos, Maye hunkered down with his daughter in a bedroom and when the police broke down that door, he fired three bullets, one of which killed Officer Ron Jones. Maye testified in court that the police did not identify themselves until after they had entered his residence; indeed, he testified that they did not identify themselves until after he had fired his shots. Once they did, he said he put his weapon on the floor, slid it toward police, and surrendered.

The police, who refused to talk with reason.tv, tell a different story. They claim that they identified themselves multiple times before entering Maye's house and bedroom, and that there was no way Maye couldn't have known who they were. A jury rejected Maye's case that he was acting in self-defense and he was sentenced to death for the murder of Officer Ron Jones.

"Mississippi Drug War Blues" is a story about the intersection of race (Maye is black and Jones was white); the war on drugs; the disturbing increase in the militarization of police tactics; and systemic flaws in the criminal justice and expert-testimony systems.

It is a tragedy in which one man is dead and another may spend his life in prison.

It is the subject of an October 2006 story in reason by Senior Editor Radley Balko, whose coverage of the case led to Cory Maye receiving new legal representation and his death sentence being changed to life in prison. To read the original story, please go here.

In September 2006, Cory Maye's new legal team of Robert Evans and lawyers from the Washington, D.C.-based firm of Covington and Burling was given two days to argue their post-trial motion that his guilty verdict should either be overturned or that he should be granted a new trial.

After the hearing, the judge ordered a new sentencing trial, determining that Maye's trial attorney was competent during the guilt phase of his trial, but incompetent during the death penalty phase. He ruled against all of the remaining defense arguments, including concerns about confidential informant Randy Gentry, discrepancies in police testimony, the venue for the trial, and problems with controlling precedent in the state with respect to self-defense.

Prosecutors eventually agreed to drop their pursuit of the death penalty. Earlier this year, Maye was again sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Because of the delays associated with acquiring new representation, Cory Maye's case in May 2008 is still in the early stages of his appeal. His legal team anticipates the case will be heard in the fall.

If the Mississippi State Court of Appeals denies Maye relief, he'll then appeal to the Mississippi State Supreme Court. If he's again denied relief, he'll begin his federal appeal process in the United States District Court in the Southern District of Mississippi, and then to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

In early 2008, a state district court judge in Mississippi denied attempts by Maye's attorneys to bring in Dr. Steven Hayne for questioning (Hayne, who performed the autopsy of Ron Jones, was a key witness for the prosecution). Maye's lawyers had hoped to question Hayne under oath about recent revelations about Hayne's questionable autopsy procedures and questionable credentials, first reported in reason, then touted by the Innocence Project and its Mississippi chapter. Maye's lawyers plan to raise their concerns about Hayne in the appeal.

Cory Maye is currently housed in Unit 32, the high-security wing at Mississippi's Parchman Penitentiary. His daughter Ta'Corrianna lives in Covington, Louisiana with her mother Chanteal Longino. His son Cory, Jr. lives in Jackson, Mississippi.

Hampton Sides: Remembering Martin Luther King As A Man, Not A Saint

Remembering Martin Luther King As A Man, Not A Saint
By Hampton Sides, Sunday, April 3, 2011
Washington Post

MEMPHIS

Forty-three years ago today Martin Luther King Jr. was slain here on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. Within hours of his death, as the nation erupted in flames, lawmakers began to propose a national holiday in his name. Today, King is enshrined in the pantheon of our greatest heroes — an icon, a saint, untouchable.

King will become further enshrined in our public memory in August, when the four-acre memorial to him officially opens on the Mall. The King we remember will remain frozen in time: Aug. 28, 1963, the day he delivered the Dream Speech.

But the King who came to Memphis in April of 1968 was a very different man from the one we’ve come to venerate. A fierce critic of the Vietnam War, King had begun to preach an uncomfortable gospel that involved the radical redistribution of wealth. As he became more controversial, his popularity had sagged. Key allies in Washington had abandoned him. He’d gained weight, was sleeping poorly, and was drinking and smoking more. He received frequent death threats. His marriage was strained from his travels and dalliances. One of his mistresses, in fact, was staying at the Lorraine the night before he was killed.

His peripatetic life — what his aides called his “War on Sleep” — had taken a tremendous toll on King’s body, soul and psyche. He talked increasingly of giving it all up and going on a long sabbatical. “Martin Luther King is finished,” he said at his lowest moment in Memphis, a week before he was killed.

Which is to say that King was a human being: flawed, vulnerable, uncertain about the future, subject to appetites and buffeted by the extraordinary stresses of his position. His civil rights cause was holy, but he was a sinner. His place in the American canon seemed far from inevitable in the spring of 1968.

Hollywood, uncertain how to deal with a saint, has only recently begun to grapple with the sturm und drang of his life story. Four major film projects are in development, including an HBO miniseries produced by Oprah Winfrey and based on the trilogy by Taylor Branch; a Steven Spielberg-driven, King family-approved biopic a la Gandhi; and a drama about the Selma marches possibly starring Will Smith.

Hopefully these and other portrayals will not seek to sanitize Martin Luther King. We have no use for Hallmark heroes — airbrushed, Photoshopped, simon-pure. We need to see King in all his pathos, imperfection and messy ambiguity. In the end, that’s the only way we can relate to his struggles or appreciate his greatness. Through his moments of very human doubt and disappointment, King remained true to the message of nonviolence at a time when the world seemed on the brink of self-annihilation. The night before he was killed, while tornado warnings wailed outside, he spoke of the threats that were out there from “our sick white brothers.” Yet he found a way to preach through his apprehensions, crying out triumphantly: “I’m not fearing any man!”

As we mark the anniversary of his death — in Memphis a full-day commemoration will feature former U.N. ambassador Andrew Young — we need to stay mindful of King’s flesh-and-blood humanity. By draping him in a halo glow, we do him little honor. By fashioning him into a fleshless icon, we place his achievements at a sterile remove. By calling our heroes superhuman we also let ourselves off the hook: Why do the hard work of bettering the world if that’s something only saints do? What made King’s eloquence so ferocious and his courage so stirring was that, like the Memphis garbage workers he came to represent, he was a man.

Hampton Sides, a writer born in Memphis, is the author of “Hellhound on His Trail,” a narrative history of the King assassination and manhunt. An updated edition of his book was released in paperback last week.

TEXAS INJUSTICE: BOBBY YATES – WRONGFUL CONVICTION IN THE MAKINGS

(Lamar County Texas, City of Paris), TX – 3/20/2010 --  Residing in the deeply troubled  and racist town of Paris, Texas lives a Black gentleman who has suffered a lower body amputation including a penectomy.  Mr. Bobby Yates, age 51, lost his lower limbs and lower body as a result of a hunting accident 20 years ago.

On Wed. March 23, 2011, Bobby Yates is facing jury selection for the sexual assault of a 16 year old white girl.  On March 18, 2008 Yates was attacked in his home and called 911. The 911 tape clearly plays his cries for assistance but, the police report says otherwise. Bobby Yates is yet another wrongful conviction in the makings.

A photo of Yates was taken for the grand jury indictment and he appears to be standing in that photograph. His height is not included with the grand jury information.  Mr. Yates is not able to stand as he has no legs.

Bobby Yates is scheduled for jury selection on Wed. March 23, 2011. His court appointed attorney has filed a motion to withdraw as attorney of record. That motion has not been heard to date. Bobby would be pleased with the attorney's removal as he has not prepared for his case properly, refused to acquire expert witness testimony and has tried to coerce Yates into a plea deal.  Masses are needed in the courthouse on Wednesday March 23, 2011 where jury selection is scheduled in the case of The State Of Texas v. Boby Yates.

The Plight Of Bobby Yates
By Brenda Cherry

Bobby Yates’ Lower Body Was Amputated

Bobby Yates lived in Ridgeview Town homes for 5 years without problems. Bobby lost the lower part of his body due to a hunting accident which occurred over 20 years ago. Bobby had no criminal history. On March 18, 2008 at approx 1:30 or 2 AM, Bobby Yates got a knock on his door that would change his life.

A 16 year old white female and two adult white males, asked Bobby if they could enter into his home claiming they were locked out of their own homes. Bobby reluctantly allowed them in. Several hours later, Bobby made a 911 call. He told the operator that three people were in his home threatening his life and he was afraid of them and they would not leave. He said one of the three assaulted him by beating him in his face. Bobby can be heard on the 911 call telling the group to get out of his home and telling them not to come near him. The police came and Bobby told them the three had refused to leave his home and they had jerked the phone from him and prevented him from using it the first time he tried and that he had attempted to leave out his front door and they grabbed his wheelchair and prevented him from leaving. The female claimed Bobby touched her vagina even though the two men were in the same room with her the entire time she was in Bobby’s home.

Bobby’s Lower Body Was Amputated 20 Years Ago

Bobby has no sex organs. His penis and other organs were removed due to a life threatening infection after his legs were removed.

No arrests were made at that time. None of the three were arrested for crimes they had committed. The crimes: Preventing Bobby from making an emergency phone call, assault and preventing Bobby from leaving his home by holding him hostage.

On September 22, 2008, Bobby was arrested and charged with Sexual assault of a child. Even though Bobby called 911 for help, the police report claimed it was the female who called for help and makes no mention of Bobby being assaulted. It does mention that the female was so high on drugs that her speech was slurred. In order to get an indictment, a mug shot was taken of Bobby making it appear as if he was not handicapped. His weight was omitted and the fact that he had no lower limbs was omitted.

Bobby received 4 different evictions from his handicapped accessible home due to his arrest. Manager Kimberly Reavis insisted that she wanted Bobby out. With the help of Lone Star Legal Aid, Bobby remained in his home. In February of 2009, Bobby was awakened by Kimberly Reavis, and informed of racist graffiti on his back porch. The graffiti was threatening “Move out nigger or die”, “KKK, “Whites Only” and etc. The police were notified but so far, no arrests were ever made.

Bobby’s only source of income is $674 which he receives from SSI. In March of 2009, he received a letter from Social Security Administration informing him his benefits were being cut off due to his having been arrested and the warrant that had been issued at that time. Medical assistance was also terminated. With the assistance of Lone Star Legal Aid, Bobby’s SSI and assistance was reinstated.

Kimberly Reavis then issued Bobby a 4th eviction notice. Bobby decided to move stating “I really don’t want to live where the manager wants me out so bad. I don’t feel safe”. Bobby said he was also afraid that if an eviction was successful, he would lose his housing assistance and would be homeless. Bobby moved from a clean, safe environment where he was able to care for himself, to a drug infested, unsafe environment that is not fully equipped to accommodate his handicap and he had to wheel himself a half block away to check his mail box. Bobby also has an upcoming trial to deal with. This is an outrageous case of injustice. Three people, high on drugs, came to Bobby’s home at an odd hour, assaulted him, held him hostage, tried to obstruct him from calling 911, tried to force him to give them money and one was found to have drugs yet none of the three were arrested. However, one of the males, Michael Freeman, has since been arrested in unrelated incidents with drug charges and vehicular burglary.

The Situation Worsens

Bobby’s situation got worse in March of 2010. He discovered black mold growing on the walls and windows at his home in the Paris Housing Authority. Bobby complained to the Director, Denny Head. Bobby also complained of being afraid because of all the drug activity and dealers standing in the street near his unit selling drugs. Head failed to do anything. Bobby sought the assistance of Lone Star Legal Aid. Lone Star stepped in but initially rather than address the problem, Head became angry and sent Lone Star letters accusing Bobby of causing the mold. Head retaliated by writing a letter claiming that Bobby had been seen at 7:15 pm 9 months earlier smoking a marijuana cigarette. He also told Bobby’s next door neighbor that Bobby had accused her of being a drug dealer. Head told Bobby to handle the problem himself by washing the mold away with bleach. An expert was hired by Lone Star who determined the mold was at dangerously high levels and couldn’t be gotten rid of by washing it with bleach. Head was forced to move Bobby to a different unit. Bobby currently resides in that unit.

Bobby is scheduled to stand trial with jury selection to begin March 23,, 2011. Bobby, verbally and through certified letters, requested repeatedly that his court appointed attorney, Dan Meehan, hire expert witnesses for his defense. He requested repeatedly that a Dr. or expert be hired to testify regarding his medical records and penectomy and the effect a penectomy has on sexual desires or a lack of. His attorney refused to hire or subpoena any witnesses. Although Bobby informed Meehan that he does not choose to testify, Meehan informed Bobby that he would have to if he wants his medical condition revealed to the jury because he wasn’t going to call any experts. Meehan vigorously encouraged Bobby to plead no contest and take two years deferred. Meehan became angry each time Bobby refused and on March 16, 2011, walked out of Bobby’s home telling him to let Brenda Cherry be his attorney because he was through. Although Bobby informed Meehan that he doesn’t want him as his attorney, Meehan remains. This is a tragedy. This is an extreme case of injustice. Bobby is seeking the help of anyone who may be willing to help. On March 18, 2011, Bobby’s attorney filed a motion to remove himself as attorney of record. This removal came about because Bobby would not accept a plea agreement; he also cited interference by Ms. Brenda Cherry who is Bobby’s advocate.

JACKSON, Miss. – A woman released from prison on condition that she donate a kidney to her sister said Friday she was upset when she heard Gov. Haley Barbour intends to deny their request for pardons.

"I got down on my knees and cried," Gladys Scott told about 350 people who rallied Friday outside the Mississippi Capitol to support pardons for her and her sister, Jamie Scott.

Republican Barbour, a potential 2012 presidential candidate, released the sisters from prison in January on the condition that Gladys give a kidney to Jamie. Supporters had hoped Barbour's presidential ambitions might make him more inclined to grant the pardons to boost his image.

During the rally Friday, three men played African drums and protesters stood between rows of bright pink azaleas that line a Capitol sidewalk. Black college students leaned against a massive monument to Confederate women. In the mostly black crowd, a white man carried a poster with the slogan: "Barbour needs a soul transplant."

The Scott sisters served 16 years for armed robbery but say they're innocent. Barbour suspended their life sentences and released them.

Jamie Scott suffers from kidney failure, and Gladys Scott offered to donate the organ before Barbour made it a condition of their release. Surgery hasn't been scheduled because doctors have told them to lose weight.

Barbour told The Associated Press on Thursday that he doesn't plan to clear the sisters.

Jamie Scott said at the rally that she thanks Barbour for the release, but "Mississippi took 16 years and 32 days of my life."

She said that without pardons, she and her sister won't be free.

"Slavery is not dead in the South," Jamie Scott said. "Let me tell you what it's called. It's called the law."

The women's attorney, Chokwe Lumumba, vowed to make the pardon an issue if Barbour runs for higher office.

"Everywhere that Haley Barbour looks in this country, if he's looking for an independent or a moderate or whatever else they call those people that they're supposed to be getting the votes for, he's going to see us there waving the banner of the Scott sisters," Lumumba said Friday.

AP asked Barbour on Thursday if he plans to pardon the Scott sisters. He said: "Tell `em don't save any space in the newspaper for that to be announced."

Barbour has a second-floor office that overlooks the rally site, but he was not at the Capitol when protesters were there.

From The Honorable Sis. Cynthia McKinney: President Obama Gets His Groove Back By Attacking Africans

President Obama Gets His Groove Back By Attacking Africans

by Cynthia McKinney
Atlanta, Georgia
5 April 2011

President Obama promised "change" to the people who voted for him.  He told them to hope again and that change would come.  But President Obama's change is really more of the same.  Therefore, his elixir that was sold to the world was nothing more than snake oil.  The most damage, of course, is being done to those whose dreams were intricately woven into his words, not realizing that words are not policy.  In a most deadly treachery, those who believed in our President the most are the ones who are now suffering and dying the most.

Some people, to this day, remain tricked by the salve of words for the wounds inflicted by our President.  Others have begun to sink into despair while some search for answers.  But our President is adept at giving us, in the words of the late, great Fred Hampton, Chicago's other son, "answers that don't answer, explanations that don't explain, and conclusions that don't conclude."  It is to those searching for answers that I refer to my previous writings compiled on the websites below and to the writings of Bruce Dixon and Glen Ford and the entire BlackAgendaReport.com team and of Wayne Madsen whose writings can be found at WayneMadsenReport.com.

In Rosa Clemente's and my 2008 Green Party "Power to the People" Presidential campaign, I tried to warn the attentive public of what was to come under an Obama Administration:  even I could not imagine that it would get this bad.

I knew that dissent would be intolerable under an Obama Administration, enforced both from the Black political consensus and from the Democratic Party wingnuts--quashing dissent even with all of the attendant special interest burdens that come with any aspect of the Democratic Party.

I knew that the Muslim world was going to be in for a shockingly rude awakening, but even I could not conceive of the carnage this President could bring to that part of the world--either by a policy that encourages Muslims to kill other Muslims, or by the dropping of bombs and the use of depleted uranium on Muslim communities.  But not only that, we are seeing the murder of whole countries and the communities and cultures that gave rise to them.  The President's policies are dismantling and dismembering Pakistan and Afghanistan as we watch.  The U.S. Embassy in Iraq announced plans to employ a total of 16,000 people, doubling its staff, within the next two years.  The only antidote to these policies is unity and I hope that the residents of these countries are able to unite and resist in a much more effective way than have "antiwar"  "liberal" communities inside the United States.  Of course, some individuals stand out and are leading the resistance now and I can only hope that their voices are heard and multiplied among the masses, both here and around the world.

I do believe that Henry Kissinger was onto something when he marveled at the tremendous good will that this President has around the world and I do believe that Henry Kissinger, among others, sought to use that good will for their own purposes.  After all, when you buy a President, like a slave, he becomes yours.  It is clear now, that the people of the United States did not buy this President and so they do not own him.  There are clear winners from the policies currently being pursued, but they are not the people.

Speaking of Henry Kissinger, let me just say this about him and his minions:  When I was in the Congress, I received a phone call from Alassane Ouattara from aboard Henry Kissinger's yacht.  I had received many such calls from people wanting to benefit from my good reputation within the human rights and peace community in the United States and they wanted me to sell their particular potion of iniquity to people inside the United States and to the world.  Usually, these people were the kind of people accustomed to buying the consciences of public persons, so my "no" resounded rather sharply to them, and I earned yet another set of crosshairs on my forehead, I guess.

Alassane Ouattara and his Zionist wife, Dominique, were seeking my assistance--or maybe my silence--in his effort to become President of Ivory Coast.  I applaud Laurent Gbagbo in his efforts to stave off imperialism in Ivory Coast, one of the few African countries that has not one iota of a relationship with the U.S. military.  However, Democracy Now, FOX, CNN, AP, Reuters, and all the rest didn't tell you that when they ran their many stories about Ivory Coast.  While the world will celebrate "democracy" arriving in Ivory Coast once Gbagbo is gone, the exact opposite will actually be the case.  Handing Ivory Coast over to Henry Kissinger and his ilk is the policy of the Obama Administration.  I guess, President Obama is proving his worth:  perhaps no one could have done it better.

But it doesn't stop there.  Look at what President Obama's policies are in Haiti!  When the devastating earthquake struck there, only the fifth in the entire history of that country, President Obama sent in the drones when the people needed food, shelter, and medical relief!  How is that any different from George W. Bush and Michael Chertoff who sent men with guns into New Orleans, military and mercenaries, after Hurricane Katrina when the people really needed food?  Now, because of President Obama's policies and his complete prostration before the Vicars of the Imperium--that is, the Clinton Family--who call the shots on the future of the Haitian people, Haiti can only see more struggle against domination in its future.  Hillary Clinton went to Haiti to snatch self-determination from the Haitian people in the victory of Jude Celestin and to instead select a musician buffoon who once mooned his audience in a concert for Haiti's Presidency, all with the smack of legitimacy granted when one can successfully threaten the Election Commission with revocation of visas to the U.S. and control the Organization of American States and the United Nations that has troops of occupation there.

Had George H.W. or W. Bush or John McCain or any Republican done any of this there would be enough hot air to float the Hindenburg!  The streets all across the United States would be aflitter!  There would be animation in the Congress enough to make John Boehner cry!  Instead, however, the very people who wield official power and who could stop this madness because they supposedly represent the interests of the people, silence themselves and let this happen.  Unity, again is the antidote--the sand that can be thrown by a few into the gears of the machine.

But, there is also pernicious collateral damage from our President's policies right here in the United States in the African-American community that brought itself up from slavery and U.S.-styled apartheid.  President Obama has hastened the collapse of Black wealth in this country even as he feeds the beast of the bankers.  And, although our President can be counted on to roundly condemn Black men on Father's Day, it seems that is the only treatment for which our President actively searches out Black people--for criticism and condemnation.  The so-called Black Farmer "settlement" provides money for everyone but the initial Black Farmers who stood up and filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture, but who now stand to lose 1.5 million acres under President Obama's watch.  Under this President, Black people can be condemned, but not repaired.

As a result, sadly, Blacks are slipping back more and more into economic and cultural servitude and political irrelevancy.  And Michelle Alexander's clarion call in her book entitled "The New Jim Crow," reveals the true state of Black America.  Just one tidbit from Ms. Alexander:  “More African American men are in prison or jail, on probation or parole than were enslaved in 1850, before the Civil War began.”  According to a recent Economic Policy Institute report, Black family wealth has fallen to just $2,000 while that of White families rests at $94,600.

But, I have spouted these statistics for the past 20 years as they got worse and worse.  I have done everything that I know to do to try and warn the next victims of what these policies all mean for them.  And at a time when Japan is spewing radioactive material across the planet, our President goes to India and Chile hawking more nuclear potions while limiting the companies' liability when there is a disaster!  The winners in all of our President's policies take their rewards to the bank.  Woe is unto the rest of us.

Finally, I have said too many times to recall the number, that politics is not a beauty contest, nor is it a popularity contest.  Politics is about power and policy.  And unless we cast our votes for the candidates who represent our best policy options, then we are practicing the politics of self-abnegation.  Nowhere is that more clear than in the case of the Black community where even thoughtful critique of our President is unwelcome.  I want so much to change the world, but feel like Harriet Tubman must have felt when she approached slaves who did not want to be free because they didn't even know that they were enslaved!

Well, I would never think of myself as either a "mongrel" or a "mutt;" and will not accept being subjugated and my country completely decimated by one who does.  After all, if that's the way he describes himself, how can our President  think highly of other similarly situated people?  2011, the International Year of People of African Descent, President Obama is perfectly situated to carry out these noxious policies.  I am so angry for a moment I was tempted to start cursing.  I am writing this piece instead, listening to Carlos Santana Samba Pa Ti (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACdwCIld3kE), and just like his "Black Magic Woman" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sl-qWXosazg&feature=related) divining a bolder way to resist.
