The Jena 6: One Year Later...
The Only True Jena 6 Anniversary Show Going...Please Join Us In A Conversation With Some Of The Original Players As Well As An Update That Will Truly Disturb And Perhaps Even Disappoint...

Sept. 20, 2008, will mark the one year anniversary of the historic March On Jena, La....It will mark the time when folks regardless of color, race, gender, socio-economic background or creed united to supposedly confront the last stronghold of Jim Crow Rule in the Dear Ole Southland...However, we all must ask ourselves, how much has really changed since that event???

I am glad that Judge J.P. Mauffray, Jr., was removed from the remaining Jena 6 cases...However, I feel that it was a failure for him to still be a part of this so long after the 'successful' Sept. 20, 2007, rally... He won't be up for re-election, but D.A. Reed Walters is up for re-election and will likely still retain his job as "Lord High Executioner Of Jena" because he is running unopposed...The fact that Black folks still can't vote in Jena because of 'district issues' is also disturbing considering that we are 143 years removed from the American Civil War...

By the way, Bro. Mychal Bell, the member of Jena 6 who was the only one imprisoned during the March on Jena, is 'still in prison'...He is currently the property of the state and is in foster care until he finishes his last year of high school or at least that's what they're saying now...According to his lawyers, because he took the "the plea bargain", Mychal should have been @ home with his folks by Christmas of last year...By the way, Mychal Bell's 1st cousin, Baron Pikes, was tasered to death by a Louisiana policeman this past January...The other five of The Jena 6 have yet to have their day in court...

THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES...

Currently, Bro. Marcus Jones, the father of Bro. Mychal Bell, is also having his OWN issues with the law...He is currently awaiting his day in court for allegedly 'assaulting' and 'spitting' on his son's attorney, Sis. Carol Powell Lexing...However, I would argue that the 'just us' system actually spitted on Bro. Marcus' son before he did any spitting of his own...It is truly sad to realized that although the lawyers failed at freeing Bro. Mychal , that one of them may have succeeded in giving their client's father some jail time...

By the way Louisiana has the highest incarceration rate per capita than anyplace in the world (not Russia or Red China)...The U.S. has 25% of the world's prison population(that's tops in the world as well)...

Before we judge Bro. Marcus consider this...He was fired from his job and has been unemployed for one year because of the activities he was and is still involved in in trying to free his son...Since that time, he has been constantly harassed by Louisiana State Troopers...They have given him all types of tickets that they know he cannot pay...He is not living it up as some blogs and news outlet may suggest...He is broke financially and can't even afford to pay his cell phone bill let alone 'the child support' or pending 'legal fees'...Bro. Marcus is broke financially, but he is not broken in spirit...

What can we do??? We must do whatever it takes by using our gifts and talents as well as sweat equity to make the changes needed..."Power concedes nothing without a demand" and "Without struggle there is no progress"...Right on Bro. Frederick Douglass!!! How do you start implementing change??? Start implementing change by changing your self...Meaning be the change you want to see and the change in the world eventually will be staring back at you!!!

This was our generation's Brown v. Board, Montgomery Bus Boycott & Voting Rights Act all in one and yet we missed out on another opportunity because of incompetence, arrogance and lack of unity...My people we must wake up...Ego doesn't mean a thing if you ain't got an audience to perform for or a venue to perform in...However, justice means true liberation...This isn't about Jena 6, Color of Change, Michael Baisden, Tony Brown, Al Sharpton, D.A. Reed Walters, Justin Barker, Judge J.P. Mauffray, Marcus Jones or anybody else BECAUSE THIS MESSAGE AND IDEA IS BIGGER THAN ANY ONE PERSON...This is about reconciliation, reparations and progress...This is about unified righteous struggle dismantling oppressive and repressive institutional racism and stagnation a.k.a. regime change...There isn't a price tag on justice, it's priceless...We can't expect to change the course of history by staying on the sidelines or by accepting mediocre play calling and play...Let's get in the game and be in it to win it...

"The Jena 6 Case Done??? Victory???"

(AP) Five members of the Jena Six pleaded no contest Friday to misdemeanor simple battery and won't serve jail time, ending a case that thrust a small Louisiana town into the national spotlight and sparked a massive civil rights demonstration.

The five, standing quietly surrounded by their lawyers, were sentenced to seven days unsupervised probation and fined $500. It was a far less severe end to their cases than seemed possible when the six students were initially charged with attempted murder in the 2006 attack on Justin Barker, a white classmate. They became known as the "Jena Six," after the central Louisiana town where the beating happened.

As part of the deal, one of the attorneys read a statement from the five defendants - all of whom are black - in which they said they knew of nothing Barker had done to provoke the attack.

"To be clear, not one of us heard Justin use any slur or say anything that justified Mychal Bell attacking Justin nor did any of us see Justin do anything that would cause Mychal to react," the statement said.

The statement also expressed sympathy for Barker and his family, and acknowledged the past 2½ years had "caused Justin and his parents tremendous pain and suffering, much of which has gone unrecognized."

None of the defendants spoke to reporters.

By pleading no contest, the five do not admit guilt but acknowledge prosecutors had enough evidence for a conviction.

Charges against Carwin Jones, Jesse Ray Beard, Robert Bailey Jr., Bryant Purvis and Theo Shaw had previously been reduced from attempted murder to aggravated second-degree battery. All but Shaw were assessed $500 in court costs. The judge did not tack that punishment on to Shaw's case because he stayed in jail for almost seven months, unable to raise bail, following his initial arrest.

Each paid the fine and court costs immediately. The payment of restitution to Barker was also part of the deal, but the amount was not released.

The only member of the group to serve jail time was Bell, who pleaded guilty in December 2007 to second-degree battery and was sentenced to 18 months in jail.

The severity of the original charges brought widespread criticism and eventually led more than 20,000 people to converge in September 2007 on the tiny central Louisiana town of Jena for a major civil rights march.

Racial tensions at Jena High School reportedly grew in the months before the attack. Several months before attack, nooses were hung in a tree on the campus, sparking outrage in the black community. Residents said there were fights, but nothing too serious until December 2006 when Barker was attacked.

Friday's criminal proceedings were followed by a brief civil hearing to settle the lawsuit by Barker against the group.

Friday, nearly two years after more than 320,000 of you stood up to protect them from Jim Crow justice, the Jena 6--Jesse Ray Beard, Carwin Jones, Robert Bailey, Theo Shaw, Bryant Purvis and Mychal Bell--are all now free to move ahead with their lives. We should all be proud.

The five remaining Jena 6 cases were brought to conclusion on Friday1 when Jesse Ray, Carwin, Robert, Theo, and Bryant pleaded "no contest" to misdemeanor simple battery charges.2 They will spend no time in jail, serve seven days of probation, and pay relatively minor fines and court fees.

It's an incredible outcome given that the young men were originally charged with attempted murder in small-town Louisiana and had neither the funds nor the connections to get high-quality representation or attention for their cases.

Luckily for the Jena 6, hundreds of thousands of you got involved, and the power of your participation changed the game. An amazing team of lawyers worked tirelessly to achieve Friday's outcome. Our staff helped recruit them, and your financial contributions--over $275,000--provided the bulk of the funds for their work. Jim Boren, the coordinating attorney, said this about ColorOfChange members' contribution: "None of this would have happened without you."

But it wasn't just lawyers and money. Over 300,000 of you wrote to Governor Blanco and District Attorney Reed Walters. On September 20th, 2007, more than 10,000 of you went to Jena. Members who couldn't make it to Jena held more than 150 rallies and vigils across the country, and made more than 6,000 phone calls to elected officials in Louisiana. And a few weeks later, ColorOfChange members sent almost 4,000 complaints demanding an inquiry into the DA's actions.

Your actions offline and online helped put Jena on the map and resulted in critical coverage in every mainstream news outlet. You started a movement that made it impossible for Louisiana officials to support the status quo.

Today we offer congratulations to these young men and their families, and we say thank you to the entire ColorOfChange.org community. We're also so thankful to the attorneys who took these cases but chose to stay out of the limelight. They and several others3 are the unsung heroes of this story.

While this is a great moment, it's important to remember that if it were not for the extreme nature of this case, most of us wouldn't have known about it or gotten involved. The reality is that there are countless Jena 6's: young people--often Black and male--who are overcharged or unduly criminalized, and whose plight is unknown to most of the outside world.

Even in the case of the Jena 6, we need to take stock of what did not happen. While Judge JP Mauffray was taken off the case due to the appearance of bias (a pivotal moment for the cases), District Attorney Reed Walters--the person largely responsible for the problems in the first place--still has his job.

It's the reason our work cannot just be about identifying and fighting for individuals railroaded by the system, but about creating systemic change in criminal justice in America. We are truly grateful to have the chance to do this work with you, and we're hoping for your continued engagement and support.

'Jena Six' Mother Accused Of Hitting Women With Shovel

The mother of the most well-known member of the "Jena Six" has been arrested and is facing two charges of aggravated second-degree battery, officials said Friday.

Melissa S. Bell, 38, of Jena -- the mother of Mychal Bell -- was arrested Oct. 11, said Darryl Husbands of the LaSalle Parish Sheriff's Office. She is being held in the LaSalle Parish Jail, with bond set at $100,000.

Melissa Bell was charged with the battery of two women who claim she hit them with a shovel, Sheriff Scott Franklin said.

The women told deputies that they dropped their children off at Bell's home but returned when they received a call from someone saying a drug sale had just occurred at Bell's home while their children were there, Franklin said. The women went to retrieve the children when the altercation occurred.

"Obviously, they were very upset," Franklin said.

Deputies were notified and went to the scene. The two women went to the Sheriff's Office that same day and filed affidavits against Melissa Bell, who surrendered without incident, Franklin said.

Also arrested Saturday in connection with the incident was Pamela S. Simmons, 31, of Jena, who was charged with simple criminal damage to property; Carlisha M. Bell, 17, of Jena, charged with battery; and Perry E. Bell, Jr., 36, of Jena, charged with simple battery domestic abuse, authorities reported.

Bond was set at $1,000 for Perry Bell, $750 for Carlisha Bell and $500 for Simmons, according to Sheriff's Office records.

Mychal Bell, who now attends Carroll High School in Monroe, is the only member of the Jena Six to face trial in connection with the Dec. 4, 2006, beating of fellow Jena High School student Justin Barker. Five others -- Robert Bailey Jr., Jesse Ray Beard, Carwin Jones, Bryant Purivs and Theo Shaw -- still are awaiting trial.

Mychal Bell pleaded guilty in December 2007 to juvenile charges of second-degree battery after his adult conviction of aggravated second-degree battery and conspiracy to commit that crime were thrown out by an appeals court that determined his case should have been handled in juvenile court.

Since that plea, the trial judge, J.P. Mauffray Jr. -- the only district judge in LaSalle Parish -- has been recused from the remaining Jena Six cases. That decision is awaiting an appeal from LaSalle Parish District Attorney Reed Walters.

Bell's father, Marcus Jones, was accused of assaulting and battering one of his son's attorneys in August after a hearing in Baton Rouge, according to Baton Rouge Police. He reportedly confronted Carol Powell-Lexing in an elevator right after she finished in her "official capacity on behalf of his son" at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association building in Baton Rouge. The association denied Bell athletic eligibility to play football during his fifth year of high school.

According to the police report filed by Lexing, a "very upset" Jones was blaming Lexing for the hearing's outcome and spat in her face after pointing his finger and yelling profanities at her. Jones then pushed Lexing down, police reported.

Jones told The Town Talk that he did blame Lexing and pointed at her during the argument, but he said he would never get into a physical fight with a woman and didn't touch her.

Judge Removed From Remaining Jena 6 Cases...

I actually got the heads up from Bro. Marcus Jones the father of Jena 6's Mychal Bell about this update several hours ago...I am glad that Judge J.P. Mauffray, Jr. was removed from the remaining Jena 6 cases...However, I feel that it was a failure for him to still be a part of this so long after the 'successful' Sept. 20, 2007 rally... He won't be up for re-election, but D.A. Reed Walters is up for re-election and will likely still retain his job as "Lord High Executioner Of Jena"...The fact that Black folks still can't vote in Jena is also disturbing considering that we are 143 years removed from the American Civil War...

With that said we need to realize that as in the cases of Sean Bell, Jena 6, Angola 3 and Baron Pikes that a systemic change in the judicial and educational systems nationwide is needed...We need to stop being reactionary and be revolutionary...We need grassroots organizing transforming into institutional control in our communities...We need direct action with direct results...

What can we do??? We must do whatever it takes by using our gifts and talents as well as sweat equity to make the changes needed, "power concedes nothing without a demand" and "without struggle there is no progress"...Right on Bro. Fred!!! How do you start implementing change??? Start implementing change by changing your self...Meaning be the change you want to see and the change in the world eventually will be staring back at you!!!

Judge Removed From Cases Against 'Jena Six' Teens

The judge overseeing the criminal cases for the remaining Jena Six defendants was removed against his will Friday for making questionable remarks about the teenagers.

Judge J.P. Mauffray Jr. had acknowledged calling the teens "trouble makers" and "a violent bunch" but insisted he could be impartial. Judge Thomas M. Yeager, who was asked by defense attorneys to review the case, found there was an appearance of impropriety and recused Mauffray.

"The right to a fair and impartial judge is of particular importance in the present cases," Yeager wrote.

Six black teens were arrested and initially charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with a December 4, 2006, attack on fellow Jena High School student Justin Barker, who is white. The charges were later reduced.

Jesse Ray Beard, Robert Bailey Jr., Carwin Jones, Bryant Purvis and Theo Shaw now face aggravated second-degree battery charges. Beard is charged as a juvenile.

Mychal Bell is the only member of the group that has been tried. He was originally charged as an adult with attempted murder. The charge was reduced before a jury convicted him last June of aggravated second-degree battery.

In September, an appeals court overturned the verdict and ordered Bell tried as a juvenile. He pleaded guilty to a juvenile charge of second-degree battery. He now lives in Monroe, La., with a foster family and is attending school.

The case aggravated racial tensions in the tiny, central Louisiana town, and led to a massive civil rights demonstration last September.

Mauffray was out of town, court officials said, and would not comment on the ruling.

District Attorney Reed Walters said he may appeal the decision.

"Whatever ultimately happens concerning the judge, this does not mean these cases go away," he said. "It will just take longer to get them to trial. However, I may seek to have the decision overturned."

An attorney for Beard said he hoped it the Louisiana Supreme Court would quickly appoint a new judge to hear the remaining cases.

"Everyone is entitled to a fair judge, not the judge they want," attorney David Utter said. "It mystifies me why the district attorney would fight this."

Tha Artivist’s voice mail stays full…Not because I am important, more so because I don’t always like to empty my voice mail…I am always fighting for space for me…My life is cluttered with social causes, random stuff, bills, obligations that I can’t refuse for some reason, and just a lot of stuff overall that sometimes I can lose myself and even it seems my mind in the shuffle…Every now and then like a courtesy flush I clean out my voice box for new arrivals and more space...

It is funny because I must have some eerie sense of prophetic timing…Bro. Marcus Jones (the father of The Jena 6’s Mychal Bell) had been on my mind for weeks…I meant to call him Thanksgiving Day, but got caught up in my battles for space that the day passed me by…However, I made it a point to call him early the following week…To hear his voice was great, but also there was of course frustration...Bro. Marcus has been unemployed for well over a year, he was dismissed or rather fired from his job because of his involvement in the Jena 6 case…I told him to continue to keep his head up and eyes on the prize, better days are around the corner...I then closed the conversation by saying that I will contact him later in the week...

And then it happened...

Last Thursday (Dec. 4, 2008) I was glad that I did ‘flush’ in time to receive some of the best news I have heard in days…Bro. Marcus Jones, a very good friend of Tha Artivist in particular and of W.E. A.L.L. B.E. News & Radio in general, left a voice message special delivery style informing me that his son Bro. Mychal Bell was unequivocally freed from the state that Thursday…True jubilation could be heard in Bro.Marcus’s voice…His son had been a prisoner of the state as well as of public opinion for three years…

Humbly speaking, W.E. A.L.L B.E. News & Radio had been one of the first U.S. media outlets to interview some of the key players in The Jena 6 Saga including Bro. Marcus Jones in late July 2007…Looking back on it, it is truly surprising how little was known of the case right before the historic march on Sept. 20, 2007…I also helped in bringing Bro. Marcus Jones to my college alma mater, Washington University, to speak about his son and the overall Jena 6 situation post-march/rally that October…Meeting and hanging out with him was a true revelation...I did not know what to expect, but I was pleased to had met him and make his acquaintance…He was truly a down to earth self described country boy who had a good sense of humor, was colorfully plain spoken and to the point who just wanted justice done for his son and the other boys known collectively as the Jena 6…

Some people accused Marcus Jones of being a braggart…I would probably say that his ‘cockiness’ comes from his confidence with a background in athletics...Marcus because of his personality is a very polarizing figure, you either love the guy or you hate him, there is no in between with how one feels with Bro. Marcus…In a way Bro. Marcus Jones is in exceptional company, most people from what I read in history who are endowed with a great sense of purpose or duty, even when they fail to realize it themselves, usually are gifted at making friends and enemies easily…As evidenced by recent legal troubles and his ability to elude them like a pro-bowl running back, Bro. Marcus has painfully learned the ins and outs and pros and cons of being an unofficial spokesperson for righteous struggle in our apartheid of a just us system… With that said Bro. Marcus has finally realized for better or worse who his real friends and supporters are…Many people have made promises that weren’t kept…And so here we all are…

In the age of the internet, character assassinations are more effective and easier to come by than physical ones…Bro. Marcus was the most outspoken and colorful of the parents, so it didn’t help matters that the corporate media was attracted to everything about this very charismatic and magnetic personality…That means that they reported on the good and bad as well as took things said and done by Bro. Marcus out of proper context… The corporate media in this country has a way of taking people’s eyes off the facts and information of a case and inundating the general public with useless ‘tabloidish junkformation’ that it sometimes leaves the mind in a comatose state and starving for critical thought and analysis…The reason for this is because the nature of the corporate media in this country is more interested in car wrecks and bailouts than car safety and fuel efficiency…With that said there was a lot of confusion and misinformation about the case that kinda of placed a stigma on the whole thing it…It went from being Eyes on The Prize to The Flavor of Love in a New York minute… Although corporate media outlets did their best to undermine the Jena 6 movement and one of its most engaging personalities in Bro. Marcus Jones it failed miserable…For this cause is bigger than one man or moment…This is about universal redemption, atonement and justice not about ad rates and t.v. ratings…

By the way his son was (and still is) a very promising football player who had dreams of playing for the legendary SEC powerhouse LSU…However, these past three years in the state’s possession may have seemed like 30 years to young Mychal…I am not sure if football is at the top of his priorities as is getting out of Jena with its neo-Jim Crow apartheid practices… Also it was good to know that Mychal will finally fulfill the year late promise of the ill-fated plea bargain deal that was created by the Keystone cops who went posing as Mychal Bell’s lawyers which was to spend Christmas with family and friends…By the way Mychal’s legal representatives were not present when their client was officially released from the state on Dec.4…

More good news, Mychal’s mom, Melissa Bell, who was in jail with some legal troubles of her own was freed on bail just days before her son and was able to celebrate her birthday with her beloved Mychal this past weekend…

And this is what I want us all to understand…Yes it was great that people showed up for a day to protest their outrage about the legal lynching of these young black men…However, historically speaking nothing was ever solved by a protest march, sit-in or emotionally moving speech alone…You must have follow through and resoluteness to get what you want especially if what you want be justice…Frederick Douglass said with good reason that power concedes nothing without a demand…Everything that is done in this dimension must be willed…For example, people must realize that we are now living in the age of citizen journalism which means that blogs and youtube may be more reliable than New York Times, Fox News, CNN or MSNBC…I don’t know it’s kinda hard for me to believe everything that MSNBC/NBC put out in their media outlets about our two wars when you are owned by a corporation that benefits immensely form wars (General Electric, why you do you think Joe Scarsborough and his first generation American sidekick Nikka lose their swagger and pundit courage when their massa Papa Jack ‘Old As Methuselah’ Welch comes on the air talking tough…Papa don’t take no mess, especially if the kids want paychecks)…

Anyway one must remember that it was community radio, the bloggers and foreign press who started the coverage on Jena 6…It was the BBC who produced a documentary about the travesty in May 2007...Not Anderson Cooper, Larry King, Tavis Smiley or Soledad O’Brien, but the foreign press in places like Italy were the ones alerting the world about what was going down in Jena Town…With that said it was the savvy and popular Louisiana community radio talk show host Bro. Tony Brown out of Alexandria who coined the phrase Jena 6…Bro. Tony Brown helped initially organize the families involved as well as help them contact Rev. Al Sharpton and his posse...And the rest as they say is history...Or is it???

What is ironic is the fact that people have really tried to pimp the Jena 6 bandwagon…I have surfed the nets with folks using as their byline “I was the first to report about the Jena 6”…That’s fine, that’s human nature, but here’s the thing don’t stop reporting about the Jena 6 until the case is done…We owe it to ourselves to always be about the business of keeping things checked and balanced…We must be vigilant and on the lookout everywhere...We have the tools and resources, we now must also have the will…Like MLK stated "an injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"…

With that said the other five boys known as the Jena 6 still have their day(s) in court awaiting them so this fiasco is far from over…Until The Jena 6 Are Free, Neither Are We!!!

So-called Jena 6 Scandal More A Matter Of Bad Communication Tha Artivist Reports...

Controversy has swirled around the $200,000-plus donations that Color of Change – a popular grassroots/‘netroots’ organization – has generated for the Jena 6 cause.

Well-known radio talk show host Michael Baisden has accused the organization of nearly 390,000 of not giving all monies raised through their efforts to the Jena 6 defense effort. He’s had the support of Marcus Jones, the father of Jena 6 defendant Mychal Bell.

Color of Change, co-founded by activists James Rucker and Van Jones, responded with a paper trail that included canceled checks. All documents were made available to the public on their Web site http://www.colorofchange.org/.

The two men at the center of this controversy, Marcus Jones and Rucker, give varying accounts of what “Jena 6 Gate” – as it has been called – is really about.

“With the money situation, you see everybody online that’s collecting money for the Jena 6 (that) we don’t know anything about,” said Jones.

The Color of Change, said Jones, was the only organization that came in contact with the Jena 6 families “about raising money for the kids. We didn’t give them the authority to do so.”

A portion of the money Color of Change raised did go to the families, he said, noting his concern that the group wanted to control the Jena 6 through their financial contributions.

Jones said he first met Rucker at his mother’s home on Sept. 4, 2007 when Rucker arrived at the house unannounced around 8 a.m. Jones’ mom opened the door and encountered Rucker who said that he wanted to see her son.

After learning that Jones was asleep, Rucker told Jones’s mom that he would be back. Later, Jones’s mother told him about the strange man. Jones said he looked across the street and saw a man parked in a car in front of the church. He called the police.

Officers arrived on the scene and told Jones that the man was James Rucker and that he wanted to see him. Jones spoke with Rucker at his home. He was miffed that Rucker hadn’t called first. And he wasn’t crazy about one of Rucker’s ideas – new “white” lawyers to replace the African American lawyers representing the families of the Jena 6.

Jones ordered Rucker to leave the premises.

Later that day, Rucker passed a note to Mychal Bell through another Jena 6 member at the courthouse. Mychal showed his father the note, which stated that Mychal should call Rucker.

Jones confronted Rucker outside the courthouse and told Rucker to stay away from his son. Soon thereafter, Jones went public through the Michael Baisden Show and other outlets, telling Color of Change to stop raising monies on behalf of the Jena 6.

Weary of opportunists trying to exploit and capitalize off of the Jena 6, Jones said that the best way to contribute and get the money directly to the Jena 6 Defense Committee would be to mail it to the following address: The Jena 6 Defense Committee, P.O. Box 2798, Jena, La 71342

“A lot of people are trying to capitalize off these kids,” said Jones, adding that his focus was to get his son out of jail.

People should get the permission of the Jena 6 Defense Committee before they initiate any organizational fundraising for the Jena 6 group and its families, he said.

It’s hard when people – especially people of color – start to question your integrity, said Rucker.

According to Rucker, the first time he met Marcus Jones was actually in July 2007 at a church with supporters in Jena, La. He does recall going unannounced to the home of Jones’ mother, a move for which he said he later apologized.

Rucker said he simply had concerns about the Jena 6 case and wanted to address them directly with Marcus Jones. Rucker said he told Jones that he was in touch with a lot of nationally prominent black lawyers and law professors who had a lot of concerns about the way the case was being handled in Jena, La. Two prominent African American attorneys in particular were interested helping Mychal Bell’s case, he said.

Rucker said he spoke highly of Mychal Bell’s attorney, Lewis Scott, whom he called a very good man. And while he knew the concerns he raised about the handling of the case might cause a backlash, Rucker said it was not his intent to “sow doubt about Lewis Scott.” He wanted to make sure that Mychal Bell had the best representation possible.

Marcus Jones is in an extremely difficult situation, said Rucker.

“(He) goes from a place where the black voice is totally ignored and all of a sudden he is bombarded by these media and celebrity types coming at him and Marcus doesn’t know who to trust,” said Rucker.

“At the same time you have a kid who is in very serious trouble, trouble you can’t single-handedly get him out of…So you need to find help.”

While it is true that a few African-American attorneys involved in the case were replaced with white lawyers, Rucker said it was not entirely correct to say that it was a racially motivated move. The lawyers – both black and white – involved in the case are dedicated to “liberty and justice for these kids,” he said.

Still, the nature of the case dictates that race will play a big part in the perception of it, he said.

Rucker said to make sure the Jena 6 families received the correct donation amount from his organization, Color of Change paid the processing fees for online donations on its own.

Lamenting the position that talk-show host Baisden has taken on Color of Change’s involvement, Rucker said, “There are moments where you have black folks coming together doing something positive and you end up having black folks, sometimes unknowingly, being the foot soldiers for the demise of that unity.”

Part of doing the work of Color of Change is insisting on accountability and transparency from those who serve the public, including those who do so through Color of Change, said Rucker.
