Inauguration Tickets Hot, But They Don't Exist Yet

Preparations have already begun in front of the White House for the Presidential Inauguration on January 20.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – It's only November, but the demand for a seat at the Presidential Inauguration is high, and people are scrambling to get their tickets.

But before you try, don't. Tickets don't even exist yet, but if you want to attend, you should start making plans now.

Pennsylvania Avenue will be packed with people on January 20, and so will the National Mall. Some who want to be there say they're willing to pay for seats and tickets to the ceremony, but they're free. Hotel rooms, which aren't free, are filling up fast.

Around D.C., souvenir shops are busy with people who want a piece of history—anything to remind them of President-elect Barack Obama.

Inauguration Day will be huge for the entire country, and millions of people are already trying to book hotel rooms and get as close to the Capitol as possible for the swearing-in ceremony. Rooms are filling up faster than in years past, but there are still some available.

"Hotels have package deals all over the place, literally from $50,000 for a hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton to $400 or $500, which are reasonable rates for a regular hotel here in the region," said William Hanbury of Destination D.C.

The historic Willard Intercontinental along the parade route started getting calls 10 minutes after the results came in on Election Night.

"We have a few left in our back pocket for some lucky people who are going to be on the presidential parade route," said Barbara Bahny David, a hotel representative.

If you want tickets for the swearing-in ceremony, officials say they are free, but you have to call your congressman or senator in order to get one, and the calls are already coming in.

The committee that plans the inaugural ceremonies says don't buy the tickets websites are trying to sell, because they don't even exist yet.

If you just want to stand along Pennsylvania Avenue on the day of the parade, spots are free between the White House and the Capitol—but you'll need to get there early to get a spot.

Some websites are trying to sell tickets for those spaces for hundreds of dollars, but inaugural officials say if you buy them you're just wasting your money.
