Tha Artivist & W.E. A.L.L. B.E. News Salutes Mo’Nique On Well Deserved Oscar Win…

Congrats To Sis. Mo’Nique on her well deserved Oscar win for her tour de force role in Precious…Tha Artivist had the honor of making the acquaintance of the Oscar winner back in April 2008 during the 40th Anniversary of the MLK Assassination in Memphis…I was a volunteer for Al Sharpton’s National Action Network Conference which coincided with the observance…As a token of appreciation Rev. Al Sharpton allowed the volunteers to attend the opening gala at the Peabody Hotel…They were giving out awards to honor people from all walks of life for a life dedicated to service and living up to the ideals and principles preached and acted upon by the late great Dr. Martin Luther King…

The distinguished honorees for the most part read like a list of living Black Pride, Achievement & History…Those honored were as diverse and accomplished as resilient civil rights legends Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker (one of MLK’s coveted and trusted lieutenants) & Sis. Myrlie Evers (accepting a legacy award on behalf of her late husband, the civil rights martyr known as Medgar Evers), ageless wonder and acting legend Sis. Cicely Tyson as well as publishing titan Bro. Earl Graves of Black Enterprise Magazine…True Black Star Power indeed!

Mo’Nique, now a true legend in her own night, emceed the star studded event…She came across as very humble, thoughtful as well as very knowledgeable about the combined history/heritage that these exceptional nominees represent…She wasn’t Hollywood at all and her down home persona was a winner with the audience…Although the event ran a little late…
Phenomenal Women:Tha Artivist's Mom & Mo'Nique

My mom and I enthusiastically waited to meet Mo’Nique…It was amazing the see the sister work the crowd…She was so patient with everybody as well as very accommodating…You can tell that she was the type of star that doesn’t take her fans for granted…She always talked about how she had to take risks in order to be successful…Her risks indeed were paying off, but I am willing to bet that she wasn’t aware that her risks would eventually lead to an Oscar nomination and a coveted and well deserved win …

"Lady & The Blues" By R2C2H2 Tha Artivist

When it was my turn to meet her, I didn’t feel she was a celebrity but a long lost friend/relative that I was reconnecting with…I gave her one of my art prints that I did of Billie Holliday entitled "Lady & The Blues"…I wanted to give her that print in particular because Billie Holliday had roots in the town where Mo’Nique grew up, Baltimore…As a matter of fact Baltimore is where Oprah, an important producer behind Precious a.k.a. Mo’Nique’s star vehicle, started her climb as a little known local news personality into the super media mogul that is revered worldwide if not universally so…

Mo’Nique seemed to be very impressed and appreciated the gift…Needless to say it made my night…I look forward to positively crossing paths again with this phenomenal sister in the near future…It was very inspiring to see her win and give the wonderful speech that she gave…The fact that she would mention the exalted ancestor Sis. Hattie McDaniel (the first Black to win an Oscar in 1940) in her emotional award acceptance speech let you know that the sister’s knowledge of self runs deep and that it was no laughing matter to be a part of that continuum of Black sisters and brothers who continue to excel and achieve against all odds! It was also good to see her with a strong brother who seems to know himself (secure with his woman being a true star and breadwinner without feeling emasculated) and knows how to motivate his woman to be the best she can be…Black Love Is Still Real
