Dr. T.R.M. Howard, MD Old Hwy 61 (161) Renaming Ceremony And Cash Prize Given In His Honor 

August 26, 2010, Mound Bayou, MS--After six decades, the state of Mississippi, Bolivar County and the city of Mound Bayou, MS will pay respect to T.R.M. Howard, MD, by renaming a portion of Old Highway 61, (HWY 161) in his honor. The dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Monday September 6, 2010, in downtown Mound Bayou. Citizens of the Delta and special guests will assemble at 11:45 a.m. for a parade down Old Hwy 61, (161). The ribbon cutting ceremony will begin at 1:00pm; and festivities will conclude with a luncheon, immediately following the ceremony in the Mound Bayou Facilities Building, located at 301 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Mound Bayou. 

A Mound Bayou resident will win one thousand dollars in cash ($1,000), during the ribbon cutting ceremony at 1:15 p.m. To be eligible to win the prize contestants must be at least 21years old, a resident within the 38762 zip code and complete an entry form. Entry forms and deposit boxes will be at Mound Bayou City Hall and other locations throughout the city. Prove of residency (driver’s license/state ID or a utility bill) shall be required to receive the prize. 

Confirmed guests and presenters during the luncheon, include: Ed Dwight, Monument developer; Charles Evers, former Field Secretary for the Mississippi State NAACP; Bill Luckett, Democratic candidate for Governor; and Dr. Leslie Pollard, V.P. Loma Linda University School of Medicine, TRM Howard’s alma mater; Kennedy Johnson, Mayor of Mound Bayou; and, Rev. Darryl Johnson, TRM Howard Event Coordinator. 

The purpose of the celebration and street naming is to celebrate Howard’s historic work, as a doctor and “maverick” in the fight for justice, civil rights and economic empowerment for economically disadvantaged people in the state of Mississippi and across the nation. According to Linda Royster Beito, co-author of Black Maverick: T.R.M. Howard's Fight for Civil Rights and Economic Power, “This event will not only honor a man of intelligence, determination and perseverance, but also the town of Mound Bayou and its tradition of self-help, health-care, entrepreneurship and civil rights.”
