"Searching For Black Caesar: The Rise & Disappearance of Frank Matthews"
Bro. Ron Chepesiuk Interview 6/9/2013

Crime Expert and Author Ron Chepesiuk Uncovers Criminal Legend Frank
Matthews in New Book

New York City - On July 2, 1973, Frank Matthews, history's first African American drug kingpin, jumped bail in New York City with $15 to $20 million - the equivalent of $80 million to $90 million in today's money. It is believed he took his beautiful mistress, Cheryl Brown with him. Though Matthews is undisputedly the longest missing fugitive in DEA history, another figure from the '70's, Assata Shakur, was just recently placed on the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorists list. A 66-year old Black woman, Shakur's reward is set for two million dollars. The reward for 69-year old Frank Matthews, the target of one of the largest manhunts in U.S. law enforcement history, is a mere $20,000. He remains at large and his disappearance is a complete mystery. He has never made any "Most
Wanted" list.

Many believe Shakur was erroneously convicted for the murder of a state trooper. But there is no mistaking the fact that the narcotics Matthews helped funnel into Black communities across America continues to leave a trail of devastation, betrayal, death and despair. In each case it has been
forty years. And so goes the continued urban legend of Frank Matthews, perhaps the most authentic American Gangster of them all.

Award-winning crime author Ron Chepesiuk goes into depth to investigate the unsolved disappearance of Matthews with his new book, "Black Caesar: The Rise and
Disappearance of Frank Matthews, Kingpin" from Strategic Media Books. With an undercover reporting style that leaves no stone unturned, Chepesiuk's determined crack at unraveling one of the crime world's biggest unsolved mysteries makes for a fascinating and intriguing read.

Matthews' literally dominated the heroin market in the '70's. A country boy from North Carolina, Matthew operated out of New York with a drug empire that spanned 21 states with overseas contacts for heroin and cocaine. A boss of bosses, the DEA ranks him as one of the Top Ten drug traffickers in United States history. A young man in his twenties at the time, Matthews was one of the first major independents who challenged the La Cosa Nostra for supremacy in the criminal underworld. The streets deemed him, "Black Caesar" as he was the first black man bold, astute and confident enough to control an interstate organization of its size, independent of the Mob that ruled all.

Chepesiuk follows the trail left cold, retracing Matthew's criminal path with the nose of a bloodhound. His interviews with DEA agents, Federal Marshals, aging ex-drug kingpins, friends, families and associates are perhaps the most in-depth gathering of details about this nefariously historic figure ever compiled. The book explores a host of nagging questions. How was Matthews able to operate for several years without being detected? What was his relationship with La Cosa Nostra? Why did the CIA get involved in the Matthews investigation? What happened to Cheryl Brown? Why has the mystery of his disappearance been so difficult to solve? And while the questions are explored and answered, "Black Caesar: The Rise and Disappearance of Frank Matthews, Kingpin" colorfully captures the vivid imagery, drama and intrigue of the era, entangling
the reader in a real life thriller.

"Ron Chepesiuk is to true crime books what Nas is to the hip-hop world," offers Seth Ferranti author of "Gorilla Convict: The Prison Writings of Seth Ferranti," who provides the gripping foreword for
the book. "He writes like a lyrical poet examining issues in popular culture in both a historical and scholastic context."

"The Real American Gangster: The Sgt. Smack Interview" 6/23/2010

Did Frank Lucas Steal Sergeant Smack's Incredible Life Story & Make It His Own? If So, Why?

Raleigh, North Carolina - In what might be considered a 'literary' showdown, award winning crime author Ron Chepesiuk uncovers one of the biggest hoaxes in the history of the international drug trade in his new release, "Sergeant Smack: The Legendary Lives and Times of Ike Atkinson, Kingpin, and his Band of Brothers." Slated to hit bookshelves on June 21, just days after "American Gangster" Frank Lucas' book is released, "Sergeant Smack" details the true legend of Ike Atkinson, one of the biggest Black drug traffickers in U.S. history.

Atkinson pioneered some of the most innovative methods used in international drug smuggling. They ranged from duffle and AWOL bags, to the U.S. Army Postal System to the use of unsuspecting crew chiefs who operated military aircraft to teakwood furniture.

But, contrary to popular belief, Atkinson's methods did not include the bogus cadaver-heroin smuggling connection conspiracy exploited by Frank Lucas in Hollywood's blockbuster film, "American Gangster." The film not only distorted Atkinson's historical role in the international drug trade, but falsely depicted Lucas as the pioneer of the Asian heroin connection. As the book, "Sergeant Smack" conclusively shows, the conspiracy is a hoax, as is Frank Lucas' claims to participation with Ike in the conspiracy.

1st Hour~My Uncle Al Capone Part 2
Guest 'Uncle Al Capone' Author Sis. Deirdre Capone
"A crook is a crook, and there's something healthy about his frankness in the matter. But any guy who pretends he is enforcing the law and steals on his authority is a swell snake. The worst type of these punks is the big politician. You can only get a little of his time because he spends so much time covering up that no one will know that he is a thief. A hard-working crook will-and can-get those birds by the dozen, but right down in his heart he won't depend on them-hates the sight of them."
~Al Capone

About The Author & The Book

Her grandfather was Ralph Capone, listed in 1930 as Public Enemy #3 by the Chicago Crime Commission. That makes her the grand niece of Public Enemy #1: Al Capone.

As a child, she didn't know he was a notorious gangster ... he was just her Uncle Al. She sat on his knee and traded "knock-knock" jokes with him. He taught her how to swim, ride a bike, and play the mandolin.

But after he died on her seventh birthday she began paying the price of being a Capone.

From age 7 to 13 her classmates were not allowed to play with her. Just before her 11th birthday her father committed suicide due to the burden of the Capone name. At age 18 she was fired from her first full-time job because of her name. These circumstances made Deirdre determined to find out more about her family history and to write this book.

Over the course of many years she had countless conversations with her grandfather Ralph, as well as Al's other brothers and only sister, Al's wife, and his only child, Sonny. Some were more open than others, and each made her promise to not publish anything until all of them were dead and buried. Deirdre is the last member of Al's family born with the name Capone. She is literally …the last of the Capones. Finally, after all these years she is able to share things about Al Capone and his family that none of his many biographers ever knew.

Most importantly, this is the only book written about Alphonse Capone by a person who actually knew him, touched him, heard him talk, and ate meals with him.

Tales From Uncle Frenchie (True Stories!!!)

The above photo is me with my Great Uncle James French, Sr., aka Uncle Frenchie...He is my paternal grandmother’s last surviving sibling (there were ten of them in all breaking down to 6 girls and 4 boys…My grandmother is the youngest and he is the oldest by 2 years but they are the last as well as the youngest siblings of the bunch…)

This was taken 10/7/2013 on his 87th Life Affirmation Day at his place of business, The Charleston Chronicle Newspaper Offices...This was my first time meeting him but it seemed like I knew him all my life...We share a lot of interesting things in common including a unique sense of humor, fondness for hats, our dislike for stupidity and white supremacy as well as a sincere love of food and women...He is after all a sailor...Lol...

Although he is 87 he has the energy/stamina and drive of a man half his age!!! He drives himself around in his van, set his own hours because he is the boss, and he is very active in the community, serving on the board of directors for the famous Jenkins Orphanage which produced some of the greatest jazz musicians of the 20th Century!!!

He is also a former Golden Gloves boxer and was awarded the Bronze Star during his stint in the Navy while surviving the Vietnam War as a navy journalist...My Uncle Frenchie was good childhood friends with jazz icon Charlie Parker, was trained in the art of photography by legendary photographer Ansel Adams, drank beers with Fidel Castro during the Cuban Revolution, once interviewed Ava Gardner as well as the Queen of Spain, accompanied U.S. VP Hubert Humphrey and Gen. Ben Westmoreland on a tour of Vietnam (he also gave them a scare when his camera light bulb pop causing everyone to duck because they thought they were being hit with enemy fire), was an invited guest to a spaghetti dinner with legendary gangster kingpin Charles ‘Lucky’ Luciano in Naples, Italy, partied in Rome, Italy, with legendary Black night club impresario Ada 'Bricktop' Smith, and was a guest of honor in the homes of Vietnamese enemy combatants during the Vietnam War while patrolling the infamous Mekong Delta among other adventures…

Safe to say that Uncle Frenchie did a lot of living in nearly a century of living to last several lifetimes!!!

My Uncle Frenchie Founded And Runs The Oldest Black Owned Newspaper In The State Of South Carolina: The Charleston Chronicle...Support It!!!

For posterity I was blessed to interview him about his life for several hours...Most times the facts and truth makes for a better story than fiction and hyperbole...In this segment I will share some of the incredible stories my Uncle Frenchie have so selflessly shared with me...What a humble man and what a well lived life...The Best Is Yet To Come!!!
