Why Pope Benedict Must Resign

Why Pope Benedict Must Resign
Editor’s Note: Before becoming Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was best known for resisting liberalization of Catholic Church orthodoxy. He was a staunch enemy of reforms that would have given women greater power within the Church, softened the hostility toward adult homosexuality, and abandoned the insistence on clerical celibacy.

Yet, while guarding the Vatican gates against forces of modernity, Cardinal Ratzinger also was covering up the global scandal of priests sexually abusing boys, a failure that – in the eyes of Marquette Professor of Moral Theology Daniel C. Maguire – now requires the pope to submit his resignation:

Why Is Benedict Right And Wright Wrong?

Trinity United Church of Christ/Religion News Service
In Chicago, Mr. Obama embraced Christianity under the tutelage of the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., known for sometimes inflammatory views.

Pope Benedict XVI

Two weeks ago, Pope Benedict XVI made a historic visit to the U.S.A….Many felt that this was a major turning point in public relations for a Pope who is noted as being a strict disciplinarian and was nicknamed "TheRottweiler " during his days as a cardinal in the Vatican…Now the Infallible One can seem to do no wrong and has proven to be just as media savvy if not universally as beloved as his predecessor Pope John Paul II…

And taken a cue from Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI has shown that he has a soft spot for those in pain and suffering because of the effects and imperfections of an all too human institution: The Catholic Church in particular and organized religion in general…Just as Pope John Paul II apologized for The Catholic Church’s involvement in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade & lack of intervention in the Jewish Holocaust, Pope Benedict XVI went out of his way to apologize and meet with several people who had suffered sexual abuse at the hands of Catholic priests…He also went to a synagogue in NYC which further symbolized The Church’s Solidarity with Judaism…That took courage and fortitude as well considering that the German Pope was a former Hitler Youth member while the Rabbi who welcomed the Pope to the synagogue was a Holocaust survivor…Regardless of his personal connection to this horrible chapter in human history, The Pope was still welcomed by NY’s large Jewish population with forgiving open arms…

All in all, in spite of the historic and recent problems of this most powerful of institutions, The Catholic Church proven that its brand is resilient and stronger than ever, a good sign in seemingly forever controversial and gloomy times…

The Verdict Is In: America Loves The Pope

It’s very sad indeed that America can embrace a Pope who is a moral leader and who represents an institution that tries to stand on the principle of moral clarity yet still finds itself muddled and mired in the flaws and contradictions of the human condition and all the while America can not make room in its emotionally obese heart for love and forgiveness for one of her own prophets, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright…Rev. Wright did nothing but tell like it is and called it like it was for nearly 40 years of ministry…Rev. Wright was an activist or change agent in the truest sense of the Prophetic Tradition…He justdidn ’t lead from the pulpit, but he mixed his rhetoric and spirituality with his actions to form a Molotov cocktail for social justice through his innovative if at times misunderstood Chicago-based ministry…

Rev. Wright had the audacity of hope to invest in a community that was ravaged and decimated by institutional racism, communal, spiritual and historical despair…His ministry represents the rose that grew from concrete, blossoming in a place that received the less sunshine and was the most malnourished….
His congregation even produced a Presidential candidate whose historic bid in a nation where the acknowledged original sin was the enslavement of African people seemed so impossible or like a fairy tale until of course recently…

And so to have all of these good and noted works diminished by 15-30 second sound bites taken out of context seems to show that America still has a problem in exploring all the complexities and shortcomings of her national character…Yet instead of analyzing the message, America has in the traditions of Empires/ Superpowers past and present tried to destroy the messenger whose only fault is that the messenger cannot refuse, reject and denounce The Truth…

Jeremiah Wright (second from right), in 1966, as a U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman. He is tending to President Lyndon Johnson, for which he was commended (see letter superimposed on photo).

It is truly ironic that a man who served as a proud U.S. Marine and then as a proud U.S. Navy man (actually volunteered and left college to do so unlike Dick "5 Deferments" Cheney and George W. "Missing In Action" Bush), who was a personal medical assistant to U.S. Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson (receiving three letters of commendation from the grateful Pres. Johnson) and who was called by then Pres. Bill Clinton to theWhitehouse in 1998 to provide spiritual counseling and comfort to the President during the Ken Starr Inquisition could ever be accused of being unpatriotic…

Jeremiah Wright (center left), in 1998, greeting President Bill Clinton during a prayer breakfast at the White House.

It is also confusing and sad that the Honorable Rev. Wright could be called a racist by many, but yet his ministry is part of a predominantly White denomination, The United Church of Christ, that cites Rev. Wright’s ministry as a shining light…As a matter of fact United Church of Christ considers Rev. Wright’s Trinity United Church to be a great gift to ‘wider church family’…

I also would suggest people to read the letter put out by Rev. Wright’s denomination in defense of Rev. Wright & Trinity United Church of Christ:
http://www.ucc.org/news/chicagos-trinity-ucc-is.html

I wish people would actually study the last 4 years of Dr. King’s life…The Black Church on a whole was not opened to King’s radical message of love and change…His famous Letter From A Birmingham Jail was addressed to Black clergy(the moral leaders of the Black community) in particular…During the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, Dr. King’s father was told by powerful members of the Black Baptist preachers fraternity to go to Montgomery and bring his rebel rouser son back to Atlanta to keep him quiet…In 1967, Dr. King was dis-invited from the Whitehouse for his outspokenness against the Vietnam War, he went from being the Nobel Peace Prize Winner and Time Man of the Year in 1964 to being labeled by the AP Gallop Polls as being one of the ten least liked Americans…There were pulpits in the Black Church that Dr. King wasn’t allowed to speak from…Rev. Wright has nothing on Dr. King when it came to the rhetoric condemning the antics, tactics and character of the good ole U.S. of A. which Dr. King called "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today" ...Dr. King, not one to chide away from controversy or the truth, also stated "America was founded on genocide, and a nation that is founded on genocide is destructive"…Dr. King also went on to state that "a nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death"...He also accused the majority of White America as being racist and was very wary of liberals, both Black & White , who advocated charity over justice, moderation over expediency, and waiting over perseverance…Dr. King also endorsed the redistribution of wealth and reparations for African Americans descended from enslaved Africans…

40 years later people forget or rather choose to not remember just how unpopular doing the right thing remains today…Jesus was killed for telling and living the truth and so was Dr. King…Today instead of killing the flesh they are trying to kill the character and spirit of Rev. Wright…However, if history is any indicator, Rev. Wright will be resurrected and vindicated with his message in tact…

Living in a world of no snitching and prosperity preaching, people have forgotten or choose not to remember what it feels like to really struggle for something that is righteous and just…Just like the days of old where Jesus would chase the money changers out of the temples and turn over the gaming tables…Unfortunately, today like it was in Jesus’ time, evil men prosper when good men do nothing still rings painfully true…Considering what’s going on in the world today we need silver tongued Prophets like Rev. Wright to keep many of us honest, cognizant and on the right path…

Malcolm once said that the media has the power to make your enemy your friend and your friend your enemy…Many of our most celebrated institutions were built out of sin…The United States, The Vatican and yes even The Black Church…

They say that the most segregated time in America is Sunday morning…The reason for that could be traced back to the fact that White Christians did not allow their Black congregants including Richard Allen and Absalom Jones to be seated in St. George’s Methodist Episcopal Church in the ‘City of Brotherly Love’ and Birthplace of the American Constitution and Declaration of Independence, Philadelphia…Philadelphia by the way is also the birth place of Rev. Jeremiah Wright...So the Black members led by Allen and Jones staged a walkout and form the influential A.M.E. (African Methodist Episcopal) Church…

It’s time for America to start embracing her better angels and to reject and denounce her demon spawns…
We have a choice to make…Like Dr. King said “WE CAN LIVE TOGETHER AS BROTHERS OR PERISH TOGETHER AS FOOLS”…If we choose the latter then like the literary prophet James Baldwin (a minister himself) wrote “the fire next time”…

The Hypocrisy Of The Media…Min. Farrakhan Was A Guest Of Honor For Key Pa. Hillary Supporter!!!

Mayor Ed Rendell Introducing Min. Farrakhan To Philadelphia

Tha Artivist Reports…Special To W.E. A.L.L. B.E. News & Radio

“I like to thank the Nation of Islam here in Philadelphia…Thank you for what you stand for and all the good it does for so many people in the city of Philadelphia…This is a faith which has as its principle the family…This is a faith that doesn’t just talk about family values, it lives family values…This is a faith where men respect their women and children…” ---Gov. Ed Rendell then mayor welcoming Min. Farrakhan to Philadelphia in 1997

Check Out YouTube Video Showing Gov. Ed Rendell, The Number One Hillary Supporter in Pennsylvania Introducing Min. Farrakhan:

Part One

Part Two

In light of the Sen. Obama-Rev. Wright-Min. Farrakhan Controversy Triangle, the corporate bought and bossed media has once again failed or succeeded in not enlightening our gullible fellow American citizens on the eye-opening light of the truth!!! As evidenced in the previous video, Gov. Ed Rendell back in 1997 welcomed Min. Farrakhan as a guest of honor to the city of Philadelphia when he was the City of Brotherly Love’s mayor…This is two years removed from the highly successful and controversial Million Man March which was spearheaded by Min. Farrakhan and even gained the support from none other than number one Hillary Clinton surrogate, Bill Clinton, who was U.S. President at the time…If our media was so good at finding the Rev. Wright ‘God Damn America’ comments why have they been so sloppy or non-committal in reporting this story???

Trinity United Church of Christ/Religion News Service
In Chicago, Mr. Obama embraced Christianity under the tutelage of the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., known for sometimes inflammatory views.

“When [Obama’s] enemies find out that in 1984 I went to Tripoli [to visit Muammar al-Gaddafi] with [Louis] Farrakhan, a lot of his Jewish support will dry up quicker than a snowball in hell."---Rev. Jeremiah Wright

White rage is such political b.s….Why didn’t Hillary reject and denounce Gov. Ed Rendell when this guy, who is also Jewish, was falling all over himself to give nothing but the highest of praises to Min. Farrakhan and his supposedly Anti-Semitic organization, The Nation of Islam??? The same Min. Farrakhan who supposedly called Judaism a gutter religion, Hitler a great man and who visited Muammar al-Gaddafi at Tripoli along with Rev. Wright back in 1984??? How can White America truly not be outraged at Gov. Ed Rendell???

Rev. John Hagee & Sen. John McCain

“Most readers will be shocked by the clear record of history linking Adolf Hitler and the Roman Catholic Church in a conspiracy to exterminate the Jews.”

"All hurricanes are acts of God because God controls the heavens. I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God and they were recipients of the judgment of God for that." ---Both Quotes By Rev. John Hagee

How can White America be mad at Rev. Wright for God Damn America when a major Sen. John McCain supporter and respected clergyman, Rev. John Hagee, said God already did so with Hurricane Katrina flushing out the sins of the 21st Century Sodom and Gomorrah known as the City of New Orleans…Rev. Hagee said the reason why it happened was because God was punishing the Crescent City for its high level of sin and organizing a Gay Pride Parade which was going to take place that Monday (Aug. 29, 2005) when the levees broke…He also stated in so many words that the Catholic Church is “a Great Whore”…Considering America’s recent love affair with Pope Benedict XVI and the Catholic Church, where’s that flaming self-righteous White Rage??? How has Sen. John McCain and Rev. John Hagee obtained teflon status from the fair and balanced=whack corporate media conglomerate while Sen. Obama, Rev. Wright & Min. Farrakhan are used as clay pigeons on the American Hypocrisy shooting range???

How has Rev. Wright and Min. Farrakhan earned the distinction of being racists when it is Rev. John Hagee who, through his own words and actions, practices religious intolerance, racism (Why are Black lives o.k. to sacrifice for sins in Hurricane Katrina vs. White lives lost in 9/11???), homophobia and xenophobia (remember Rev. Wright said ‘different not deficient’)…

Because the corporate media is not interested in truth, it is more interested in ad revenue and keeping the American people at each other throats over wedge issues, especially ones that do not carry much substance at that…Divide and conquer is the rule…But Pres. Lincoln said a house divided against itself can not stand…And this is why the American Corporate Media is afraid of the Presidency of one Barrack Hussein Obama…He comes from the land of Abraham, Abraham Lincoln that is…He is the messenger of the new politics of Lincoln refined for 21st Century consumption…He comes with a message of hope, reconciliation and progress…In order for that to occur many things which have been cloak and dagger for years will have to become transparent …That means many things such as the lies and deception which has been spoon fed to Americans for generations will become exposed and done away with…Those with things to hide and lose are in a panic state and will be scattering like roaches once the light comes their way…Many of us in this country don’t realize that Change Already Came…These are not the end times as we have been taught…This is only the beginning of something new…

Houses Of Hypocrisy By Philip A. Faruggio

Houses of Hypocrisy by Philip A. Faruggio

Now I know this column is going to upset many people. Well, I have upset many people before with my critiques and commentaries…. Why not now? I will focus on our Judea- Christian culture in my commentary today.

As a preface, I must address some other areas of worship where hypocrisy reigns as well. Let us not forget the great Hindu traditions echoed by Yogananda and Ghandi…. That are now prostituted by this current Indian government and its economic system. Ghandi fought against both the colonial British rule and the caste system. Sadly, India still maintains a caste system, now under the guise of Free Market Global Capitalism. The fine film Slum Dog Millionaire captured this better than any muckraking book could.

Next, we have the brutal Feudalism of many Middle Eastern Moslem nations. Sheiks, dangling mistresses and Western bankbooks, with fleets of limos and million dollar racehorses, jetting to and fro elite resorts….. While serfs garden their oasis. Or the jihadists who praise Allah while celebrating suicide bombings of civilians.

Getting back to America and Israel, how Jesus and Abraham must be grieved at what their current followers are all about. Inside those truly blessed temples, the altars remain silent as to the corruption, the greed, the devastation being done outside.

We have a Catholic Pope, who, as Cardinal and right hand man to John Paul II, covered up the sexual abuses perpetrated by a myriad of priests, spanning decades! This Cardinal ( now Pope Benedict ), also subverted the ‘ Liberation Theology ‘ principle that many Latin American bishops and priests subscribed to. This theology taught that the Church has a duty to lead the way for social and economic justice in the communities and countries it may be in. Instead, the Vatican, at that time ( and now ) would rather tolerate , thus condone, horrific dictatorships throughout Central and South America.

The so called ‘ division of church and state ‘ should never include any government or society outside the church that rejects the teachings inside. Would Jesus have remained silent after viewing the film clip ( actual US government footage ) of US helicopter crews , after authorization by superiors , massacring innocent and unarmed Iraqi civilians….. Whose only crime was walking through the streets of their neighborhood? Would he not condemn those who torture, or order torture, or attempt to justify it?

Would he not intercede when a priest asks his flock to ‘ pray for our brave troops ‘ , but never the civilians being killed by our troops, our stray bombs or IEDs? Would Jesus not question as to why our innocent soldiers were even sent to Iraq?

Would Jesus remain silent as super rich CEOs earn mega millions while others in his flock cannot afford their rent, or medicine, or perhaps three good meals a day? What would Jesus say to the top executives of private nursing homes, who earn mega dollars, about those $ 9.00 and $ 10.00 an hour aides who wipe the **** from the old person’s rear end, give them showers, change their soiled clothes? Would he not repeat his ‘Easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to get to heaven‘ warning?

Abraham, what about his feelings? Do you think he would remain silent, if he ran the Saturday temple service, about what Israel is doing? The children and grandchildren of those poor Jewish souls who were ghettoized, terrorized, starved, beaten, worked to death or gassed to heaven…… Are they now deaf and dumb? Would Abraham stand by on that altar of the holiest of holy temples, and allow his people to do what they are doing to the Palestinians in Gaza?

Do they not recall the ‘ Siege of Leningrad ‘ when millions were systematically starved to death by the Nazis? How many of those Israelis have relatives who were actually there in Leningrad? How many Israelis had relatives in Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Yugoslavia…. Throughout Europe, who had their valuables, homes, businesses, farms, livestock all taken from them to allow for Aryan settlers?

What then would Abraham say to Bibi Netenyahu when he insists on forcing Palestinians from their homes so as to expand Israeli settlements in Arab East Jerusalem? Would Abraham not demand, from the temple altar, that this nonsense stop!

To worship our Creator and give thanks for this life, is that it? Or is the whole purpose of this life to bring a little touch of heaven to earth? In heaven do they torture? In heaven is there greed and corruption? In heaven is it ‘ Every man for himself ‘ ?

The most important reason we are in these bodies, with minds and hearts etc. is to use our free will to make this a better place. To go to a house of worship and pray and sing is all well and good. Yet, if we just think that it is OK , in the eyes of God or the universe, to ignore injustice and suffering , so long as it is not affecting us…..

Well, then what in the heck was Jesus and Mohammed , Buddha and Lord Krishna , Abraham and all the other holy men here for? If only we could follow the most basic of sayings: ‘ As ye do unto the least of mine you do unto me.’

Thank Hitler For Israel...

Tha Artstorian Reports...Special W.E. A.L.L. B.E. News...

Was Hitler A De Facto Jewish Leader???

It was the disobedience and rebellion of the Jews, God's chosen people, to their covenantal responsibility to serve only the one true God, Jehovah, that gave rise to the opposition and persecution that they experienced beginning in Canaan and continuing to this very day... Their own rebellion had birthed the seed of antisemitism that would arise and bring destruction to them for centuries to come.... it rises from the judgment of God upon his rebellious chosen people.
---
Rev. John Hagee

Last Week Israel celebrated its 60th Anniversary...Last week U.S. Pres. George Bush traveled to Israel to speak at the Knesset and said some pretty divisive and inaccurate things about the U.S. Democratic Party’s involvement in the rise of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany...He said that the U.S. Democrats (actually he should have meant the isolationist U.S. Republican Senator William Edgar Borah from Idaho) and British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain were appeasers and apologists for Hitler...

It was also discovered this week that the good Rev. John Hagee said something controversial in a sermon 2 years ago…He said that Hitler was a hunter sent by God to kill Jews and to force the Jews to create or re-create some may say the country known to the world today as Israel…Needless to say this accusation did cause a little ripple in the corporate media lake and then went quietly away…However, not before U.S. Republican Presidential Hopeful John McCain rejected and denounced the good Rev. Hagee (who ironically is a very good friend of the Israeli Nation) for his so-called inappropriate remarks…

The question these points might raise is this: “Was Hitler A Jewish Leader???”

Many of us, especially our brothers and sisters in the Jewish community, would emphatically say Hell No!!!

I say this...Thank Hitler For The Rise Of Israel...

It only took Hitler 6 years to do whereas many others have tried and failed for years and centuries to do…

It can be rationally argued that Hitler did more to change the modern world, for better and for worse, than anyone in 20th Century History...

Hitler’s failed invasion of Russia helped to successfully modernize the Soviet Union military and get it ready post-WW2 for a five decade Cold War showdown with the U.S.A….

Hitler's War also helped to create two horribly ineffective institutions known as the United Nations and
the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency a.k.a. CIA…

Even two Popes were made out of HITLER’S WAR ON THE JEWS: Pope John Paul II was helping Jews escape and hide in war torn Poland while current Pope Benedict XVI joined the Hitler Youth or Nazi Boy Scouts…

Need I write more???

In alot of ways his monumental achievements as well as his monumental failures, albeit considered very infamous in many circles, are extraordinary considering the short amount of time he was in power (1933-1945)... Hitler, who was a failed visual artist (failed twice to get into the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna ), became a master artist when he used the world as a canvas to create his masterwork: World War 2... Picasso's Guernica ain't got shznt on Hitler’s masterpiece a.k.a. WW2... I know some of you will label me a "Farra-Kon" for writing these things, but read the following and then tell me what you think:

It can be rationally argued that if Hitler did not initiate the worldwide catastrophe known as WW 2 THEN THERE WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ENOUGH WORLD INTEREST IN CREATING A HOMELAND SPECIFICALLY FOR JEWS…As a matter of fact it has been proven that the great White Western Civilization Leaders such as FDR and Winston Churchill knew well before 1941 the atrocities that Hitler was committing upon the Jews and yet they did not bulge a digit in trying to even stop Hitler let alone appease him… It wasn’t until Hitler laid waste to the crown jewel of the British Empire known as London and the Nazi Allies, the Japanese, blitzkreiged Pearl Harbor, that the previously mentioned “men of honor and distinction” decided to act with all deliberate speed…

Many countries would not accept Jewish refugees fleeing the wrath of the Fuhrer…Some Jews were even force to relocate to the Middle East in what is now known as Israel…As a matter of fact the rise of Hitler helped to rapidly fulfill Great Britain's The White Paper Of 1939 mandate to establish a homeland in the Middle East for Israel within five years…

The world powers, after seeing the horrors of Hitler’s War graphically manifest itself in the written testimonies, the photos and films of concentration camps (hell on earth places for Jews in Europe), were guilt tripped into creating the Jewish Promised Land for failure to act in defense of the Jewish people…

Hitler’s aggression led to Israel’s resurrection

Hitler the De Facto Savior of Israel???

Catholic Church Accused Of Denying Justice To Blacks Abused By Priests

Catholic Church Accused Of Denying Justice To Blacks Abused By Priests
Black Victims Of Sex Abuse Charge Inaction, Cover-Up By The Catholic Church

By Ashahed M. Muhammad -Asst. Editor-
Updated Dec 26, 2009
The Final Call

Originally posted, Dec. 8 2009

CHICAGO (FinalCall.com) - Attorney Phillip Aaron said after hearing the emotional stories of victims of sexual abuse by religious authorities within the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church in Chicago, he felt obligated to help.

   Part I of a series

Mr. Aaron, a legal representative for dozens of Black men who allegedly were sexually abused by Catholic priests while in their teens, is leading the charge on behalf of his clients, who claim the religious hierarchy was slow to respond to their complaints, and once responding, were uneven in their dispensation of financial compensation and subsequent counseling services that were made available to White victims.

“Somebody had to help these guys,” Atty. Aaron told The Final Call “I think that I would die if I didn't.”

For the last nine years, Atty. Aaron has worked on behalf of at least 50 Black victims of pedophiles. Some say the abuse began when they were as young as age nine.

David Nolan, now 42, said his sordid tale of sexual abuse by a Catholic priest began when he was 13 years old. He said the priest used his position of authority and power to have sex with dozens of young boys at will, and seemingly without fear of punishment.

“We put them (priests) on pedestals almost to the point where I thought they were more than superhuman in a sense,” said Mr. Nolan. At one time, Mr. Nolan tried to tell, however, when he went to the Chicago Police, they called him a liar and laughed at him. Scared with no resources and no protection, Mr. Nolan's victimizer forced him to recant. Even after many complaints by members of the congregation, his victimizer was transferred to a bigger church on Chicago's Southside.

“No one cares about young Black boys being molested, but I'm reading in the news everyday how holy hell is being raised by White victims being sexually abused,” said Mr. Nolan, who said a young male relative was also sexually abused by the same priest.

Reginald Montgomery's nightmare of abuse also began at age 13, when he was homeless after being kicked out of the house.

He looked up to his priest as a father figure, until one evening the priest told him he could sleep upstairs in the rectory. The seemingly benevolent priest came and woke him up.

“I felt somebody rubbing on me.” Mr. Montgomery said when he opened his eyes, “He was standing there in his underwear.”

“He just did what he wanted. I tried to get him off me, but he was stronger then me. He actually raped me,” said Mr. Mongtomery.

David Clohessy, national director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), said the guarded and mysterious nature of the inner-workings of the Catholic Church throughout history were key factors creating an atmosphere where priests could engage in this type of sexual abuse, almost at will.

“For centuries the (Catholic) Church hierarchy has been a rigid, secretive, all male monarchy and remains so today; that is the crux of the crisis right there,” said Mr. Clohessy. “With virtually no checks and balances, you have almost limitless power in the hands of a few secretive men. That alone is a recipe for disaster,” he added.

According to their website, SNAP “is the nation's oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims.”

For its part, the Roman Catholic Church has acknowledged this problem, with an intensified effort and focus over the last two decades in which a number of institutional controls have been put in place.

According to officials from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, every effort is being made to resolve cases of sexual abuse involving priests in order to right the wrongs of the past, no matter how long ago the abuse occurred.

In an exclusive interview with The Final Call at the administrative offices of the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago on Nov. 13, John O'Malley, director of the Legal Services Department, while acknowledging that institutional racism and bias exists, categorically denied there was inequity in the treatment of Black and White victims of abuse by Catholic priests that were a part of the Chicago Archdiocese.

“It's not true,” said Mr. O'Malley, adding that he had spoken several times with Atty. Aaron regarding allegations of racial disparity.

“The first was that Blacks receive less in settlements than Whites; that's not true. The second is Blacks are demeaned in the process; that's not true. And the third is (Black) people are offered less in counseling services than White people; that's not true. None of those three allegations are true,” said Mr. O'Malley.

“Cases are unique, they are individual and they are based on a lot of circumstances,” Mr. O'Malley added.

At the time of The Final Call interview, no official numbers were available, Mr. O'Malley said he looked into the charges made by Atty. Aaron's clients and said he was “disappointed” that the race issue has continuously been raised. He challenged Atty. Aaron to identify the financial disparity in the records of those clients who have received financial settlements.

However, on November 20, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago delivered a report to The Final Call complied by the law firm Pugh, Jones, Johnson and Quant. According to the report, there was no evidence of racial discrimination during the review or settlement process.
“It has never been an Archdiocesan practice to compile statistics about abuse claims based on race or ethnicity. However, it felt compelled to do so when these allegations were made,” read the statement from the Chicago Archdiocese.

“The outside investigators found no evidence in determining monetary settlements. They also found no evidence to suggest that the review and settlement process differed based on race.”
In the 27-page report, the law firm did indicate that the “perception of having been demeaned is disproportionately felt by African-American claimants.” This was attributed to the fact that a quarter of the claims brought by Blacks were against a cleric who is a member of the Benedictine Order of St. Procopius Abbey. According to the law firm, it employed a “deposition-style statement” in its evaluation and settlement process that differs from the process used by the Chicago Archdiocese. Any other differences in settlement amounts were attributed to “race neutral factors.”

A Crisis In The Catholic Church

In 2002 the powerful United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), the governing leadership body comprised of the Catholic hierarchy nationwide, established a “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People” to address allegations of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic clergy. According to the organization, the charter also contains guidelines for accountability, reconciliation, healing, and the prevention of future abuse.

The late Pope John Paul II, in an April 23, 2002 address to the Cardinals of the U.S. and officers of the USCCB, said the sexual abuse of young people is “by every standard wrong and rightly considered a crime by society; it is also an appalling sin in the eyes of God.”

In his message at Washington Nationals Stadium on April 17, 2008 to the Catholic faithful, Pope Benedict XVI addressed challenges facing the Catholic Church regarding pedophilia within Catholic clergy.

“No words of mine could describe the pain and harm inflicted by such abuse,” said the pope. “It is important that those who have suffered be given loving pastoral attention. Nor can I adequately describe the damage that has occurred within the community of the Church,” he added.

In a 2004 letter written by Francis Cardinal George to all of the parishes within the Chicago Archdiocese, he wrote, “The Church is called to be holy; for our sanctification, Christ died. The Church has saints, but each saint is a reformed sinner. The sins of each harm us all. Each day I pray for those who have been sexually abused by priests of the Archdiocese. No matter when or how that abuse occurred, terrible harm, spiritual and psychological and sometimes physical, was inflicted. I pray also for the priests who have to face the Lord and his people as well as themselves.”

In 1990, Francis Cardinal George was appointed a Bishop by then Pope John Paul II and served on the West Coast. In 1997, he was named Archbishop of Chicago. Francis Cardinal George, also serves as president of the USCCB, a position he has held since 2007.

In Mr. Clohessy's view, the words as well as the collective actions of the Roman Catholic hierarchy are “largely public relations,” however, representatives from the Church say that transparency, and a continuous outreach effort is being made to right the wrongs of the past.

Large Financial Settlements

Media reports of financial settlements awarded to victims of sexual abuse by Catholic priests are heard daily with dollar figures climbing into the millions.

As a case in point, the Archdiocese of Chicago has paid out millions in financial settlements to victims of sexual misconduct and abuse involving priests over the years.

According to their 2008 annual report, the Archdiocese of Chicago paid out $11 million in fiscal year 2008, $8.6 million in fiscal year 2007 and $17.7 million in fiscal year 2006. For the period covering fiscal years 2001 through 2007, the Archdiocese of Chicago paid a total of $64.7 million “for settlements of sexual misconduct, related legal expenses and other costs related to direct victim assistance,” according to financial reports.

On August 12, 2008, the Archdiocese of Chicago announced a $12.675 million financial settlement to be paid to 16 victims of sexual abuse by eleven Catholic priests and as recently as July 21, 2009, announced another $3.9 million financial settlement to be paid to six victims of sexual abuse involving four former Catholic priests between 1970 and 1986.

Mr. Clohessy says despite the large financial settlements, the Roman Catholic Church is not being financially crippled and the filings by various U.S. Catholic dioceses seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in advance of civil trials are simply used as part of the cover-up strategy.

Seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection halts action in civil lawsuits and bars the filing of new suits while the church reorganizes its finances. Wilmington, Delaware, Davenport, Iowa, Spokane, Washington, San Diego, California and Tucson, Arizona are just some of the dioceses that used Chapter 11 bankruptcy to allegedly shield themselves from claims by victims.

“The common denominator is they all filed for bankruptcy on the eve of a trial at which the bishop was going to have to take the witness stand and put his hand on that Bible, and face tough questions in open court about what he did,” said Mr. Clohessy. “The bottom line is what the bishops fear is their own complicity (being) scrutinized and they will do anything to prevent that, even if it means seeking bankruptcy protection,” he added.

Black Catholics In The U.S.

It would not be unusual if an image of a Black person did not immediately come to mind when thinking of adherents to Catholicism. The vast majority of Catholics in Chicago are White and Latino, and the same is true nationwide.

The Chicago Archdiocese serves a little over 2.3 million Catholics, of those, approximately 90,000 or 4 percent are Black.

According to the Department of Communications for the USCCB, there are a little over 68 million Catholics in the U.S., and of those, 3 million are Black. Of the 195 archdioceses and dioceses in the U.S., only six are led by Black Bishops. There are 41,489 diocesan and religious order priests in the U.S., with only 250 being Black. Of 16 Cardinals in the U.S., none are Black.

Similar to findings that rogue police officers with numerous complaints are often stationed in neighborhoods largely populated by Blacks and Latinos who lack economic and political power, and despite denials from the Catholic Church, a similar dynamic appears to be at work with offending Catholic priests finding themselves quietly transferred to parishes in Black and Latino neighborhoods.

“The sad fact is they are less inclined to tell if abuse occurred, less inclined to be believed if they do report it, distrustful of law enforcement and more trusting of religious authorities,” said Mr. Clohessy.

“People coming forward to talk about being abused by priests is a difficult thing,” said Mr. O'Malley. “Priests are trust figures in their lives like a parent or a family member and talking about that is hard, so I would not speak harshly of anyone who said it was a difficult process,” he added.

“This is true racism in America,” said Mr. Nolan. “We found out that the Catholic Church doesn't have love for young Black Catholics.

“We were young devout Black Catholics who cared about God, who were good kids, not in gangs, not in trouble, but this man took our innocence and they helped cover it up.”

In Silent Solidarity: Tha Artivist Takes Part In The 50th Anniversary Of The Silent March

W.E. A.L.L. B.E. TV: In Silent Solidarity: Remembering 'The Silent March' 50 Years Later...A Conversation With Rev. C.T. Vivian

In Silent Solidarity: Tha Artivist Takes Part In The 50th Anniversary Of The Silent March

April 19: A Special Day In History

April 19 has proven to be a very monumental day in the annals of human history and events…Both in terms of tragedy and triumph:

• 1775 American Revolutionary War: The Battle of Lexington and Concord which began the American Revolutionary War.

• 1943 World War II: In Poland, German troops enter the Warsaw ghetto to round up the remaining Jews, beginning the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

• 1971 Vietnam War: Vietnam Veterans Against the War begin a five-day demonstration in Washington, DC.

• 1987 The Simpsons make their television debut in the short "Good Night" a segment for The Tracey Ullman Show.

• 1993 The 51-day siege of the Branch Davidian building outside Waco, Texas, USA, ends when a fire breaks out. Eighty-one people die.

• 1995 Oklahoma City bombing: The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA, is bombed, killing 168. That same day convicted murderer Richard Wayne Snell, who had ties to bombing suspect Timothy McVeigh, was executed in Arkansas.

• 2005 Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger elected Pope Benedict XVI on the second day of the Papal conclave.

April 19, 2010 also marked a day of reclamation of true people’s history and a recommitment to the ideals and agenda of the American Civil Rights Movement. 50 years ago to the day young people armed only with love, idealism, and a sense of shared purpose (destiny) stared down the oppressive glare of Jim Crow and valiantly reached into the belly of that wretched and twisted beast and within themselves to find the moral fortitude, mental audacity, and human dignity to break the back of the American apartheid system…They were both students of academia and clergy well versed in the non-violent-direct action philosophy which would be become the weapon of choice for many in the movement…The names of the participants in this seminal event now reads like an iconic Who’s Who of Civil Rights Headliners & Legends (Diane Nash, U.S. Rep. John Lewis, Rev. James Bevel, Rev. C.T. Vivian, Rev. James Lawson, Dr. Bernard Lafayette, Jr., and Dr. Colia Clark just to name a few)…

According To The Urban Epicenter (2008):
In the early morning of April 19, 1960, the home of Attorney and Mrs. Z. Alexander Looby was bombed. The Movement quickly organized the Silent March which began at 11:00 am. It was the first major march of the Southern Nonviolent Freedom Movement. There were no signs or even talk. IT WAS A SILENT MARCH. It surprised the very wide spread opposition to economic and social and racial justice in Nashville and across the country. The superb dignity and discipline of that nonviolent technique impacted Middle Tennessee and the nation.

Me being a history buff and artivist knew that I wanted to be a part of this important commemoration as soon as I read about it in e-mail…Bro. Fred Douglass once said that “there is no progress without struggle”…And furthermore Bro. Nietzsche wrote “he who has a why can endure anyhow.”…Needless to say that those were some of the truest words every spoken and written…”Wanting” & “doing” of course are two different things and I knew I had to have the right mindset and discipline to see the task through…
On Colored People’s Time In Order To Seize The Time

Well being in Memphis with the event happening 3 hours away in Nashville, I knew I would have to start day very early and be very brisk, methodically and strategic in my preparation…Unfortunately my body had other plans…After a night of hanging out late with friends and barely getting 3 hours of shuteye due to chronic insomnia, I found myself suddenly awakened from my minute slumber to see that it was 6:41am central time and that I was 2 hours behind my scheduled departure time! However, I did not panic…I have been using as my zen mantra since the beginning of the new year the phrase, “if you pray don’t worry, but if you worry don’t pray”…It calmed me and so I reasoned that if I could not make the actual march then at least will be able to take pictures and get interviews with some of the participants post-march…And the networking opportunities also made the $50 plus investment in roundtrip gas fare worth it...I also reasoned that it is not how you start a race, but how you finish that counts.

I did not leave the house until almost 8am central and was speeding to upwards of 95 miles per hour on 240 East towards Nashville…I saw state troopers several times during my sojourn and I was miraculously not pulled over due to me either breaking and slowing down at the right moments or the fact that GOD wanted and needed me to be at that historic event…It had to be a mixture of both…

I reasoned I could get there by 11am and could catch the marchers marching on Jefferson St. towards City Hall or either make my way towards City Hall to capture some of the remarks by dignitaries and other participants…

When I made it to Nashville by 11am I was surprised to see a throng of several hundred people still lined up @ the Tennessee State Campus being prepared, prompted and readied to commence onto City Hall…I made it in time with moments to spare! However I wanted to get extra batteries for my digital camera and badly needed to urinate so I parked my car and walked to the nearest Family Dollar which was several blocks away…Although I was successful in obtaining batteries I wasn’t allowed to use the restroom (they said they didn’t have a public restroom)…Somewhat disappointed I was resolved that I would use the restroom at the church where the marchers congregated…

However, I was caught off guard as soon as I stepped outside…I saw marchers of all races, genders and persuasions walking in twos on the sidewalk in silent harmony and solidarity, a true rainbow coalition…I also saw the warm smiles and faces of my good friends and fellow freedom fighters John and Judy Gibson form Arkansas…My need for relieving myself quickly vanished from my immediate thoughts and I began to enthusiastically take pictures of the marchers…As I got to the end of the procession I was instantly motivated to join this march by the march marshals…How could I resist documenting as well as being a participant in this people’s history?

The march reminded me of the scene from the movie Malcolm X where Malcolm led a disciplined army of Black Muslims down the heart of the Harlem to the police station to protest the brutal beating, incarceration and mistreatment of their fellow Black Muslim brother and to demand his immediate hospitalization…Like life imitating art, time stood still in the heart of Black Nashville as we made our way to city hall…Motorists honked horns and asked for information which was eagerly given to them by marshals…Business proprietors and homeowners stood on their porches looking in either admiration or indifference…People stared out of Barber shop and restaurant windows either transfixed by the dedication or perceived lunacy exhibited by us marchers as we literally stopped all major traffic without the assistance of police due to our sheer numbers (500 in all), audacity and discipline…Also when you are a part of a protest you don’t need permission or protection from the powers that be…Like 50 years ago we were not going to be denied our shared moment, our shared destiny…

What I originally thought to be a walk around the corner turned out to be a 5.2 mile silent odyssey into the recesses of my thoughts, actions and conscience…During this time I was able to think over how much true freedom would cost...Also I wondered when I figured out the cost would I be willing to pay the price?
When we made it to City Hall you could hear people rejoice in the small victory…There were African drummers providing the soundtrack for our victory and struggle on the steps of City Hall…Highlights included speeches by Civil Rights legends and original Silent Marchers Rev. James Lawson and Diane Nash…Also youth (student), faith and grassroots community leaders made up the powerful cadre and provided the stimulus for many of us to realize that although we came along way we still got ways to go yet in realizing a more perfect union and that we must truly develop dynamic and pro-active intergenerational relationships if we are going to reverse the curse of apathy, injustice and low expectations for generations to come…

Rev. James Lawson & R2C2H2 Tha Artivist

One major theme that was rampant throughout the City Hall rally, was the corporatized takeover of our democracy…Rev. James Lawson aka “The Conscience of the Movement”, a man who helped MLK “overstand” the power of the nonviolent-direct action philosophy, who introduced MLK to one of his most important strategists in Rev. James Bevel and who asked for his participation in the fateful Memphis sanitation workers’ strike, picked up where his fallen comrade MLK left off in denouncing the military industry complex as well as our morally depraved economic system along with our barbaric if not antiquated idea of what health care access should be for our citizens.

Tha Artivist & Diane Nash

The petite Sis. Diane Nash, “The Quiet Giant Of The Movement” & SNCC Co-Founder provided choice words weighted with wisdom, history and purpose to encourage the young and young at heart to actualize their own potential by becoming the leaders of their own liberation. In her own unique fashion she reminded us all that it is always the work and sacrifices of the committed few that change the world to benefit the many.

Freedom Fighting The Next Generation: Breaking Bread With And Sharing Food For Thought With Bro. Min. Bernard Lafayette III

Tha Artivist & Bro. Min. Bernard Lafayette III

When you participate in moments like these the chances for connecting with like minded folks as well as forming possible life long and meaningful friendships are great. I had the pleasure of meeting and fellowshipping with Bro. Min. Bernard Lafayette III, the son of the original Silent Marcher and master civil rights movement strategist Dr. Bernard Lafayette Jr. and civil rights activist and educator Dr. Colia Clark (whom he affectionately refers to as ‘The Radical’)…He is definitely the great blessed and ripen fruit fallen from the trees of true freedom fighters…

We share food for thought and literally broke bread at the Subway near the TSU campus…Eerily, the Subway was next to the Grid Iron 9 restaurant owned by football great Steve McNair, who was a victim of a murder-suicide this past summer…The substantial conversation we had for 2 plus hours made the trip a slam dunk all by itself…Bro. Min. Lafayette III added so much more dimension and reverence to the legacy of April 19, 1960, by being a socially conscious academic/theologian and effective community organizer in Nashville area as well as in Columbia, TN.

Our conversation like the ingredients in our respective sub sandwiches (he had the spicy Italian and I had the meatball marinara with pepperoni) was diverse, texturally rich, colorful, wide ranging, spicy and delicious…nothing was off limits…We did a lot of questioning and concluding…Legend has it that the great Black intellectual and famed columnist George Schuyler would travel for miles to have exceptional conversations like this…

As we spoke about legacy and purpose, Min. Lafayette relayed to me an important story about The Silent March and the Nashville lunch counter sit-in movement. When victory seemed imminent for the movement participants, the movement leaders met with the top management of one of the food cafeterias they were protesting…When the executive asked if they were hungry and what they would like to eat, one of the movement leaders said that they were not interested in having lunch with him but desegregating his restaurant...it was at that moment that Min. Lafayette Jr. intervened and said that they were integrating the restaurant by eating lunch with the white businessman…That beautiful story told me that it is possible to win a victory and then possibly lose it by not knowing when to stop…

This is what the movement was about and should be about today: each one teach one to reach all! It took the power of the people to move the agenda then and it is going to take the power of the people now to do it again…It is up to us to turn a people’s history into a people’s victory today!
