Tha Artivist Writes:
This past Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, we lost one of the trillest Southern Hip Hop Icons ever...Chad Butler a.k.a. Pimp C won't ever be forgotten...In my opinion the Underground Kingz or UGK is the link between 8 Ball & MJG and Outkast...They laid it down consistently every since the early 90s with hit after hit...Their music was made for the streets literally...Thumping and pumping from car stereos as if it was the living heart and soul of the southern hip hop movement...It is true ridah muzic!!! Don't let there group name fool you because their music and ambitions were as large, known and far reaching as the great state of Texas where these brothers from other mothers hailed from and proudly represented...Port Arthur to be exact also known as the birth place of Rock Iconoclast Janis Joplin...
Pimp C, whose father was a trumpeter for soul great Solomon Burke, was known for his beautiful trumpet like phrasing smothered with down home southern flavor and for his very real down to earth and sometimes eccentric persona...Even when he was saying off the wall stuff, you can tell that you were hearing one of the realest soldiers in the game...Like any true artist Pimp C had his ups and downs but he kept putting it down whether he was in a jail cell or in the studio...
To me Pimp C and Bun B were the Lewis and Clark of the rap game...They opened up the game and provided a gateway to the Southern Hip Hop culture for renowned East Coast artists like Jay Hova himself a.k.a. Jay Z..."Remember Big Pimpin'"??? They also helped to forge unity among their Southern Brethren as well...Remember the very successful club anthem and Three Six Mafia collabo "Sippin' On Syrup", numerous Master P collabos, Ludacris' classic banger "Stick 'Em Up", or the recently Grammy nominated classic "International Players' Anthem" with Outkast...They were true pioneers in the rap game and forged roadways that many are now traveling on...
No matter what anyone may say about their aesthetics or content, the Under Ground Kingz earned their crownz and wore them very well!!! May You Forever Trill In Peace Sir Pimp C...Long Live The Underground Kingz!!!

Pimp C Nominated For Grammy Two Days After Death
Thu Dec 6, 8:27 PM ET
Two days after he died suddenly in a Los Angeles hotel room, Texas rapper Chad "Pimp C" Butler received a Grammy nomination on Thursday.
Butler and partner Bernard "Bun B" Freeman, who performed together as UGK (Underground Kingz), were nominated for their collaboration with hip-hop duo OutKast on the tune "Int'l Players Anthem (I Choose You)."
The recording will compete in the rap performance by a duo or group category with tracks from Common featuring Kanye West, Fat Joe featuring Lil Wayne, Shop Boyz, and a partnership among West, Nas and KRS-One.
"While this nomination is bittersweet to say the least, I am thankful for the acknowledgment," Freeman said in a statement. "And as this was a lifelong dream for Chad, it warms my heart to know that he has finally gotten the recognition from the powers that be that his talent, passion and relentless drive for music so rightfully deserved."
Butler, 33, was found dead on his bed at the Mondrian Hotel in Los Angeles on Tuesday. An official with the coroner's office said on Thursday an autopsy had been performed, but further tests are pending to determine cause of death.
UGK topped the U.S. pop album charts in August with "Underground Kingz," its first entry on the survey in five years. Butler spent much of that time in prison, serving nearly four years for aggravated assault. He was paroled in 2005.
He was not the only posthumous Grammy nominee. R&B singer Gerald Levert, who died of an accidental overdose of prescription medications last year, was cited for best traditional R&B vocal performance.
Guitarist Robert Lockwood, who died last year at 91, was nominated for best traditional blues album.
