1.) Sis. Sofia Maldonado, The Creator Of Times Square Mural

Sofia Maldonado is a mural painter mixing interdisciplinary art practice with street culture. Sofia was born in Puerto Rico, to a Cuban mother in 1984. In 2002 she participated in the Sculpture and Installation Seminar at the School of Visual Arts, in New York. Between 2002 & 2006, she pursued undergraduate work in art and design at the La Escuela de Artes Plasticas. In 2006 she eaned a Painting MFA from Pratt Institute, New York. In 2009 she received a scholarship from the Cuban Artists Fund for a Vermont Studios Residency.

Maldonado most recent public projects have been presented by: Real Art Ways, CT; Graphopoli, PR; 10th Havana Biennale, Cuba; The Times Square Alliance, and the Rockefeller Brothers, NY. She has lectured community workshops at La Universidad de Puerto Rico, PR; Rollin College, FL; TUTV, Caguas; Taller Puertorriqueño, PA. She has exhibited in various group shows in California, Florida, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia, France, and New York.

The use of color in her works portrays Maldonado’s admiration for the Caribbean landscape, along with the chaos of the city and the abandoned structures within them. There is an evident blend of fashion trends, the Latina female aesthetic and various street culture elements in her visual concept. She has press in: New York Daily News, Washington Post, NY Magazine, Art in America, Art Nexus, and others.
