A Masquerade: The Press Conference Of The Absurd (April 22, 2011)
Are we really happy here
With this lonely game we play
Looking for words to say?
Searching
But not finding understanding anyway
We're lost in a mas--masquerade

Both afraid to say
We're just too far away
From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over
But the words got in the way
We're lost inside this lonely game we play~”This Masquerade” By George Benson

SCLC National Pres. Dr. Howard Creecy, Jr. Shares Well Wishes With Brenda Carter-Evans & Luell Evans After Press Conference

W.E. A.L.L. B.E. News Special Report...
7/5/2011

I, as a representative of W.E. A.L.L. B.E. News, attended a Fred Carter Hanging Update press conference on Good Friday April 22, 2011  at The Leflore County Courthouse steps…It was organized by Wendol Lee’s Operation Help Civil Rights Group…Whatever his personal motives may be, Wendol Lee for the most part has been a conduit and advocate for keeping the fire going in the search of truth and justice in the Frederick Jermaine Carter Hanging case...He has been the only organization I know of outside of W.E. A.L.L. B.E. News and even the pro-status quo Greenwood Commonwealth who has continually provided updates on this case since December when the news first broke to keep it, however fleeting, in the public’s mind…Although I may not always agree with some of his strategies, Bro. Wendol should be commended for his determination in keeping some local media attention on this case…With that said he held a joint press conference this time which included the once mighty and relevant SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference), Frederick Carter’s mother (Brenda Carter-Evans), stepfather (Luell Evans),  the family’s attorney (Valerie Hicks Powe), State Sen. David Jordan and State Rep & Leflore County NAACP Pres. Willie Perkins respectively …As I look upon the dais gathered on the courthouse steps, I couldn’t help but think of that old worn out adage, “the road to hell is always paved with good intentions”…

Although it was Bro. Wendol who actually organized and called for this gathering in solidarity to find out the truth, it was quickly hijacked by ego and a team of rivals more about posing for the cameras and singing nice sound bites than really pursuing justice…Bro. Wendol was visibly upset and quietly fuming when Attorney Valerie Hicks Powe before the press conference dictated to him the rules of engagement as it relates to media relations…She told him that he couldn’t talk about the case, which is ludicrous considering that the press conference was called so that  information about this case could be shared with the public…She then proceeded to not necessarily talk about the case but about donations…She went from being Perry Mason to Paula White in half a second …She probably said the word “donation” more than “justice” easily in her monologue…In my opinion in pursuing true justice, charity and compromise is not an option even when one is seemingly limited in empirical resources…In seeking justice one should have the mindset of “by any means necessary”, “all eyes on the prize” and not “pay to play”…

Also the SCLC, whose credibility and standing within the civil rights community has been heavily damaged and scrutinized by the internecine battle and war of attrition shamefully happening before the public and behind closed doors for the last several years, did not appear that much more effective either…It seems like they were more concerned about raising funds as well as attracting more rats to a sinking or already sunken ship in terms of an impromptu membership drive replete with basket passing…

“We celebrate black faces in high places…Now if those black faces do nothing with those high places why do we celebrate?”~The Honorable Sis. Cynthia McKinney

As far as State Sen. Jordan and State Rep. Perkins were concerned I was not that much more if at all impressed either…Mississippi has more black elected officials than any state in the union and to add even more insult to injury U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, the ranking member of the House Committee On Homeland Security, has not attempted to began nor even advocate for an independent or U.S. Department of Justice led investigation into the possible murder of one of his constituents…Among states Mississippi has the largest African American population as it relates to overall population percentage at a generous 37%...It also boasts the highest number of elected Black officials than any state in the union… However, while African Americans make up 72.2% of the state prison population, they make up only 33.3% of the student population at public four-year colleges and universities (http://www.prisonpolicy.org/scans/Miss_3.pdf)...

Also looking at Black Greenwood you would think it was a scene of a massive hate crime or war zone replete with bombed out and dilapidated homes literally on the wrong side of the tracks with folks walking around in a zombie like state of confusion and apathy, suffering a classic case of collective post-traumatic slave disorder…Baptist Town, the historic neighborhood with a proud rich cultural heritage have seen better days…The same place where the legendary Bluesman Robert Johnson wooed his last gal and jammed his last juke is now caught in a seemingly ceaseless cycle of drugs, poverty (some sources state unemployment in this neighborhood at 90%) and violence… The best looking buildings in this neighborhood seem to be the churches (hence the name ‘Baptist Town’ but I digress), but where is our people’s faith in the system or hope in justice???

Once again it has been 7 months since Bro. Carter’s body was found swinging from an oak tree and still no leads nor resolution in sight…However, looking at the indifference, belligerence, neglect and flippant attitude that Black Greenwood receives from the powers that be on the day to day it shouldn’t surprise us that these same institutional powers would care even less about getting justice for a dead Black male if they can’t or rather refuse to provide it for the living…

When informed of this seemingly collective nonchalant attitude on behalf of her colleagues during her last appearance on W.E. A.L.L. B.E. Radio last April, the Honorable Sis. Cynthia McKinney offered a scathing critique which can be heard via the following link:

And to add even further flaccidity to the moment the press conference concluded with the hand holding and the singing of “We Shall Of Overcome” and yes it was that “We Shall Overcome”…I couldn’t help but chuckle and shake my head to myself…No new information, no call to action and a half assed rendition of a tired old Negro Spiritual or a rather beyond dead horse beaten freedom anthem???  The powers that be had to be cackling to the heavens…Surely they know now beyond a shadow of a doubt that this effort for truth, justice and reconciliation was dead way before it ever began if these were to be the lead players in this play…At this point there is no investigation and the public has yet to see the information from two autopsy results, one done by the state and the other by an independent authority…But the reasons for this is not what you may think...Please read on…
