"I wrote the book because black women in America have been protected and insulated against certain kinds of criticism and examination."~Sis. Shahrazad Ali

"The black man has been critiqued, the white woman and white man have been critiqued. Everybody but us (black women). I decided that we needed a self-examination of ourselves to find out what is our share of the problems in the black community."~Sis. Shahrazad Ali

"Whenever there is a breakdown in a relationship, both parties are responsible. But we have always said it was the black man's fault. We have always said that he left us, abandoned the children, beat us and killed us and did a lot of other things to us. My book tries to examine what happens before we get to that point."~Sis.  Former police detectives Lee Cody (left) and Don Coleman visit the Civil Rights Memorial, which contains the name of Johnnie Mae Chappell.

C. Lee Cody Jr. was a detective sergeant with the sheriff's office when Johnnie Mae Chappell was killed. Lee says the sheriff's department did not assign anyone to investigate the murder, so he and his partner took on the case themselves.

Lee says he and his partner arrested the suspects, got full confessions and found the murder weapon. Still, Lee says charges against three of the four men were completely dropped. "Here is a black woman gunned down in cold blood on a dark, lonely highway, and none of them cared. We lived in a racist city and a racist town run by racist people," Lee says.

Outraged, Lee demanded answers from his bosses. Soon after, he was fired and his life began to unravel. "I got a job driving a garbage truck, and I wasn't a very good husband, and I drank too much," he says. "I was eaten up with it, there's no doubt about it."

About Johnnie Mae Chappell, Her Murder & The Cover-Up:

On March 23, 1964, race riots raged in downtown Jacksonville, Florida. Johnnie Mae Chappell, a 35-year-old wife and mother of 10 children, was not anywhere near downtown that evening, though. Instead, she was frantically searching the roadside near her home in Pickettville, the poor all-black neighborhood in the Jacksonville area, with two neighbors, hoping to find the wallet she had lost on her way home (Hastings, 2003). Unfortunately, Chappell would lose her life to senseless violence that night simply because of the color of her skin.

While Chappell and her neighbors were searching the edge of the road with a flashlight, a car carrying four white men approached. The men, who had been incensed by radio reports about the riots, were driving around looking to "get" a black person. When they saw three black individuals on the side of the road, the man seated in the front passenger seat pulled up a gun and fired. Chappell was struck in the stomach by a single bullet and died on the way to the hospital (Hastings, 2003).

As was the case with the killing of many African Americans during the Jim Crow era, Chappell's murder received very little attention. The local media mentioned her death only as a side note in stories about the riots that focused mainly on white citizens who had been injured (Murphy, 2005). Also, according to the detectives who eventually investigated and solved Chappell's murder, nobody within the local police force had ever been assigned to investigate the crime. Instead, detectives Lee Cody and Donald Coleman cracked the case somewhat by chance (Hastings, 2003).

In August 1964, five months after the murder, Cody and Coleman were approached on two separate occasions by a young man named Wayne Chessman, who said he wanted to help the detectives. The detectives were initially unsure what Chessman was talking about, but after seeing Chessman leave their second encounter in a car that matched the one that carried Chappell's murderer, the detectives decided to question Chessman at the police station. During the subsequent interview, Chessman provided a detailed account of Chappell's murder and implicated 3 other men: Elmer Kato, the driver of the car, James Alex Davis, who sat in the back seat with Chessman that night, and J.W. Rich, the shooter (Hastings, 2003). Under questioning, Kato and Rich confessed to the crime, although Rich claimed that it was an accident (Mitchell, 2010).

After Cody and Coleman completed their investigation, Chessman, Kato, Rich, and Davis were arrested and charged with first-degree murder. However, the threads of justice began to unravel at that point. The two detectives claim that they were berated by their commanding officer for investigating the crime, and they were subsequently removed from the case. Additionally, the murder weapon mysteriously disappeared. Despite the loss of evidence, the state proceeded with its case, and an all-white jury found Rich guilty of a lesser charge of manslaughter. This was a surprising result, given that many whites avoided any punishment for killing black men, women, and children throughout the Jim Crow era. Rich was sentenced to ten years in prison as a result of his conviction, but he only served three years before being released. All charges against the other three men were dropped (Hastings, 2003).

While her killers went largely unpunished for their crime, Chappell's family was torn apart following her death. The eldest five children, all daughters from Chappell's first marriage, were sent to live with various relatives on their father's side of the family. Authorities removed the five youngest children, all boys, from their father Willie's care and split them up among foster families. For over 30 years, the children had very little information about what had really happened to their mother. On the 32nd anniversary of her death, Chappell's children finally heard the story of what happened to their mother when Cody approached them at a family reunion (Hastings, 2003).

Cody and Coleman also had their lives permanently altered by the Chappell case. The detectives claim that their pursuance of the truth caused them to be demoted and, shortly thereafter, fired for insubordination. Neither man ever worked in law enforcement again, but neither ever forgot the Chappell case (Murphy, 2005).

Although the state provided little justice in the murder of Johnnie Mae Chappell, she will not be one of the forgotten or unknown. Chappell's name was added to the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, in 2000 (Mitchell, 2010). Also, in 2005, the Florida legislature honored Chappell by renaming a section of the highway where she was murdered the "Johnnie Mae Chappell Parkway" (Murphy, 2005). The memory of Chappell serves as a powerful reminder of the hatred and brutal violence that robbed so many individuals of their lives solely because of their race.

About The Kendrick Johnson Case

On Thursday, January 10, 2013, Kendrick Lamar Johnson, a 17-year-old African-American student at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia, went missing during school hours.... and on the following morning between 9:30 and 10 AM, he was found dead by fellow students during a class in one of the school's two (2) gymnasiums. A day later, a local newspaper reported Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine as saying that his investigation showed that there was "no foul play."

With little more than the discovery of a body, the authorities quickly theorized that Kendrick was reaching for a shoe when he "fell" upside down into the center opening of a rolled up section of a foam rubber mat that was standing upright in a corner of the gym. According to the sheriff's theory, when Kendrick became stuck in the mat and was unable to free himself, his upside down position caused him to suffocate. All of this is alleged to have taken place while more than 3,000 students were on the school's campus.

Almost immediately, questions were being raised, such as "Why didn't Kendrick just push over the mat to get to his shoes?" In response, Jacquelyn Johnson says her son was physically strong and had "good sense,....so the sheriff's theory is just not possible."

Kendrick's parents immediately rejected the Sheriff's explanation of what occurred, If for no other reason other than the sheriff's theory was generated from an investigation that took less than 10 hours and was released without the benefit of an eyewitness report or surveillance recordings showing their son in the area of the mats. Even more confusing is that within less than 15 minutes after Kendrick went missing, a PE class took place in the very gymnasium where his body was found. Yet no one in the gym saw or heard anything,....not to mention something such as a youngster trying to free himself.

MAKE IT VIRAL: “Windy City Police State Blues: A Major Christopher Bonds Story" 7/21/2013

W.E. A.L.L. B.E. TV: “Windy City Police State Blues: A Major Christopher Bonds Story" 7/21/2013
VIEW NOW @ THE LINK:
http://youtu.be/LSnjLod0e-g

What Happened???

MAJOR Christopher Bonds is a 24 year Army Officer and
Operation Enduring/Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn Veteran that
was wrongfully arrested and maliciously prosecuted on June 28,
2008 by the Chicago Police Department for a crime he did not
commit.

MAJOR Bonds endured over 20 hours of Police torture while in
custody (from June 28-29, 2008) by the Chicago Police
Department. He was:
1) Denied water and restroom privileges for over 8 hours.
2) Handcuffed to a ring on a wall for over 8 hours.
3) Denied any food for over 19 ½ hours.
4) Questioned by a Detective without the presence of his
Attorney.
5) Maliciously prosecuted his case without probable cause (and
did so).
6) Not allowed to make a statement to the Chicago Police or
the State's Attorney (after the arrest).

MAJOR Bonds was arrested on allegations of aggravated
assault on June 28th, 2008. The plaintiff was his wife’s 94 year
old Aunt. Both MAJOR Bonds and his wife had been the primary
care providers for her Aunt since 2003.

His wife’s Aunt was diagnosed with Dementia of the Alzheimer's type in
2006.

Prior to being arrested in 2008, MAJOR Bonds had absolutely no prior
criminal history, arrest, trouble with the law, not even a speeding ticket.

The investigation of all evidence and witnesses confirmed that no crime:
Assault, Battery, Abuse or Physical Harm in any way was ever done to his
wife’s Aunt by MAJOR Bonds (As previously stated in the formal complaint).

Even after his wife’s Aunt admitted to the Chicago Police that MAJOR
Bonds never physically harmed her, and two Chicago Paramedics examined
her and found no injuries, MAJOR Bonds was still arrested and maliciously
prosecuted (See story by Mary Mitchell, Chicago Sun-Times, and Aug 20,
2009)

The Cook County State's Attorney dismissed this case against MAJOR Bonds
on Nov 17, 2008, but refused to Expunge his record even though no crime
or conviction had ever occurred.

The goal was to make a public example out of MAJOR Bonds, an innocent
Citizen Soldier, husband and father by withholding evidence, investigation
misconduct and violation of his Civil Rights.

Even in the face of this injustice, MAJOR Bonds still deployed with his unit (Army) to
Kuwait/Iraq in 2010, (receiving the Army Meritorious Service Medal/Award), putting his
life on the line in harm’s way to protect the Freedom/Liberties of all Americans; even
the corrupt Chicago Police and the Cook County State’s Attorney that wrongfully arrested
him.

Please take a stand and in fighting these Gross Injustices by demanding the Cook
County State's Attorney Expunge and Seal the Record of MAJOR Christopher Bonds.

I was arrested on allegations of aggravated assault on June 28th, 2008. The plaintiff is
my 94 year old Aunt. My wife (Mrs. Zephye Bonds) and I had been the primary care
providers for her over the last 8 years.

At the beginning of 2008, my Aunt was diagnosed with Dementia of the Alzheimer's
type. The Physician Report from her Physician, (March 13, 2008) Dr. Bial documented
that Mrs. Susie Smith (Patient):

1) Patient has mild to moderate Dementia (Probably Alzheimer’s).
2) Patient has very poor short-term memory and impaired judgment and insight.
3) Patient does not remember the discussions from one visit to the next.
4) Patient is not able to follow directions or advice.
5) Patient does not remember to take her medications correctly.
6) Patient has been taken advantage of financially by strangers asking for money.
7) Patient is totally incapable of making personal and financial decisions.
8) Patient needs 24-hour assistance

I have served this great Nation as an Army Officer for over 24 years. I recently deployed
to Kuwait/Iraq putting my life on the line, serving my Country and protecting the Rights
of all, even the Chicago Police/Cook County State's Attorney that violated my Civil Rights
and treated me like an animal.

Would you consider doing a story or interview
on the injustice that I suffered?
