Dear Family, Friends & Sound Rally For The Future® Heads,

Just three short days after I first launched Sound Rally into the world, we get international press! Art world journalist Adrian Dannatt wrote enthusiastically about S.R.F.T.F. (2nd page story) in The Art Newspaper (arguable, the world’s finest weekly art journal, and in it’s 2009 Armory Show Edition) so it’s being read by a good number of people, and good kinds of people, worldwide. And talented photographer Linda Covello took an excellent pix of me, handing out S.R.F.T.F. Manifestos, outside the Armory Show at Manhattan’s Pier 92, on the Hudson River, which The Art Newspaper printed with said story. And of course I’ve attached the article for your reading pleasure (go to page 2., right hand side).

Try to keep in mind, Sound Rally was a mere three days old, and already getting important press. Just yesterday morning, I forwarded the story with a press release to a number of major U.S. newspapers and magazines, to continue the flow. I’m seeing more and more that the real art behind S.R.F.T.F. is how we can all exploit the www. to make universal-sized statements. And I’d love it so much if you all tried to spread the word of Sound Rally For The Future® to your peeps. Whether it be emails, facebook, youtube, twitter, or whatever, please share this with people you know will feel it. I am working on a worldwide media blitz, but in the meantime, loose lips raise possibilities. By the way, Dr. Amy Marsh, a Bay Area clinical sexologist and artist/writer, has created a fab website for Sound Rally, temporarily housed on a free server called tripod (which means we have to run ads for the moment, but the ads they put on our site are sort of ironically funny!). Also, I’d like to thank professional astrologer Patrice Kamins for doing a reading for Sound Rally (the idea of SR was born on August 19th,, 1981… how I know the exact date is a cool story for another press release) and she sees smooth sailing ahead. Who should be spotted lingering outside the Armory piers in anticipation of the grand opening but underground hip-hop legend Michael Holman, looking suitably Old Skool complete with boombox.

“I’m out here to promote my new project called Sound Rally For the Future® which is a global, mass act of humanity, making sound or noise for exactly one minute at noon, simultaneously across all global time zones, with the purpose of creating mass consciousness.” This ambitious conceptual scheme will actually take place for the first time next year, on 21 June, Summer Solstice of the year 2010, but Holman wants to be sure the whole art world will be ready to make as much racket as possible at the appointed hour. “Sound Rally For The Future® is simply the ringing and rattling of an ancient alarm clock, with pots and pans, music, prayer, shouts, by whatever means you choose. We will raise a cosmic cacophony.” And Holman sure knows what’s hip, he’s da man who took Malcolm McLaren up to the Bronx to discover breakdancing back in the dayz, so give the man a shout-out when you see him.

Sound Rally For the Future® is a global, Mass Act of Humanity, making sound/noise for exactly one minute, at noon, Eastern Standard Time (U.S.), and simultaneously across all global time zones, with the purpose of creating Mass Consciousness. Hip Hop Pioneer Pitches Memphis Urban Arts Renaissance

Celebrated Hip Hop pioneer and urban renaissance artist Michael Holman rolled into Memphis for the first time last week to spread his message of educational empowerment through the arts. A public reception and lecture by Holman at Rhodes College turned into a town hall meeting with Holman acting as moderator.

Later, at New Direction Church, Holman, who teaches graduate/undergraduate screenwriting and directing at Howard University in Washington, DC, was the keynote speaker at the 4th Annual College Preparation Forum created by Callie Herd of I. A. M. (“Inspiring Academic Motivation.”)

Advocating A New Direction

Describing Michael Holman includes listing him as an artist, urban anthropologist, educator, screenwriter and director.

A leading impresario in the early days of Hip Hop, today – as a filmmaker – Holman is an influential observer of popular culture and entertainment.

Holman was also close friends with artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, with whom he once formed a band called Gray. He wrote the screenplay for “Basquiat,” which tells the story of the meteoric rise of the youthful artist.

Holman also produced, wrote and recorded music for, as well as acted in, the classic art film “Downtown 81,” which stars Basquiat, who died at 27. Basquiat’s work is interesting as well as controversial and the fact that he was African-American and his work now sells for millions of dollars is worth noting.

As keynote speeches go, Holman’s talk at the closing of the 4th Annual College Preparation Forum at New Direction Church was truly “edutaining” (educational and entertaining) in every sense of that colorful phrase.

He advocated that one must be passionate about life by finding one’s true purpose through arts education. He urged parents as the primary providers, guardians and educators of their children to play a more proactive role in the development of their children’s education.

Holman urged them to help their children better themselves at all times possible by not only being supportive but also actively assisting their children in their goals/pursuits. One way to make children better students and people is by exposing them to cultural experiences, such as going to museums, operas, plays and live musical performances, he said.

The Basquiat Connection: A close friend of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Holman wrote the screenplay for the movie “Basquiat” and produced, wrote and recorded music, and acted in the classic art film “Downtown 81,” which stars the real Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Holman spoke poignantly about Basquiat, his close friend and collaborator. He told them that although Basquiat was portrayed as a graffiti artist from the streets by the mainstream media at the time, he actually came from a culturally proud Brooklyn household that valued education.

An education with a foundation in the arts can give the least and so-called powerless among us hope and purpose, said Holman. He mentioned an urban arts project called King’s Court that he and his artist comrades started back in the mid-90s in the southeast Anacostia area of Washington D.C.

King’s Court was a youth arts empowerment organization. The project got its name from a housing development (named after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.) in the Anacostia neighborhood, considered one of the nation’s toughest. The purpose of the organization was to empower disadvantaged African American youths through arts education.

Although they had no budget and no so–called certificate of validation of expertise from the powers that be, they were able to make an impact on the lives of five young people. Holman laments that budget constraints and other factors restricted the helping of more children.

One of the program’s goals was to develop the youths’ conceptual or critical thinking skills through arts training and application. Holman reasoned that the only way people would be motivated to change their lives for the better would be to visualize or train their mind’s eye to transform the so-called mundane reality of everyday living into something beyond the “extra” ordinary. He wanted the students to engage their environment and to have to control over their reality and possibilities by making their environment a product of them, and not the other way around.

Holman reminded parents in the crowd at New Direction that it is never too late to find your true passion and calling in life. He told the story of his brother, who considered himself a failure because his naval military career did not work out as he planned. Holman said his brother discovered a genius for electrical engineering by accident and today is an in-demand electrical engineer because he discovered his true passion or calling in life.

Holman challenged parents and students, young and old to take up new challenges in life and not to be limited by a narrow view and definition of success created by others.

Don’t let a fear of the unknown and uncertain paralyze you from taking positive risks and steps in order to advance your life’s aspirations, he said.

He also advocated leading a life of constant evolving and learning. At 52, Holman said he still is trying to learn as much as he can and to make his ultimate dreams an ultimate reality.

Holman urged the oldest members in the audience to try something new because you can never be too set in your ways to learn something new about yourself. Always trust your passions and you can never go wrong, he said.

From beginning to end, his message was constant: Have a vision for your life and make it happen through passion.

Considered  'The Father Of Hip Hop TV,' Mr. Holman created and hosted 'Graffiti Rock,' the first Hip Hop dance TV show in history that introduced the mainstream world to RUN DMC, Kool Moe Dee (The Treacherous Three) & the culture of Hip Hop. Although it lasted only one episode, the influence of 'Graffiti Rock' is still felt, helping the Hip Hop culture to become the global multi-billion dollar phenomenon it is today. He also was the manager of the legendary break dance group  known as The NYC Breakers. Today, as an award winning filmmaker, Holman is an influential observer of popular culture and entertainment.

About Graffiti Rock

In 1984, I, Michael Holman, was successful in producing and broadcasting the first ever, nation-wide, Hip Hop variety television show, Graffiti Rock. The show featured Run DMC's greatest televised performance ever (of "Sucker M.C.'s"), as well as Kool Moe Dee and Special K of The Treacherous Three, The New York City Breakers, and a studio dance crowd that included the likes of young Vincent Gallo (Buffalo 66, Brown Bunny) and Debi Mazar (Goodfellas, L.A. Law, Entourage).

Soon, it will be the 30th Anniversary of the airing of Graffiti Rock and through your contributions, we will re-master the 1 inch broadcast video tape of the show (on to DVD) as well as produce a new, feature length film called Graffiti Rock: The Untold Story. Graffiti Rock: The Untold Story will be an in-depth documentary that captures the memories and reactions of today's Hip Hop celebrities to first seeing Graffiti Rock, and how it impacted their lives. The documentary will also capture the "behind the scenes" making of Graffiti Rock, as well as my own personal experiences and accomplishments as a Hip Hop Pioneer, helping to introduce Hip Hop Culture to New York's Downtown Art Scene and eventually to the rest of the world.

Along with the 30th Anniversary release of Graffiti Rock, combined with Graffiti Rock: The Untold Story documentary, we will include in the DVD package:

Never-before-seen footage from my private, Hip Hop video collection, including: the first Hip Hop film ever made, Catch a Beat featuring Crazy Legs and the Rock Steady Crew; and rare, unseen, local, New York cable Hip Hop television shows from 1982, featuring DJ Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Jazzy Jay, Fab 5 Freddy, Doug E. Fresh, Grand Mixer DXT, DJ Jazzy Joyce (first female Hip Hop DJ), K-Rob and the New York City Breakers.

In addition, some of the incentives to pledge support to this history making project are: a signed vinyl recording by Kool Moe Dee of a remix of the Graffiti Rock theme song; limited edition posters and T-shirts; a reproduction of a Graffiti Rock Press & Production Kit (including loads of historical documents, flyers, etc.); opportunities to spend time with me in New York City in a social and educational capacity; and the chance to be personally credited in both Graffiti Rock, The 30th Anniversary Edition and Graffiti Rock: The Untold Story.
