Show Summary

On Sunday July 6, 2008 W.E. A.L.L. B.E. News & Radio had the honor and privilege of hearing Dr. Coby Smith speak...He not only gave us insight into his amazing life's journey, but he also imparted invaluable information on the Memphis he knew growing up...A true mini-history lesson of sorts...

Dr. Coby Smith himself is no stranger to making history...He was the first African American to graduate from prestigious Southwestern College (now known as Rhodes College)...Along with his friend Dr. Martin Luther King and others, Dr. Coby Smith helped to complete "The March Against Fear" campaign which was started by James Meredith (the first African American to graduate from the University of Mississippi a.k.a. Ole Miss), but who couldn't finish because he was injured by sniper shots...

Dr. Coby Smith was also the leader/founding member of the legendary Memphis Invaders, a formidable Black Power organization which was the Memphis equivalent of the Black Panther Party...The Memphis Invaders were significant players in the last days of MLK in Memphis...Dr. King was working with them on the Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike March...Dr. King was also creating plans for the effective grass roots youth organization to help him with his upcoming Poor People's Campaign in Washington D.C....Unfortunately, fate had other plans...

Dr. Smith is the first interview in our "If Memphis Could Talk" series which are special segments that focus on the forgotten or little known history of Memphis,Tn, in particular its under appreciated/under reported Black History...So get ready to learn more of what you knew and didn't know about the Bluff City a.k.a. City of Good Abode a.k.a. Home of the Blues & Rock-n-Roll...Please look out for more installments on W.E. A.L.L. B.E. News & Radio...

As always please spread the good news...
