FBI Report: Woman Emmett Till 'Whistled' @ Still Alive...

Carolyn Donham, 70, of Greenville, Miss., in this image from video taken August, 2004, by a 60 Minutes video crew, who was named Carolyn Bryant, is allegedly the woman whistled at by Emmett Till, a black Chicago teenager visiting a cousin in Money Miss., in 1955. The district attorney in rural Leflore County, Miss. had sought a manslaughter charge against Bryant Donham, who was suspected of pointing out to her husband to punish the boy, but a grand jury has refused to bring any new charges. Till, a black teenager, was beaten and shot in 1955. No one has ever been convicted in the slaying.

The FBI Report On The Murder Of Emmett Till

An undated portrait shows Emmett Till, a black 14-year-old Chicago boy, who was brutally murdered near Money, Mississippi, Aug. 31, 1955, after whistling at a white woman. On March 30, the Federal Bureau of Investigation publicly released its 2006 report on the Emmett Till case. In 1955, Till, a black teenager from Chicago, went to Mississippi to visit relatives. During a trip to a store, he whistled at a white woman named Carolyn Bryant, the wife of the store's owner. Shortly thereafter, Mrs. Bryant's husband Roy and her brother-in-law J.W. Milam kidnapped Till. Emmett's mangled body was found a few days later. A local jury acquitted Milam and Bryant of murder, but the pair later acknowledged that they had slain the fourteen-year-old Till. The two admitted murderers are both dead, but evidence recently uncovered by filmmaker Keith Beauchamp indicated to federal authorities that there might have been other perpetrators who remained alive.

The U.S. Department of Justice re-opened the case in 2004. In 2006, the FBI passed its report on to the local district attorney, Joyce Chiles, and advised her to focus her investigation on Carolyn Bryant (by then remarried and going under her new husband's name of Donham). In February 2007, a grand jury refused to indict Bryant-Donham on the charge of manslaughter. The newly released FBI report offers the closest view yet of the case. Large portions of the document are blanked out, but the visible text reveals that the Bureau collected a great deal of evidence against Bryant-Donham.

One of the goals for the unnamed agent(s) who wrote the report was to establish the time frame for the murder. Numerous witnesses stated that the whistling incident took place on August 24, 1955. On August 28, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam took Emmett Till from his great uncle's home at gunpoint. Till's body was discovered in the Tallahatchie River on August 31. Over the years, much uncertainty has remained about the events that followed Emmett's abduction.

A timeline in the report reveals a key part of the story:

"Sunday – August 28, 1955 – Time Unknown, Early Morning: Roy Bryant, J.W. Milam and a man named Kimbrell brought Till to (name blanked out) at Bryant's Grocery and Meat Market in Money, Mississippi."

Roy and Carolyn Bryant lived in rooms behind the storefront. The timeline states that Till was not murdered at the store, so the most likely explanation is that the kidnappers took him there to be identified by the woman he had offended. (Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam were not in town on the day of Till's confrontation with Carolyn Bryant.) The rest of the available evidence confirms that interpretation. At the 1955 murder trial, both Sheriff George Smith and one of his deputies testified that Roy Bryant admitted taking Till to his wife at the store to verify that he was the one they sought.

Whether Mrs. Bryant identified Till is a vital question. In 1955, Mississippi law defined manslaughter as "killing of a human being, by the act, procurement, or culpable negligence of another." Camille Nelson, a Saint Louis University law professor and an expert on criminal law, explains the idea of culpable negligence: "The question is, would a similarly situated reasonable person have recognized what identifying Till could lead to? This 'ought to have known' test is central to establishing negligence." So if Mrs. Bryant identified Till and knew (or should have known) that he might be killed as a result, that would be manslaughter. Nelson adds that, "at the very least, given the socio-political climate of the day, [Mrs. Bryant] ought to have known that Emmett Till was in grave danger."

The report contains a first-person account of the meeting at the store on the night that Till was murdered—an account not found in the 1955 trial transcript. The story appears twice, with slightly different deletions each time. On the second occasion, the text states that the speaker was Carolyn Bryant-Donham. In her statement, she confirmed that the kidnappers brought Till to the store, but several key sections have been blanked out:

"I think it happened pretty much like he, like they said. I think they probably asked me who, if (long blank) I believe. Because I really think no matter what (long blank) said no that's not him because (blank). I think he (Roy Bryant) told me he was gonna take him back."

The words "no that's not him" could be taken to support the theory that Mrs. Bryant told her husband that Till was not the one she had seen at the store a few days earlier. However, the context is missing and the words that can be seen are at least as consistent with admission as denial. For instance, the opening of the sentence—"Because I really think no matter what (blank)"—suggests that she was trying to explain the fact that she identified Till and to downplay her role in his death. The claim that her husband told her that he was going to "take (Till) back" would be consistent with Mrs. Bryant refusing to identify Emmett, but that would not explain why he was murdered immediately thereafter. The most telling aspect of that section is the heading, which somehow escaped deletion. It describes Bryant-Donham's statements as "admissions."

The report offers further indication of Mrs. Bryant's involvement in the crime. An anonymous African-American man gave a statement that on one evening shortly before the Till murder, a group of men drove up in a truck, grabbed him, and threw him in the back. A black man he knew named Washington was the one who seized him, but Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam were both in the vehicle. Bryant ordered Washington to throw the young man off the truck after someone whose name is deleted said, "that's not the nigger!" and "Roy, I keep telling ya, that's not the one." The vehicle then drove off.

That story matches an account published in the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper in 2004. In the newspaper article and in the report, the victim stated that he was carrying molasses and snuff home from a nearby store when the attack occurred and that he suffered broken teeth during the incident. In the Times-Picayune article, the victim, Willie Lee Hemphill, specified that Carolyn Bryant was the one who told the men that he was "not the one." That shows that the kidnappers looked to Mrs. Bryant to provide identification. In contrast to Hemphill, who was released on her word, Till was tortured and murdered after the men asked her to identify him. Likewise, Carolyn Bryant's involvement in the two cases demonstrates that she participated in efforts to kidnap Till over some time.

District Attorney Chiles was unavailable for comment on the FBI report. For their part, many in the news media have assumed that Carolyn Bryant was a helpless pawn in a murder plot hatched by her husband and brother-in-law. Randy Sparkman put that case bluntly in an article for Slate magazine, writing that Mrs. Bryant was "a Southern wife who did as (she was) told" and who "would have felt (she) had no other choice." But when weighing Bryant-Donham's culpability, it is crucial to recall exactly what she told her husband about the incident at the store. She claimed that Till grabbed her hand and asked "How about a date, baby?" After she struggled loose, Bryant said, Till put his hands around her waist and asked, "What's the matter, baby? Can't you take it?" Other statements she attributed to Emmett included an "unprintable word," and assurances that he had been "with white women before."

In 1955 Mississippi, black males were lynched for far less than that. Mrs. Bryant's lurid claims inspired the men who committed the murder, and the evidence shows that she was lying. According to Till's mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, and other relatives, Emmett suffered from polio at age five and was left with a speech impediment that would have made it impossible for him to say the words Mrs. Bryant attributed to him without halting or stammering. (Bryant-Donham's various accounts of the incident at the store never included any mention of a stammer.) Also, Ruthie Mae Crawford, who accompanied Till to the store that day, said that he did nothing more threatening than put money into Mrs. Bryant's hand while making his purchase and whistle at her once outside.

Bryant-Donham claimed that a witness saw the latter moments of her confrontation with Emmett and could confirm that part of her account. She stated that her brother-in-law's wife, Juanita Milam, was in the back room of the store on the day of the incident. According to Bryant, after Till grabbed her, she "called out" to Mrs. Milam and asked her to come to the front room. In the report, however, Juanita Milam "stated she was not at the store when this incident occurred." She also told the FBI that she believed that Mrs. Bryant made up the whole story: "The only way I can figure it is that she did not want to take care of the store. She thought this wild story would make Roy take care of the store instead of leavin' her with the kids."

The evidence that Bryant-Donham lied about her meeting with Till shatters the image of her created by elements of the press. She looks far more like an instigator of violence against Till than a passive wife who "had no other choice." She must have known that, after hearing her false story, her husband and the others were likely to kill Emmett. All they needed was someone to identify him.

There appears to be a large discrepancy between the report's evidence against Carolyn Bryant-Donham and the grand jury's decision not to indict her. Of course, it is always possible that some evidence did not hold up in court. However, it is rare that a grand jury refuses a prosecution request for an indictment. In light of Mississippi's terrible record on racial issues in general and on the Till murder in particular, this case demands further scrutiny.

Maybe if we're lucky, she'll die like the rotten bitch she is. If it were up to me, I'd give her a choice--get tied to a manchineel tree for a week or marched into deep quicksand with a heavy indystrial fan chained to HER neck. White trash lowlife bitch!

This is a great blog you've got here- and great information. This story is one I have discovered today, and have started to write about on my brand new blog. I'd love for you to check it out. Again, thank you for the great information. May Emmett forever rest in peace, and may we never forget his story or what it means.

The bitch lives in Greenville, MS, where I understand the population is 70% black. Why has some black person not bothered to sort her out? surely people must see the cow going about her normal business in town. Her address apparently is:

^^ Actually you're one digit off on the address. Aren't you concerned that you could be placing an innocent person in jeopardy? I hate to say it, but your reverse racism and knee-jerk fanaticism makes you just a little better than the thugs who callously murdered Till. You may not be a murderer, but your mindset is sadly very much the same as Bryant, Milam, et al.

If Carolyn Donham is not fully brought to justice in this life, she will surely receive it in the next. She's an old woman now, so she certainly must have considered what the afterlife might hold for her.

mad as hell said...

hey anonymous.... you're not even close when you say its close to being murderous thugs like bryant and milam.. you know why??? cuz he was a little kid you dumb ass! a little kid who thought some white lady was pretty enough to pay her a compliment by whistling at her! WOW... REALLY? they felt threatened by him, or had just so much hatred for a little boy with dark skin that they thought that was fair and appropriate actions to take. really? what are you some really stupid person. she should have never made it to the next night fall for what she did. neither should have her husband and the other guy. sadly not only did the justice dept fail this little boy but so did his entire black race. if they had just stood up in numbers to these white racist pricks this little boy wouldn't have been so severely and brutally murdered. who in their right mind could ever do such a thing? and who in their right mind could ever believe that having lighter skin makes you a "better, or more important" person! i'm embarrassed to say i'm a white person when i hear of shit like this and people who feel like this. i spit on them. and carolyn donham i hope when its your time and your maker sits before you and asks you why you feel you deserve to cross into heaven and through the pearly gates that you are judged for your actions and sent directly to hell to serve out a eternity of torture for what you did to this little kid! and for the record. she was ugly and looked bitchy, still does!

"Actually you're one digit off on the address. Aren't you concerned that you could be placing an innocent person in jeopardy?"

Very good point.

"I hate to say it, but your reverse racism"

There's no such thing.

"and knee-jerk fanaticism makes you just a little better than the thugs who callously murdered Till."

Are you kidding? I hope no one close to you is ever kidnapped and murdered.

"If Carolyn Donham is not fully brought to justice in this life, she will surely receive it in the next."

I repeat--are you kidding?

Apart from the fact that we have no scientific reason to believe there will be any 'next' life after we die...why would you wish her to be 'brought to justice' in her supposed afterlife, when you've just rebuked the previous poster for his/her vindictiveness? You do realize that it's vindictive to wish someone would be 'brought to justice', (though the latter euphemism sounds so much better), right?

I don't want to see the old hag slammed into prison. I don't believe in punitive sentences at all, with the kind of institutions we have. But I can hardly blame others for being furious that she and her husband have not done any time for this crime when most people in prison now haven't done anything nearly as evil.

I just read the book and I am very upset. I dont believe Emmit whistled at the intention of doing it to the white woman. As a young boy he stutterd. Ithink he was happy and excited to be with his cousins and whistled to placate himself before continuimg to have fun with his cousins.l He was doing what his mom told him growing up which was if he got overly excited and stuttered, to slow down whistle and start over. And the lies they told on Emmit. He was a young boy unaware of so much hatred in the world.

It is a sad case and story. I believe in GOD the ALMIGHTY. I believe there is a life after this one. It is sad that the offenders was not brought to justice in his (Emmitt Till), his mother's, his uncles, or our lifetime. Who are we to judge? I am sure that she lives with the fact that a young boy was murdered on her behalf. I am sure that she doesn't have peace and can't sleep at night knowing that Emmitt was killed because of her. I don't think the excuse of that "she was a passive wife" will go by with my MAKER. I too am a passive wife, even so I know that my actions do have consequences. I don't think that it is right to air out her address to the world. Nor do I think that it was right that she pointed him out knowing what her husband and brother in law would do. I believe what goes around come around, I also believe that GOD has a plan. Maybe it is his plan to let her live out her life in misery for what she had done. The two that committed the murder is dead. I as a black woman who have read the many stories related to this case is hurt that this young man didn't get to see the many years that GOD blessed me with. As I had said before, GOD has a plan. A plan that we may not understand. GOD has the power to heal us of any wound, and no weapon formed against us shall prosper. But GOD saw fit to call him home on that day. It may not have been the circumstances that we imagined but GOD called Emmitt Till home.
I don't understand how we as people can say such nasty things and believe in GOD also. GOD is love, understanding, and forgiving. If you know GOD, you know the HE forgives as you or I would want to be forgiven. We are not to judge this woman. We don't know what relationship she has with GOD. I would pray for her to repent and to make good with her life. I don't wish that she die a horrible death, that is not me nor is it my GOD. I don't think that this woman has lived all these years and not once thought about what had happened to that young man. Especially if she is a christian. I just pray that GOD has mercy on her soul. Not the kind of mercy her then husband and brother and law had on little young Emmitt Till.

Based on most of your comment, you must feel very emotional and even a sense of hatred to old women.. The past is gone and she never got away with that little boys life she still lives with it today. When her eyes close, he's there, when she wants to daydream he's there, EVERY-TIME she hears a whistling so he's there until she dies.. so in many ways she's getting what she deserves and her guilt and shame will eat and condemn her soul.

John said...

All of the cursing and condemning the men who allegedly killed Emmett Till isn't going to bring back the boy, nor will whoever is responsible will ever receive their just rewards. All the hate festering over this crime only tends to inflame more hate and hostility.Of course What happened to the boy was a terrible, senseless act of violence, but it's time now to try to put it all behind us and move on. Our purpose now ought be to help improve better race relations among all people the world over. And if anyone who reads this thinks I speak in these terms as a white man, then you are sadly mistaken.

Some commited as late as 1993 with no justic, some still happening in small white towns today. I've never seen so much hatred for on one blog pg.what was done to Till in 1955 was wrong & brutal. But let those who commit these crimes and acts suffer at their own hands by living their lives filled with guilt and shame & let all that evil consume theirs souls.

This whole thing is disgusting. Utterly disgusting. This murder, the murderers, the outcome and all of these ignorant comments on this page--disgusting. The only good things that came from this however is the fact that this case pushed for change and really gave the civil rights movement momentum. It's a damn shame that the murderers didn't receive a single form of punishment for their actions and that the grand jury somehow didn't indict her. It's disgusting.
And all of you saying she should die and/or murdered, all of you disgust me. What the hell is hatred against them going to help? Nothing. You just look like an idiot and an asshole.
And those of you that think that the African American population could just "stand" up against the small white community. Did you miss the civil rights movement? Or the fact that people DID try to stand up to white people and paid with their lives? Emmitt Till wasn't the first to be murdered like this--but it was the case that started change.
I am sickened by all of you leaving hateful and unhelpful comments and by the people who allowed this to happen, and who allowed the guilty to be free.

The torture those men did towards that kid was cruel and evil. I know they are getting what they deserve right now by burning in hell. For Mrs. Bryant, there's no way you could have felt threatened by a little 14 year old boy. I wonder how the world would have handled this situation if it was a white boy tortured and killed by a black man.? Our ancestors suffered terribly but guess what? Its a new motherfucking day! So try that prejudice shit now?!

It is the year 2013 and even though they tried to wipe 14 year old Emmet Till off the face of the earth, they could not. They gave him eternal life. They made his presences stronger and louder. They give him the power to fight with a strength not of this world. Emmet Tills body left this world, but the soul of this young man never died. It is proven by my 14 year old son who asked me about him and wants to know the story. So people no need to hate her believe me she is paying for what she did. Come on think about it, she is in the history books as the person responsible for the horrific death of a child that paid her a compliment . Now lets raise our sons and daughter to be all that they can be and teach them the fight for our rights is not over. Don't let his death be for nothing.

Reasonable People

The Law Professor has legally proven that Carolyn Bryant is guilty under the pretense that she ought to have known that Emmett Till was in danger of losing his life. "The question is, would a similarly situated reasonable person have recognized what identifying Till could lead to? This 'ought to have known' test is central to establishing negligence." So if Mrs. Bryant identified Till and knew (or should have known) that he might be killed as a result, which would be manslaughter. Nelson adds that, "at the very least, given the socio-political climate of the day, [Mrs. Bryant] ought to have known that Emmett Till was in grave danger." She knew. She reasonably knew. She still knows. The Justice Department, FBI and Grand jury reasonably knows and are implicit as well. It’s morally reprehensible that in this day and time that people won’t rectify and make amends for a child’s prematurely snuffed out life.
A Selfishly Apathetic Woman
This disgusting woman knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that whatever black male was brought to her for identification was in grave danger. She knew this. She had every opportunity to covertly alert anyone that this child was in danger. She could have secretly appealed to a pastor or anyone in the black community to let them know that someone should get that child out of the city immediately. I get the ‘southern wife’ being afraid and obedient till death of their white trash redneck illiterate husbands. I understand that if she crossed her scumbag, inbred, low class, low life, mentally impoverished, uncivilized, tasteless, morally inferior, common piece of trash, mentally undeveloped spiritually bankrupt racist husband that she risked harm also. But that is no excuse. She had options. She could have secretly told anyone in the black community to watch out. May be she couldn’t have gone to the law she could have leaked out a heads up to any black customer that she knew who could be trusted with the information that Bryant and Milan was going to harm a child. There is no excuse for her profound apathy.

Anonymous said...

Everyone failed Emmett Till that day. No one involved is blameless.
As for Ruthie Mae Crawford, there is no excuse for her apathy either! She DEFINATELY knew Till should have been sent away TOO!! Ms. Crawford heard Till whistle at that white woman. She knew what the penalty of that was during that time period in Mississippi. Everybody, even little children were aware of the trouble they could get into for just approaching whites with ‘sass’ or what whites thought was ‘disrespectable behavior’.
I’m Human, Too
I would like to call this woman a host of inhuman names. I would like to classify her as a soulless, Godless, calloused and low-class piece of trash unworthy of living among people. I want her to suffer every remaining second of her worthless life. I would be a hypocrite if I said I don’t want her to suffer right now because I do. I am human and the flesh is weak. I want this woman to dream of Emmett every time she goes to sleep, takes a nap or whenever she tries to rest peacefully. I don’t want her to experience any joy in the remainder of her life. If she has grandchildren, I would like for them to experience harm. I would like for her to see her young innocent grandchildren injured repeatedly--just violently tortured as Emmett was just but not killed. I would want them to live to be beaten again and again. I want her to HURT, HURT, SUFFER, HURT and CONSTANTLY HURT! I want her to pay! I want everyone involved to hurt and suffer as that child did. I feel the same as others who thinks she's filth. I cannot judge her only God can. If she has repented then she has been forgiven and her slate is clean with the Lord. I’m so confused about my feelings of disgust for this woman. It’s so easy to hate. Ya’ll, aren’t we taught in the Bible that if we repent we are forgiven? May be she has repented and therefore is forgiven and saved by God and it is us who are in breach of God’s law. I am so ashamed that I can empathize with others sentiments. I guess my feelings are just human understanding. But my soul is convicted because I know Christ said to love our neighbors as His Father loves Him, and He loves us.

White people blamed everything on people of color back in the day. Emmet never whistled at that women, and she probably was wet from seeing a northerner in her parts of the woods. However, people of today need to stay in his or her place and let Emmet Till rest. Lil Wayne never knew a real time gangster and if lived in those times would've been the same coward as he is today. Emmet excepted the blame for someone else's freshness.
