Malcolm X's Daughters Unhappy With New Book

NPR Interview With Ilyasah Shabbaz, Malcolm X's Daughter:

Malcolm X's Daughters Unhappy With New Book
By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP National Writer Nekesa Mumbi Moody, Ap National Writer Wed Apr 6, 11:37 pm ET

NEW YORK – Two of Malcolm X's daughters are unhappy that a new biography alleges their parents' marriage was strained and that their mother — and possibly their father — were unfaithful.

The marriage "was definitely faithful and devoted because my father was a man of impeccable integrity, and I think that most people, if they're not clear on anything, they're clear that he was moral and ethical and had impeccable character," Ilyasah Shabazz said Wednesday.

Ilyasah and Malaak Shabazz spoke to The Associated Press about "Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention." Author Manning Marable, a highly respected scholar who worked for more than 20 years on the book, died last week of complications of pneumonia just before publication. Malcolm X's daughters did not speak to Marable for the book, which draws upon thousands of interviews, government documents and private papers.

The book has been in the top 10 on Amazon.com's best-seller list, and the print run has been increased from 46,000 to 70,000, according to Viking, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA).

Viking spokeswoman Carolyn Coleburn said the publisher had no comment about the daughters' criticisms.

While both sisters acknowledged they have yet to read the book, they questioned reports about the contents. Marable had intended "Malcolm X" as a tribute to the slain activist's life and influence, but he also wanted to avoid portraying him as "a saint, without the normal contradictions and blemishes that all human beings have," as the historian wrote in the introduction.

Malcolm X was assassinated in 1965. His wife, Betty Shabazz, died in 1997 after one of her grandchildren set fire to her apartment.

The book alleges that parts of "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," a classic released after Malcolm X's death that sold more than 1 million copies, were inaccurate. For instance, Marable questions details of Malcolm X's early life as a criminal, writing that Malcolm likely exaggerated his wrongdoings. Questions about the autobiography's accuracy have been raised for decades, and Marable addresses questions about the book's co-writer, Alex Haley, who many believe left out or softened Malcolm's more radical political views in the last couple of years of his life.

He also looks into Malcolm X's more controversial words and actions, including a meeting with members of the Ku Klux Klan in the early 1960s. At the time, he was a high-ranking member of the Nation of Islam and had discussed with the Klan the possibility of the nation purchasing land for blacks to live on. Malcolm X would later express regret, although Marable still called the meeting "despicable."

Marable subtitled the book "A Life of Reinvention" in part because Malcolm X acknowledged mistakes and transformed and transcended himself, from street hustler and convict to black separatist of fierce anti-white opinions to political and social activist seeking to work with all races, worldwide. His marriage, however, was widely seen as steady, close and supportive, especially as dramatized by Denzel Washington and Angela Bassett in Spike Lee's movie "Malcolm X." Shabazz herself would remember her years with Malcolm as "hectic, beautiful and unforgettable — the greatest thing in my life."

Malcolm X married Betty Sanders, a nurse and fellow member of the Nation of Islam, in 1958. They had six children. According to the book, the marriage was often tense, in part because of Malcolm's wish to have a traditional, subservient Muslim wife and because he was away so often and his life was often threatened. There were problems of emotional and physical intimacy. Marable includes a letter from Malcolm to Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad that offers a blunt account of their home life, with Malcolm reporting that his wife believed they were "incompatible sexually." Malcolm also tells Muhammad that Betty had threatened to "seek satisfaction elsewhere."

Marable writes that Betty became involved in 1964 with Charles Kenyatta, a close associate of Malcolm's. Malcolm, too, may have had affairs, although the evidence is uncertain. He knew of the relationship between his wife and Kenyatta, according to the book, and "the news of infidelity seems to have loosened Malcolm's own marital bonds."

Malaak Shabazz said there "may have been a little bit of stress, like any marriage," but that "there was really no times for shenanigans. She raised the children at home; he worked on a global level."

From The Honorable Sis. Cynthia McKinney: Anatomy Of A Murder: How NATO Murdered Qaddafi Family Members

From The Honorable Sis. Cynthia McKinney: Anatomy Of A Murder: How NATO Murdered Qaddafi Family Members
28 May 2011

How many times must a parent bury a child?

Well, in the case of Muammar Qaddafi it's not only twice: once for his daughter,
murdered by the United States bombing on his home in 1986, and again on 30 April 2011 when his youngest son, Saif al Arab, but yet again for three young children, grandbabies of Muammar Qaddafi killed along with Saif at the family home.

Now, I watched Cindy Sheehan as she bared her soul before us in her grief; I cried when Cindy cried.  Now, how must Qaddafi and his wife feel?  And the people of Libya, parents of all the nation's children gone too soon.  I don't even want to imagine.

All my mother could say in astonishment was, "They killed the babies, they killed his grandbabies."

The news reports, however, didn't last more than one half of a news cycle because on 1 May, at a hastily assembled press conference, President Obama announced the murder of Osama bin Laden.

Well, I haven't forgotten my empathy for Cindy Sheehan; I haven't forgotten my concern for the children of Iraq that Madeleine Albright said were OK to kill by U.S. sanctions if U.S. geopolitical goals were achieved.  I care about the children of Palestine who throw stones at Israeli soldiers and get laser-guided bullets to their brains in return.  I care about the people of North Africa and West Asia who are ready to risk their lives for freedom.  In fact, I care about all of the children--from Appalachia to the Cancer Alley, from New York City to San Diego, and everywhere in-between.

On 22 May 2011, I had the opportunity to visit the residence of the Qaddafi family, bombed to smithereens by NATO.  For a leader, the house seemed small in comparison, say, to the former Clinton family home in Chappaqua or the Obama family home.  It was a small whitewashed suburban type house in a typical residential area in metropolitan Tripoli.  It was surrounded by dozens of other family homes.

I spoke with a neighbor who described how three separate smart bombs hit the home and exploded, another one not exploding.  According to the BBC, the NATO military operations chief stated that a "command and control center" had been hit. That is a lie.  As anyone who visits the home can see, this home had nothing to do with NATO's war.  The strike against this home had everything to do with NATO adopting a policy of targeted assassination and extra-judicial killing--clearly illegal.

The neighbor said he found Saif Al-Arab in his bedroom underneath rubble; the three young grandchildren were in a different room and they were shredded to pieces.  He told of how he picked up as many pieces as he possibly could.  He told us that there are still pieces there that he could not get.  He asked us to note the smell--not the putrid smell of rotting flesh, but a sweet smell.  I did smell it and thought there was an air freshener nearby.  It smelled to me of roses.  He asked me why this was done and who was going to hold NATO accountable.

Muammar Qaddafi was at the house.  But he was outside near where the animals are kept.  It is a miracle that he survived.  From the looks of that house and the small guest house beside it, the strike was a complete success if the goal was to totally and thoroughly demolish the structure and everything inside it.

NATO wants us to believe that toys, items and clothing, an opened Holy Koran, and a soccer board game are the appointments found in military command and control offices.  I wonder if we could find such articles in NATO's office in Brussels.

The opened Holy Koran seemed to be frozen in time.  In fact, there was a clock dangling from its cord--dangling in space.  And indeed, for the four young people in that house at the time of NATO's attack, time had stopped.

The concussion fron the bombs were so great that eery tile on the walls and floors of the home had been knocked from the walls.  Black burn marks scorched the walls.  The force broke a marble or granite countertop.  The bathtub was literally split into two parts.  Shards of the bomb were everywhere.  I wondered if the place was now contaminated with depleted uranium.

The Qaddafi home is a crime scene--a murder scene.  The United States prisons are full of men and women who are innocent--even on death row.  I wonder where the guilty who are never prosecuted go.

Now, if the International Court of Justice were really a repository of justice, it would be investigating this crime.  Instead, it is looking for yet another African to prosecute.  We in the United States are familiar with this:  on our local news every night, we are saturated with photos of Black and Brown criminals with the implication being that White people don't commit crime.  The moment the face of someone arrested is not shown, then we know that the culprit is White.  It's the unwritten code that we people of color all live by wherever in the world we might happen to be.  Global apartheid is alive and well and exists on many levels.

I left the house sick in my heart.  As I was about to depart, the neighbor begged me, asked me over and over again, why had this happened?  What had they done to deserve this?  He seemed to not want me to leave.  Honestly, I think I was his little piece of America, his little piece of President Obama and I could help him to understand why this course of action was necessary from my President's point of view.  He said NATO should just leave them alone and let them sort out their problems on their own.

I did leave his presence, but that man's face will never leave me.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. warned, "History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people."

In response to my previous article, "NATO, A Feast of Blood," I received the following quite about Buddha from Shiva Shankar who excerpted Walpola Rahula's "What The Buddha Taught:"

"... The Buddha not only taught non-violence and peace, but he even went to the field of battle itself and intervened personally, and prevented war, as in the case of the dispute between the Sakyas and the Koliyas, who were prepared to fight over the question of the waters of the Rohini. And his words once prevented King Ajatasattu from attacking the kingdom of the Vajjis. ...

... Here is a lesson for the world today. The ruler of an empire publicly turning his back on war and violence and embraced the message of peace and non-violence. There is no historical evidence to show that any neighbouring king took advantage of Asoka's piety to attack him militarily, or that there was any revolt or rebellion within his empire during his lifetime. On the contrary there was peace throughout the land, and even countries outside his empire seem to have accepted his benign leadership. ..."

Please don't allow special interest press and war mongering gatekeepers of the left to blot out the tragedy unfolding in Libya.  Please don't allow them to take away our chance to live in peace throughout our land and with countries inside and outside our hemisphere.  Congress should vote to end NATO's action in Libya and barring that should assert its Constitutional prerogatives and require the President to come to it for authorization of this war.  And then, Congress should heed the wisdom of the people of our country who are against this war and vote for peace.

What Would Malcolm Say About Obama

  (C) Carlos Latuff
What Would Malcolm Say About Obama

From the Ramparts
Junious Ricardo Stanton

“The real religion of Islam doesn’t teach anyone to judge another human being by the color of his skin. The yardstick that is used by the Muslim to measure another man is not the man’s color but by his deeds, his conscious behavior, the man’s intention and when you use that as the standard of measurement you never go wrong. But when you just judge a man because of the color of his skin you are committing a crime because that’s the worst kind of judgment.” ~El Hajj Malik El Shabazz

As we pause to honor the life, legacy and memory of Malcolm Little a.k.a.  “Detroit Red” “Satan” Malcolm X and finally El Hajj Malik El Shabazz on his natal day May 19th, we learn he was a committed seeker of Truth who was uncompromising in his quest for justice and right. Based upon his love of Black people, what he stood for, his world view and evolving philosophy it is good we pay homage and respect to him. Malcolm was a model for us. He demonstrated personal redemption and transformation are possible even in an insane society such as ours.

Malcolm was born into a family that believed in “race first”. His parents were avid and active Garveyites. Later despite severe social hardship following the death of his father, his mother being institutionalized due to an emotional breakdown, Malcolm fell into a culture of depravity and crime; but when he was exposed to the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad while in prison he saw the light. Malcolm made a conscious decision to change, he rekindled his dormant pursuit of intellectual growth and personal development. He honed his reading and oratory skills after he joined the Nation of Islam and he was eventually elevated by Mr. Muhammad to become the national spokesperson for the NOI.

The socially and politically conscious Malcolm was on a collision course with the status quo. Malcolm helped spread the teachings of Elijah Muhammad and had a huge hand in the growth of the movement.  But Malcolm disobeyed Mr. Muhammad when he commented publically on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Mr Muhammad had warned his ministers not to say anything controversial about Kennedy’s assassination because the nation was in mourning and folks were caught up in the emotion of it all. But when asked by the media for a statement, Malcolm spoke truth to power by saying the US had assassinated leaders all over the world and now the chickens had come home to roost.

Malcolm’s keen insight into geopolitics as truthful as it was, created a rift between him and NOI hierarchy which eventually led to him leaving the Nation and starting his own Pan-African organization. This rift was ultimately capitalized upon by the US government’s covert counterinsurgency campaign called  COINTELPRO as a cover to assassinate Malcolm. Malcolm was building a case and planning to take the US before the world court for human rights violations. He traveled extensively to Africa and Asia to gain support for his plan. Just the notion a Black man had the audacity do attempt such a thing sent chills down the spines of the US government and their puppet masters. It would have been a disaster for the US image.  The US government could not afford to allow Malcolm to continue.

Given what we know of Malcolm and his unwillingness to compromise, tip toe or soft shoe around the critical issues of his day and his willingness to take a principled stand no matter how controversial, we can surmise what he would say about Barack Obama. First of all Malcolm exposed shufflin’ handkerchief head Negroes everywhere he encountered them. He could see their true motives. He knew they were puppets working for a ruthlessly oppressive system. Malcolm opposed imperialist wars. He vocally opposed the Vietnam War early on, even before the war escalated to the point it was all consuming because he saw it for what it was: a racist imperialist projection of white supremacy, the US picking up where the French left off.

Based upon these facts, I have no hesitancy stating Malcolm would be one of the first to denounce Barack Obama as a warmonger and puppet of the multinational corporations, international financiers and the military industrial complex. He would probably be even more vociferous in his criticism because Obama is bi-racial and his father was an African. El Hajj Malik El Shabazz would have discerned Obama was selected by the ruling elites to do their bidding just as he denounced the impotent handkerchief head Negro politicians of his era.

The fact the US under Obama in concert with other European nations is openly waging war in Africa in Somalia and Libya and covertly in Cote d’Ivoire would have incensed Malcolm. Obama’s forays into Pakistan would really make him persona non grata to Malcolm especially since those I mentioned are Muslim countries !

Malcolm  spoke out against the draft and going to war. He said, “We who declare ourselves to be righteous Muslims should not participate in wars which take the lives of humans . As Muslims we don’t go to war, we don’t get drafted, we don’t join anyone’s army. We don’t teach you not to go because they will put us in jail for sedition. I would never tell you not to go, I wouldn’t be that dumb. But I will tell you if you are dumb enough to go that’s on you. If you’re dumb enough to fight for someone who means you no good, if you’re dumb enough to fight for something that you’ve never gotten, if you’re dumb enough like some of your brothers to go to fight in Korea and came back and still caught hell or the older ones who fought in World War II and came back here, came back to this country like Isaac Word who got his eyes put out by the police right here in this country, well go right ahead. But I’m not that dumb. For me and I can only speak for myself I’ll go to jail, I’ll go to prison first.  We do not believe that this nation should force us to take part in such wars for we have nothing to gain from it...”

Malcolm would see the volunteer military and the mercenaries the US is using all around the world and denounce them for what they are: hypocrites, warmongering troublemakers working against the best interests of humanity. When Obama staged the hoax about the killing of the long dead Osama bin-Laden two weeks ago, unthinking Black folks were giddy. Many  fell for the okey-doke saying “Obama’s a bad man, he is The Man.” As astute as Malcolm  was, if he were alive today I’m sure he would have something to say not only about the Osama bin-Laden scam but about 9-11 as well; how the government’s narratives on both of these are as phony as a three dollar bill. Malcolm would chide brainwashed Negroes for being so gullible and silly. He would remind all of us of the atrocities the US government has committed against black and brown people over the years and the lies it regularly tells about everything. In fact Malcolm would be so vocal and persuasive and so on point to seek justice in a world court, the US government would probably kill him.

Gil Scott-Heron, Known As Rap’s Godfather, Dies At 62

Associated Press
5/28/2011

NEW YORK (AP) — Musician Gil Scott-Heron, who helped lay the groundwork for rap by fusing minimalistic percussion, political expression and spoken-word poetry on songs such as “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” but saw his brilliance undermined by a years-long drug addiction, has died at age 62.

A friend, Doris C. Nolan, who answered the telephone listed for his Manhattan recording company, said he died Friday afternoon at St. Luke’s Hospital after becoming sick upon returning from a trip to Europe.

“We’re all sort of shattered,” she said.

Scott-Heron was known for work that reflected the fury of black America in the post-civil rights era and also spoke to the social and political disparities in the country. His songs often had incendiary titles — “Home is Where the Hatred Is” or “Whitey on the Moon” — and through spoken word and song he tapped the frustration of the masses.

Yet much of his life also was defined by his battle with crack cocaine, which led to time in jail. In a 2008 interview with New York magazine, he said he had been living with HIV for years, but he still continued to perform and put out music; his last album, which came out this year, was a collaboration with artist Jamie xx, “We’re Still Here,” a reworking of Scott-Heron’s acclaimed “I’m New Here,” which was released in 2010.

He also was still smoking crack, as detailed in a New Yorker article last year.

“Ten to fifteen minutes of this, I don’t have pain,” he said. “I could have had an operation a few years ago, but there was an 8 percent chance of paralysis. I tried the painkillers, but after a couple of weeks I felt like a piece of furniture. It makes you feel like you don’t want to do anything. This I can quit anytime I’m ready.”

Scott-Heron’s influence on rap was such that he sometimes was referred to as the Godfather of Rap, a title he rejected.

“If there was any individual initiative that I was responsible for it might have been that there was music in certain poems of mine, with complete progression and repeating ‘hooks,’ which made them more like songs than just recitations with percussion,” he wrote in the introduction to his 1990 collection of poems, “Now and Then.”

He referred to his signature mix of percussion, politics and performed poetry as bluesology or Third World music. But then he said it was simply “black music or black American music.”

“Because black Americans are now a tremendously diverse essence of all the places we’ve come from and the music and rhythms we brought with us,” he wrote.

Nevertheless, his influence on generations of rappers has been demonstrated through sampling of his recordings by artists, including Kanye West, who closes out the last track of his latest album with a long excerpt of Scott-Heron’s “Who Will Survive in America.”

Politically outspoken rapper Michael Franti said in a statement Saturday that Scott-Heron’s talent was his ability to “make us think about the world in a different way, laugh hysterically about the ironies of American culture, anger at the hypocrisy of our political system, all to a beat that kept us on the dance floor, with a voice and flow that kept you waiting with anticipation for the next phrase.”

Scott-Heron recorded the song that would make him famous, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” which critiqued mass media, for the album “125th and Lenox” in Harlem in the 1970s. He followed up that recording with more than a dozen albums, initially collaborating with musician Brian Jackson.

Throughout his musical career, he took on political issues of his time, including apartheid in South Africa and nuclear arms. He had been shaped by the politics of the 1960s and black literature, especially the Harlem Renaissance.

Scott-Heron was born in Chicago on April 1, 1949. He was raised in Jackson, Tenn., and in New York before attending college at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.

and honor James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, Michael Schwerner and all Mississippi
Civil Rights Martyrs.

The Memorial Service and Conference will be preceded by a Caravan that will assemble
at 610 38th Avenue at the First Union Missionary Baptist Church in Meridian, Mississippi, at 8:30a.m. on

Courthouse for a Rally to call for Justice in the cases of all Mississippi Civil Rights Martyrs!
The Caravan For Justice will proceed to the Old Longdale Community Center site which was fire bombed
because of its being a meeting place for people of color—African-Americans and Native Americans.

This will be an event for remembering, exchanging thoughts and ideas and for strategizing to continue the
struggle against oppression of people of color in Mississippi.

All the more reasons why folks should stop wasting their time in this poverty matrix and build their own universe...why be a slave all your life???  better yet why be dead inside for the rest of your life??? The Rothschilds started their banking dynasty in the ghetto of Frankfurt, Germany and many of the folks who created "the shitty" service industry opportunities for the working poor in this country think Ray Kroc (McDonald's), Col. Sanders (KFC), Dave Thomas (Wendy's) did not possess college degrees and in some cases did not even graduate from high school...The person who made Goldman Sachs the financial monster it is, Sidney Weinberg aka Mr. Wall Street, only had a middle school education and started there as a janitor's assistant making $3 a week...anything's possible...so make the impossible happen! From The Honorable Sis. Cynthia McKinney: Tehran International Conference On Global Alliance Against Terrorism For A Just Peace

From The Honorable Sis. Cynthia McKinney: Tehran International Conference On Global Alliance Against Terrorism For A Just Peace

The Tehran Peace Conference started on 14 May and ended today, 15 May, (63rd Anniversary of Palestine's Nakbah ) with me chairing the 7:30 am panel entitled, "Terrorism:  Concepts and Contexts."  Members of the Clergy from Brazil, Greece, and the U.S. made presentations as well as international lawyers, academicians, and peace activists from Australia, Canada, Ecuador, Venezuela, Spain, Ghana, and Bolivia.  My assignment is to write up my report of each of the presentations and submit the recommendations from the panel to the Conference Secretariat.

On Day One of the Opening Plenary with journalist Jim Lobe seated on my right and Rabbis Weiss and Rosenberg sitting in front of me, I was surprised when my name was called to make a presentation at the opening plenary of the Tehran Peace Tribune.  I immediately set about writing my remarks and here is what I said:

Cynthia McKinney
International Conference On Global Alliance Against Terrorism For A Just Peace
Tehran, Iran
15 May 2011

How wonderful to be at a Conference where the word "love" is used; we are here because we love humankind.  We are here from all corners of the earth; we are against terrorism; we want peace.

However, we must clarify peace.  What kind of peace do we want?

President John F. Kennedy answered his question by saying:  ". . . not a Pax Americana" imposed on the world by weapons of war.  He went on to say that the kind of peace we want is the kind of peace that makes life worth living--peace for all men and women for all time.

No Justice, No Peace.  No Truth, No Justice!

But, today, U.S. policy is rooted in lies, injustice, and war.  And at home, the people of the U.S. suffer.  Racism is acute, despite and maybe because of President Obama; hatred is rampant with hatred of Muslims, incarceration of Palestinians, targeting of immigrants, the lynchings of Blacks, disappearances of Latinos, and the pauperization of the people.  People inside the U.S. are under attack in the realm of policy:

    poor education opportunities--some communities experience 50% high school dropout rates;
poor health care--Americans pay the most and get less; according to the Central Intelligence Agency World Factbook, the US is 50th in the world in life expectancy and if that is not bad enough, it picks on countries like Iraq (ranked 145th in the world), Pakistan (166th), Gaza (111th), Libya (58th), and Cuba (57th).  In infant mortality, the US is worse than the European Union and Israel.

The U.S. used to be a wealthy country with much to give to the world, but now the country is being plundered and the economic policies now promote the oligarchization of our country.

The country is coming apart a the seams even a sit terrorizes the world and applies the death penalty to whole countries.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said that we are a country of guided missiles and misguided men.  Today, that is still true.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. also said that the U.S. was the greatest purveyor of violence on the planet and sadly, that is still true, too.

But, there is some good news, too.  And that is, despite the tightly controlled U.S. media, despite the deceptive political structure that is not now--if it ever was--democratic, the core American people who are the true peace people, are beginning to see the truth.  We cannot bring our country to peace and respect for human dignity without the solid foundation of the truth.  Those in the service of hatred, war, Zionism are being seen for what they are.

So now, our challenge is what to do with this awakening.  The answer, I believe, is whose revolution gets funded.  I personally know the importance of this.  During the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S., Black people were able to erase bad laws and write better ones.  They didn't have a lot of money, but they had enough.  And what they lacked in finance, they made up for in unity and strategy.  Therefore, it is at this moment, when things appear so bleak that we must redouble our efforts and not give up.  We must believe that we can remake the world in a more peaceful reality.

Finally, I am saddened as an American at what my country is doing to the world.   am saddened that our first African-American President presents a false perception of the Black political consensus in the U.S. when he participate in war crimes and global death and destruction.

These wars constitute a crime against humanity, crimes against the peace, and crimes against our planet.  I believe the people are ready, but now we have to organize ourselves in Revolutionary Love, as Malcolm X said, "by any means necessary."

Thank you all for caring about justice, peace, and human dignity.  Thank you for inviting me to this Conference.  Thank you for having it and thanks, especially to Marzieh (Hashemi) and the Organizing Committee for making sure that I arrived on time!

From The Honorable Sis. Cynthia McKinney: NATO: A Feast Of Blood

From The Honorable Sis. Cynthia McKinney:NATO:  A Feast Of Blood

While serving on the House International Relations Committee from 1993 to 2003, it became clear to me that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was an anachronism.  Founded in 1945 at the end of World War II, NATO was founded by the United States in response to the Soviet Union's survival as a Communist state.  NATO was the U.S. insurance policy that capitalist ownership and domination of European, Asian, and African economies would continue.  This also would ensure the survival of the then-extant global apartheid.

NATO is a collective security pact wherein member states pledge that an attack upon one is an attack against all.  Therefore, should the Soviet Union have attacked any European Member State, the United States military shield would be activated.  The Soviet Response was the Warsaw Pact that maintained a "cordon sanitaire" around the Russian Heartland should NATO ever attack.  Thus, the world was broken into blocs which gave rise to the "Cold War."

Avowed "Cold Warriors" of today still view the world in these terms and, unfortunately, cannot move past Communist China and an amputated Soviet Empire as enemy states of the U.S. whose moves any where on the planet are to be contested.  The collapse of the Soviet Union provided an accelerated opportunity to exert U.S. hegemony in an area of previous Russian influence.  Africa and the Eurasian landmass containing former Soviet satellite states and Afghanistan and Pakistan along with the many other "stans" of the region, have always factored prominently in the theories of "containment" or "rollback" guiding U.S. policy up to today.

With that as background, last night's NATO rocket attack on Tripoli is inexplicable.  A civilian metropolitan area of around 2 million people, Tripoli sustained 22 to 25 bombings last night, rattling and breaking windows and glass and shaking the foundation of my hotel.

I left my room at the Rexis Al Nasr Hotel and walked outside the hotel and I could smell the exploded bombs. There were local people everywhere milling with foreign journalists from around the world. As we stood there more bombs struck around the city. The sky flashed red with explosions and more rockets from NATO jets cut through low cloud before exploding.

I could taste the thick dust stirred up by the exploded bombs. I immediately thought about the depleted uranium munitions reportedly being used here--along with white phosphorus.  If depleted uranium weapons were being used what affect on the local civilians?

Women carrying young children ran out of the hotel. Others ran to wash the dust from their eyes.  With sirens blaring, emergency vehicles made their way to the scene of the attack.  Car alarms, set off by the repeated blasts, could be heard underneath the defiant chants of the people.

Sporadic gunfire broke out and it seemed everywhere around me.  Euronews showed video of nurses and doctors chanting even at the hospitals as they treated those injured from NATO's latest installation of shock and awe.  Suddenly, the streets around my hotel became full of chanting people, car horns blowing, I could not tell how many were walking, how many were driving.  Inside the hotel, one Libyan woman carrying a baby came to me and asked me why are they doing this to us?

Whatever the military objectives of the attack (and I and many others question the military value of these attacks) the fact remains the air attack was launched a major city packed with hundreds of thousands of civilians.

I did wonder too if the any of the politicians who had authorized this air attack had themselves ever been on the receiving end of laser guided depleted uranium munitions. Had they ever seen the awful damage that these weapons do a city and its population? Perhaps if they actually been in the city of air attack and felt the concussion from these bombs and saw the mayhem caused they just might not be so inclined to authorize an attack on a civilian population.

I am confident that NATO would not have been so reckless with human life if they had called on to attack a major western city. Indeed, I am confident that would not be called upon ever to attack a western city. NATO only attacks (as does the US and its allies) the poor and underprivileged of the 3rd world.

Only the day before, at a women's event in Tripoli, one woman came up to me with tears in her eyes:  her mother is in Benghazi and she can't get back to see if her mother is OK or not.  People from the east and west of the country lived with each other, loved each other, intermarried, and now, because of NATO's "humanitarian intervention," artificial divisions are becoming hardened.  NATO's recruitment of allies in eastern Libya smacks of the same strain of cold warriorism that sought to assassinate Fidel Castro and overthrow the Cuban Revolution with "homegrown" Cubans willing to commit acts of terror against their former home country.  More recently, Democratic Republic of Congo has been amputated de facto after Laurent Kabila refused a request from the Clinton Administration to formally shave off the eastern part of his country.  Laurent Kabila personally recounted the meeting at which this request and refusal were delivered.  This plan to balkanize and amputate an African country (as has been done in Sudan) did not work because Kabila said "no" while Congolese around the world organized to protect the "territorial integrity" of their country.

I was horrified to learn that NATO allies (the Rebels) in Libya have reportedly lynched, butchered and then their darker-skinned compatriots after U.S. press reports labeled Black Libyans as "Black mercenaries."  Now, tell me this, pray tell.  How are you going to take Blacks out of Africa?  Press reports have suggested that Americans were "surprised" to see dark-skinned people in Africa.  Now, what does that tell us about them?

The sad fact, however, is that it is the Libyans themselves, who have been insulted, terrorized, lynched, and murdered as a result of the press reports that hyper-sensationalized this base ignorance.  Who will be held accountable for the lives lost in the bloodletting frenzy unleashed as a result of these lies?

Which brings me back to the lady's question:  why is this happening?  Honestly, I could not give her the educated reasoned response that she was looking for.  In my view the international public is struggling to answer "Why?".

What we do know, and what is quite clear, is this:  what I experienced last night is no "humanitarian intervention."

Many suspect it is about all the oil under Libya. Call me skeptical but I have to wonder why the combined armed sea, land and air forces of NATO and the US costing billions of dollars are being arraigned against a relatively small North African country and we're expected to believe its in the defense of democracy.

What I have seen in long lines to get fuel is not "humanitarian intervention."  Refusal to allow purchases of medicine for the hospitals is not "humanitarian intervention."  What is most sad is that I cannot give a cogent explanation of why to people now terrified by NATO's bombs, but it is transparently clear now that NATO has exceeded its mandate, lied about its intentions, is guilty of extra-judicial killings--all in the name of "humanitarian intervention."  Where is the Congress as the President exceeds his war-making authority?  Where is the "Conscience of the Congress?"

For those of who disagree with Dick Cheney's warning to us to prepare for war for the next generation, please support any one who will stop this madness.  Please organize and then vote for peace.  People around the world need us to stand up and speak out for ourselves and them because  Iran and Venezuela are also in the cross-hairs.  Libyans don't need NATO helicopter gunships, smart bombs, cruise missiles, and depleted uranium to settle their differences.  NATO's "humanitarian intervention" needs to be exposed for what it is with the bright, shining light of the truth.

As dusk descends on Tripoli, let me prepare myself with the local civilian population for some more NATO humanitarianism.

Stop bombing Africa and the poor of the world!

Convicted RFK Assassin Says Girl Manipulated Him

By LINDA DEUTSCH, AP Special Correspondent – Thu Apr 28, 6:24 pm ET

LOS ANGELES – Convicted assassin Sirhan Sirhan was manipulated by a seductive girl in a mind control plot to shoot Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, and his bullets did not kill the presidential candidate, lawyers for Sirhan said in new legal papers.

The documents filed this week in federal court and obtained by The Associated Press detail extensive interviews with Sirhan during the past three years, some done while he was under hypnosis.

The papers point to a mysterious girl in a polka-dot dress as the controller who led Sirhan to fire a gun in the pantry of the Ambassador Hotel. But the documents suggest a second person shot and killed Kennedy while using Sirhan as a diversion.

For the first time, Sirhan said under hypnosis that on a cue from the girl he went into "range mode" believing he was at a firing range and seeing circles with targets in front of his eyes.

"I thought that I was at the range more than I was actually shooting at any person, let alone Bobby Kennedy," Sirhan was quoted as saying during interviews with Daniel Brown, a Harvard University professor and expert in trauma memory and hypnosis. He interviewed Sirhan for 60 hours with and without hypnosis, according to the legal brief.

Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney, said prosecutors were unaware of the legal filing and could not comment.

The story of the girl has been a lingering theme in accounts of the events just after midnight on June 5, 1968, when Kennedy was gunned down in the hotel pantry after claiming victory in the California Democratic presidential primary.

Witnesses talked of seeing such a female running from the hotel shouting, "We shot Kennedy." But she was never identified, and amid the chaos of the scene, descriptions were conflicting.

Through the years, Sirhan has claimed no memory of shooting Kennedy and said in the recent interviews that his presence at the hotel was an accident, not a planned destination.

Under hypnosis, he remembered meeting the girl that night and becoming smitten with her. He said she led him to the pantry.

"I am trying to figure out how to hit on her.... That's all that I can think about," he says in one interview cited in the documents. "I was fascinated with her looks .... She never said much. It was very erotic. I was consumed by her. She was a seductress with an unspoken unavailability."

Brown was hired by Sirhan's lawyer William F. Pepper.

Pepper's associate, attorney Laurie Dusek, attended the interviews. and Brown said in the documents they both took verbatim notes because prison officials would not let them tape record nearly all the sessions.

Sirhan maintained in the hypnotic interviews that the mystery girl touched him or "pinched" him on the shoulder just before he fired then spun him around to see people coming through the pantry door.

"Then I was on the target range ... a flashback to the shooting range ... I didn't know that I had a gun," Sirhan said.

Under what Brown called the condition of hypnotic free recall, he said Sirhan remembered seeing the flash of a second gun at the time of the assassination. Without hypnosis, he said, Sirhan could not remember that shot.

Pepper, a New York lawyer with an international practice, previously tried to prove that James Earl Ray was not the assassin of Martin Luther King Jr.

The lawyer said he is convinced that Sirhan was a victim of a mind control project such as those used by the CIA in the 1960s. He is seeking an evidentiary hearing to exonerate Sirhan in Kennedy's killing.

Dusek said in an interview that Sirhan was hypnotized for perhaps 30 percent of the interviews, most of which had to be done through a glass partition with Brown talking to him on a phone.

Only when Sirhan was moved from the state prison at Corcoran to his current location at Pleasant Valley State Prison in Coalinga were they allowed face-to-face visits, she said, and a few of those were recorded.

Other portions of the motion allege suppression of ballistics evidence and the autopsy report, and claim ineffective assistance of counsel. It contends previous lawyers for Sirhan accepted from the start that he was the lone shooter, settled on a defense of diminished capacity and did not seek other avenues of defense.

During the trial, Sirhan tried to confess to killing Kennedy "with 20 years of malice aforethought," but the judge rejected the blurted statement.

A large portion of the new documents seek to prove the bullets that hit Kennedy came from a different direction than the spot where Sirhan was standing. The papers do not name any other possible shooter.

Sirhan was denied parole in March by a panel that said he had not shown sufficient remorse for the killing.
