My Thoughts Concerning Barack Obama, The Presidential Election, And Leadership In Particular Black Leadership

Barack Obama thinks too much like a politician in order to be a true visionary...
True visionaries possess boldness and daring and are not afraid of taking chances or speaking their minds in spite of popular opinion...Barack is calculating and his people skills seem to be forced and disingenuous at times but that doesn't make him insincere like his smile seems to suggest, but just human...The fact that he distances himself from the minister who basically gave him the book title for his latest best selling book and who is also his spiritual adviser shows that Barack is an opportunist no more and no less than other Presidential candidates on the scene today...

I think what is misleading about presidential elections is the fact that people invest too much money and attention to them...If you really want to effect change you must start through grassroots and community organizing...Their is a reason why they say that all politics are local...The people you need to worry about are those closest to you...Who sits on your school board and city council??? Who are the ones that are making the decisions at the state level??? Who represents your district in the U.S. Congress??? I think getting stressed out by who sits in the White House is ineffective because Barack Obama and any other mainstream candidate are not sponsored by the people but by corporate interests...In other words who writes the paychecks controls the string attached to the carrot...

Also there are alot of people running for President besides Democrats and Republicans...Just because you don't see them on Fox News, C-Span, MSNBC and CNN doesn't mean they don't exist...Just because you don't read about them in the New York Times and/or Washington Post doesn't mean they don't exist...This is not, in spite of popular opinion, a two party system by any means...Think outside the box that the powers that be want you to stay in...Free your mind to the possibilities...Imagine Like John Lennon...Dream Like Martin Luther King...Ask Why Not Like Bobby Kennedy...

In spite of its positive potential and appeal, I would argue that this is a bad time for any person of color or woman to be President...The reason why I say this is the fact that whoever is President will have the Iraq War as a part of their legacy...They will also be judged by their actions or lack of action towards the Sudan Darfur Crisis among other pressing issues...This is truly a Jackie Robinson/color line moment...For better or worse you are normally blamed for what your predecessor did before you and ironically the things that you do get right, your predecessor will get the credit...WTF???



The Greatest Black Person We Ever Sent To Congress Was Adam Clayton Powell Jr....He Is To Black Politicians What Dr. W.E.B. DuBois Is To Black Scholars...He's The Measuring Stick...Not Only Was He A Community Oriented Minister (As A Matter Of Fact Barack Obama's Minister's Church Is Modeled, Whether Intentional Or Not, After Rev. Adam Clayton Powell Jr's Harlem Abyssinian Church Community Service Methodology) But He Was Also Very Progressive And A True Servant Of The People While On The Hill...He Was A Mentor To Malcolm X As Well As To Dr. Martin Luther King Jr....He Got The NEA or National Endowment of The Arts Started...He Helped To Desegregate Washington D.C. By Finding Black People Off The Street To Dine With Him In Some Of The Best Restaurants In The Beltway And He Secured Legislation For Affirmative Action (Not Richard Nixon)...He Questioned The Racial Profiling Of Blacks By Law Enforcement Officials In His Beloved Harlem Community As Well As Everywhere In The U.S...He Received Many Death Threats From The Mafia (On The Floor And For The Congressional Record He Read Out The Names, Addresses, And Phone Numbers Of Some Of The Most Powerful Gangsters In The U.S. Who Were Exploiting Black Folks In New York City Through Their Control Of The Numbers Racket And Drug Game)...He Created Vital Relationships With Latin America And African Countries...He Was Also The True Author Of "The Great Society" (Not Lyndon B. Johnson) Program Where He Helped Pass Legislation, Raised Attention As Well As Funds For The Poor And Disadvantaged In America...Yes Personally He Was Flawed (Which Led To His Eventual Downfall At The Hands Of Eager Enemies On Both Sides Of The Aisle) But At The Same Time He Used His Gifts To Not Only Better Himself, But Also Those Around Him...Now Charlie Rangel Occupies His Seat...Can You Think Of Anybody In The Black Congressional Caucus That Equals Or Comes Close To Mr. Adam Clayton Powell Jr.'s Commitment And Legacy???

And I Say All This To Say That Just Because Barack Obama Just So Happens To Be A Black Politician Doesn't Mean He Is A Black Leader....
