Obama Focuses On Turning Red States Blue...

Colorado Springs, Colorado - It will be a red-state Fourth of July for Barack Obama, who hopes to find votes as well as fireworks in places that blue-state Democrats often bypass in presidential elections.

During the long holiday weekend, Obama is making an All-American swing from picnics to parades in reliably Republican corners of the country, states such as North Dakota and Montana. Both have voted Republican for the White House by hefty margins for almost four decades. Neither state offers many electoral votes - three apiece - but appearances there give Obama the opportunity to argue that he can appeal to voters of all stripes.

"It may have been Woody Allen who said 90 percent of success is showing up," Obama told a small but enthusiastic crowd of donors at a fundraiser here. "If I didn't show up, I wouldn't get many votes around here. If I did show up, I might get something going."

Colorado, where Obama spent Wednesday, has unexpectedly tipped from a GOP stronghold into the battleground column this year. Ohio and Missouri, which went Republican in 2004, got Obama visits this week. A second trip to Missouri is scheduled for Saturday, another swing state.

Democrats have made gains in recent gubernatorial and congressional races in the states. Montana's governor and two U.S. senators are Democrats. North Dakota's governor is a Republican but the state's two senators are Democrats.

Obama noted this sort of evolution in parts of the West - particularly Colorado - to his supporters Wednesday night, saying that it had been a chief topic of his phone conversation with former President Clinton earlier this week. Clinton told him that he doubted he would have won Colorado in 1992 had independent candidate H. Ross Perot not been in the race and drawn a sizable percentage of voters, mostly away from Republican President George H.W. Bush.

"You've seen a seismic shift in attitudes here," Obama said.

As a result, the campaign is making a serious play for red states like Montana and North Dakota, building up an extensive ground operation, buying television time and sending the candidate in for a visit.

Obama's first two ads of the general election race are running in 18 states - seven of which have gone Republican in the last several elections, including Montana and North Dakota. His visits this week aren't his first to either state, either. Obama has been to North Dakota once and Montana three times, with more expected.

At a Fargo, N.D., children's museum on Thursday, Obama planned to hold a town-hall meeting with veterans to focus on patriotism, service to country and treatment of veterans.

Recalling his grandfather's enlistment after the Pearl Harbor attack, Obama said in prepared remarks, "When our troops go into battle, they serve no faction or party; they represent no race or region. They are simply Americans. They serve and fight and bleed together out of loyalty not just to a place on a map or a certain kind of people, but to a set of ideals that we have been striving for since the first shots rang out at Lexington and Concord."

For Friday's Independence Day holiday, a important symbol for Americans and politicians, the campaign chose Butte, Mont.

Obama is attending a Fourth of July parade and picnic there with his wife, Michelle, and their two daughters. Friday is his older daughter Malia's 10th birthday, so a private celebration also is planned in the town.

"The people of North Dakota and Montana are independent-minded voters," said Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki. "We think we can not only compete, but we can win."

While Obama was tromping around on GOP turf, his Republican rival John McCain was nowhere near his base of support. McCain spent part of the week overseas, in Colombia and Mexico. He had no plans to campaign on the Fourth of July or all weekend, spending time at his home in Arizona instead.

The Obama camp sees Obama's huge-margin primary wins over former Democratic rival Hilllary Rodham Clinton in Montana and North Dakota - he drew more than 100,000 votes in Montana - as a starting advantage.

If nothing else, forcing McCain to compete for those states' electoral votes could be enough to alter the outcome this fall. Obama is able to spend as much as the record-shattering fundraiser can raise, while McCain is limited by public campaign financing to $85 million.

Still, for all the happy talk about turning these and other red states blue, it will be a very difficult battle for Obama.

Montana voted for President Bush over Al Gore by a 25 percentage-point margin in 2000 and 21 percentage points in 2004. North Dakota is even tougher, having gone for Bush by more than 27 points in both 2000 and 2004.

In Montana, the three top Democrats waited until after the state's primary on June 3 to endorse Obama, a sign they didn't want to be his most aggressive and out-front supporters in the conservative state. Gov. Brian Schweitzer has said Obama could be a tough sell for pro-gun Westerners in the state with the highest concentration of gun owners.

He did have one bit of good news for the Obama team: the perception that McCain is soft on the issue.

In North Dakota, the last Democratic candidate to carry the state was Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964. Only two other Democrats, Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, have won the state since 1900.

"Barack Obama is wrong for North Dakota. His values are wrong," Robert M. "Mike" Duncan, chairman of the Republican National Committee, said in a conference call with reporters. "He's turned out to be an old-fashioned politician."

Even Obama alluded to his difficulties at the fundraiser, and pleaded for help.

"I'm going to have to be a better candidate," he said. "You are going to have to make sure that over the next four months that outside of your family and your work, this is your project."

Jesse Helms a.k.a. "Senator No" No More...

Jesse Helms: A Polarizer, Not A Compromiser

"Compromise, hell!" Jesse Helms screamed in a 1959 editorial that captured what would become the legacy of his Senate career and his place in the conservative movement.

Jesse Helms mostly was a polarizer, not a compromiser. He would rather win elections by a razor's edge than change his conservative positions.

Many of his colleagues in the congenial Senate "club" sought compromises on the toughest social issues. Jesse Helms wouldn't play along. He relished his nickname as "Senator No," the man who knew the Senate rules so well that he blocked legislation that violated his right-wing principles and nominees he couldn't stomach.

He was often gentlemanly, though. But not negotiable.

With a big smile, he proudly held up a "Senator No" T-shirt for the cameras.

No to civil rights. No to abortion. No to communism. No to the United Nations. No to gay rights. No to arts funding with nakedness. No to school busing. No to the U.S. giving up the Panama Canal. No to a nuclear arms reduction treaty called Salt II.

This was a man who clearly wasn't into political triangulation.

Oddly, Helms, who died on the Fourth of July at age 86, did make a few changes that moderated his image at the end of his 30-year Senate career — but they seem now more like footnotes to the Helms best known as a latter-20th century magnet for attack by liberals.

Helms' "compromise, hell!" stance is emblematic of an era that will be judged as harshly partisan. He helped pave way to the polarization that plagues the country — and both parties — to this day.

The man who spent his life fighting the left and decrying homosexuality told Christian activists in his last year in the Senate that he'd joined the fight against the worldwide AIDS epidemic. And a friendship bloomed with Clinton administration Secretary of State Madeleine Albright when he was chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

This didn't necessarily mean that the brittle North Carolinian had mellowed. It just made the man whose path always turned right a little more complex, not so easy to read.

"He was one of the most conservative senators but he wasn't the leader of conservatives in the Senate. He was a leader of conservatives outside the Senate," said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics. But Sabato said Helms' positions would be a major problem today for a GOP that is perceived by many as moving too far to the right.

There's no better indication of Helms' unwillingness to compromise than his willingness to lose elections. His winning percentages in his five Senate terms — from 1972 to 1996 — were 54, 55, 52, 53 and 52. Sabato said Helms may well have lost if he had run again in 2002.

A contemporary in the Senate, Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, preceded Helms as the standard-bearer for civil rights opponents. But when Thurmond was threatened with political extinction — winning only 56 percent of the vote in 1978 — he began moderating his views and won 67 and 64 percent of the vote in the next two elections.

Helms "was happily willing to lose," Sabato said. "He was willing to lose gloriously rather than abandon his views and principles."

As a television commentator before running for the Senate, Helms said, "Dr. (Martin Luther) King's outfit ... is heavily laden at the top with leaders of proven records of communism, socialism and sex perversion, as well as other curious behavior." He called the Civil Rights Act of 1964 "the single most dangerous piece of legislation ever introduced in the Congress."

"Senator Helms certainly was no bigot," Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said Friday. "He was a man however not into subtlety. You know what he thought about a particular issue. You certainly knew because he was not into the kind of nuance and subtlety that so often divides American politicians."

Helms' greatest political feat was not in the Senate, but in Republican politics. In 1976, he supported Ronald Reagan in the North Carolina primary — not only rescuing Reagan's political career but positioning Reagan for his successful run four years later.

Still, some of his antics in the Senate were legendary.

He alone stopped the nomination of a Republican, then-Massachusetts Gov. William Weld, as ambassador to Mexico because Weld supported medical use of marijuana, abortion rights and gay rights.

In the debate over reauthorizing a domestic AIDS program, Helms tried but failed to prohibit any money from being used to promote homosexuality.

He repeatedly tried to kill the National Endowment for the Arts, but didn't succeed. He believed the agency funded pornography.

In blocking renewal of a health care program for AIDS victims in 1995, Helms railed that the disease was the result of "deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct."

In his 2005 World AIDS Day Appeal, though, Helms wrote, "Each of us, all of our churches, must do something. We dare not avert our eyes. In the name of Christ, for the sake of his kingdom, please help."

What Are America's African Americans Celebrating July 4th?

The Fourth of July is upon us and with it will come cookouts, fireworks and the spending of money that will make business owners very happy. Think Wal-Mart, Home Depot, grocery stores and gas stations aren't ecstatic about the cash that will be blown so millions around the country can eat, drink and be merry?
The day is supposed to be about America declaring its independence from the British in 1776. But that celebration is clearly overshadowed by the red, white and blue commercialism that has taken over. It's blinded most into believing what's on the grill is the most important part of the day.

Such misguided behavior is prevalent across racial lines. But just because millions do it doesn't make it right. As an African American, my biggest question is: What is it exactly that I'm celebrating? The Declaration of Independence signed on July 4, 1776, stated in part that "All men are created equal." It says they are endowed by their creator with certain "unalienable rights." Among these rights are "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." However, slaves weren't officially freed until the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. The Declaration did nothing to improve the lives of slaves.

Did slaves slip their minds?

Nowhere in the Declaration is there anything outlawing the sale of slaves. It must have slipped their minds, even though several of the signers were slave owners and their slaves were probably milling about as the men discussed and signed the document. In other words, the well-being and release of slaves was not what America had in mind when it was declaring freedom on July 4th. Yet every year, African Americans join others in shelling out millions of dollars to participate in a celebration that was never intended for them.

Ouch!In a speech to an antislavery society in 1852, the fugitive slave Frederick Douglass said, "I say it with a sad sense of the disparity between us. I am not included within the pale of this glorious anniversary! Your high independence only reveals the immeasurable distance between us. The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice, are not enjoyed in common. The rich inheritance of justice, liberty, prosperity and independence, bequeathed by your fathers, is shared by you, not by me. The sunlight that brought life and healing to you, has brought stripes and death to me. This Fourth [of] July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn."

We don't count

These are biting words that still ring true today if we as a society are honest with ourselves. When America declared its independence from the stronghold of Britain, it was the ultimate act of bravery and freedom. The country would no longer be oppressed and enslaved to the British ways and could and would stand on her own. That is a powerful statement under any circumstances and one that African Americans have failed to make.

We continue to celebrate a holiday in which an entire race of people and the inhumane conditions they endured were overlooked and ignored. This is not to demean the historical significance of the Constitution, signed in 1787, because it was a great event for white America, but it did little for slaves.

George Washington, the country's first president, was a slave owner who refused to allow slaves in the army during the Revolutionary War until the British started enlisting them. Fifty-six white men, slave owners among them -- including its writer and our third president, Thomas Jefferson -- signed a document on the Fourth of July that gave unlimited freedom to white folks and in essence prolonged government-sanctioned slavery for another 89 years. And to this we eat ribs and potato salad and dance and revel when the biggest winners are merchants? The constant losers have been the African Americans who are unaware of what the holiday really stands for.

If freedom had been achieved, then discrimination in housing, education and voting rights would not be a big issue. If independence had been achieved, then a man would not be shot by the police while reaching for his wallet. If African Americans had the rights that this day should afford, then the jails would not be running over with black males.

Freedom is about more than being able to sit at a nice restaurant. Freedom is about being able to purchase land and build your own restaurant and establish your own rules of service. It's about having something to celebrate on the Fourth of July, because what the history books tell you to celebrate doesn't include your ancestors.

So how could it include you?

NPR.org, July 1, 2008 · The FBI and Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a 19-year-old man accused of running down and killing a Prince George's County police officer. He died while in police custody Sunday, a little more than a day after he was charged with the killing.

The Maryland medical examiner ruled Monday that the inmate, Ronnie White, died from strangulation. Two small bones in his neck were broken. The FBI, which investigates prison deaths as a matter of course, said it is focused on possible civil rights violations.

White had been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Cpl. Richard S. Findley. Findley had been leading an investigation into a car theft ring when he pulled over a motorist in rural Maryland. As he was climbing out of his police cruiser, he was struck by a pickup. Police said they believed the truck was stolen and that White was the man at the wheel.

They arrested White and three other men hours later at a nearby apartment complex where the pickup was parked. Findley had been rushed to a nearby hospital. He died a short time later from complications related to massive head trauma.

White was taken to the county's Correctional Center in Upper Marlboro and placed in a maximum security cell. Officials say he had passed a medical and psychological evaluation before he entered the facility early Saturday, and guards were checking on him every half-hour. At 10:15 a.m. Sunday, he was seen sitting on his bunk and seemed fine, guards said. Fifteen minutes later, he was dead.

Normally, White would have been moved to a jail outside Prince George's County because his alleged crime involved county law enforcement officers. But because White was arrested late on a weekend night, the county didn't follow that protocol. Seven guards had access to White, as did numerous supervisors. Officials are still trying to determine whether anyone outside the prison had access to White.

She was in a Charlotte, N.C. jail, charged with possession with intent to distribute heroin and possession of a needle and syringe. Her mother, unable to bring Patrice's two-year-old daughter Andrea inside to visit her, directed Patrice to look out the window when she returned to her cell. Staring out a narrow opening, Gaines saw her grandfather in front of the jail holding her daughter while her mother pointed to the third floor window. Her daughter looked all about."She is searching for me and she can't find me," Gaines thought, as tears trickled down her cheeks. In that moment, she vowed to do all she could to change her life.Thus began a long and arduous journey, which Gaines chronicles in her autobiography, "Laughing In The Dark: From Colored Girl to Woman of Color— A Journey from Prison to Power." </span></div><div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><p></p></div><div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><p> <span style="color:#663366;">Gaines outlined her path to change in her inspirational book, "Moments of Grace, Meeting the Challenge to Change." </p><p></span><span style="color:#663366;"> She has been a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show and was featured on a segment of Dateline. Her articles have appeared in numerous publications, including Essence Magazine. She has been a commentator on National Public Radio and Pacifica Radio. Today, Gaines is a freelance journalist, writing teacher and motivational speaker, telling her story at colleges, conferences, prisons and drug rehabilitation programs around the country. She is a restorative justice trainer and a "justice reform activist," who encourages discussions on forgiveness in her lectures and coaxes people to redefine "justice." Her goal is to drastically change the U.S. judicial system and prison industry. </p><p> Gaines is also devoted to working to empower women, especially those who have been incarcerated. To that end, she and longtime friend Gaile Dry-Burton plan to open The Brown Angel Retreat Center in the Charlotte, N.C. area.
