Obama in Turban Pic Causes Stir And Points To Clinton Campaign...

Tha Artivist Writes: Hillary Clinton Thought That Ralph Nader's 2008 Bid For The White House was a "Passing Fancy"...She further stated that "Obviously, it's not helpful to whomever our Democratic nominee is. But it's a free country,"...I think that if it is true that members of her campaign are leading a smear campaign against Barack using the above photo, she will be the one responsible and not Nader for hurting the Democratic Presidential Nominee...And judging by her antics she knows she won't be the nominee...Holy Superdelegates Batman!!!!

Obama Photo In Turban, Robe Causes Stir

By JIM KUHNHENN, Associated Press

A photograph circulating on the Internet of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama dressed in traditional local garments during a visit to Kenya in 2006 is causing a dustup in the presidential campaign over what constitutes a smear.

The Associated Press photograph portrays Obama wearing a white turban and a wraparound white robe presented to him by elders in Wajir, in northeastern Kenya. Obama's estranged late father was Kenyan and Obama visited the country in 2006, attracting thousands of well-wishers.

The gossip and news Web site The Drudge Report posted the photograph Monday and said it was being circulated by "Clinton staffers" and quoted an e-mail from an unidentified campaign aide. Drudge did not include proof of the e-mail in the report.

"I just want to make it very clear that we were not aware of it, the campaign didn't sanction it and don't know anything about it," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said in a teleconference with reporters. "None of us have seen the e-mail in question. If anybody has independent reporting that they've done on it I would welcome it."

Obama, in an interview with WOAI radio in San Antonio, Texas, said voters are "saddened when they see these kind of politics."

"Everybody knows that whether it's me or Senator Clinton or Bill Clinton that when you travel to other countries they ask you to try on traditional garb that you have been given as a gift," he said. "The notion that the Clinton campaign would be trying to circulate this as a negative on the same day that Senator Clinton was giving a speech about how we repair our relationships around the world is sad."

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe accused Clinton's campaign of "the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we've seen from either party in this election."

Clinton campaign manager Maggie Williams said the Obama campaign's reaction was inflaming passions and distracting voters.

"Enough," Williams said in a statement. "If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed. Hillary Clinton has worn the traditional clothing of countries she has visited and had those photos published widely.

"This is nothing more than an obvious and transparent attempt to distract from the serious issues confronting our country today and to attempt to create the very divisions they claim to decry."

In a teleconference with reporters, retired Air Force Gen. Scott Gration, an Obama adviser who accompanied the Illinois senator to Kenya two years ago, said the senator was there to learn how tribes were organizing themselves.

"And in the course of this, Senator Obama was given an outfit and as the guest that he was, the great guest, he took this outfit and they encouraged him to try some of it on," Gration said. "It was a thing that we all do."

In December, two Clinton Iowa volunteers resigned after forwarding a hoax e-mail that falsely said Obama is a Muslim possibly intent on destroying the United States. Obama is a member of the United Church of Christ and says he has never been a Muslim, but false rumors about Islamic ties are circulating on the Internet.

Will A Mega Hurricane Hit The U.S. Soon???

Is There A $500 Billion Hurricane On The Horizon?

MIAMI - A hurricane that hit Miami in 1926 would cause up to $157 billion in damage if it were to strike today, according to a study published this week.

US storm costs are rising because of higher populations and wealth on the coasts, not a spike in the number or power of hurricanes, the study said.

Its conclusions run counter to the notion that the $150 billion in damages caused by the destructive Atlantic hurricane seasons of 2004 and 2005 might be linked to global warming, which some scientists believe is behind a spate of extraordinarily powerful hurricanes in recent years.

An extrapolation of current trends "suggests a storm like the 1926 Great Miami Hurricane could result in perhaps $500 billion in damage as soon as the 2020s," the study said.

Hurricanes and their destructive potential have become a key concern in global energy, insurance and commodities markets in the last decade. Scientists believe the Atlantic basin entered a new era of more frequent hurricanes around 1995, which could last 25 to 40 years.

The study found that the 1926 Miami hurricane would have caused the largest losses in history -- $140 billion to $157 billion -- if it struck today, accounting for inflation and massive building along the Miami coastline in the last 80 years.

That toll would have far exceeded the current costliest hurricane, Katrina, which killed 1,500 people when it swamped New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico coast in 2005, causing $81 billion in damage.

"There is nothing in the US hurricane damage record that indicates global warming has caused a significant increase in destruction along our coasts," Chris Landsea, one of the study's authors and a leading skeptic on the influence global warming may have on hurricanes, said in a statement.

The study looked at mainland US hurricane damage from 1900 to 2005 and found that there was no trend of increasing damage. On average, hurricanes have caused about $10 billion damage yearly in the United States for the last 106 years.

About 85 percent of the damage is caused by what scientists call "major" hurricanes, Category 3, 4 or 5 on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensity, which feature sustained winds above 110 mph (177 kph). Only 24 percent of cyclones that hit the United States are major ones.

The study estimated that because of inflation and coastal construction, the damage caused by the 1926 Miami hurricane would have measured $72 billion in 1995 and then jumped to as much as $157 billion just 10 years later.

Some risk analysts estimated damage tolls could be expected to double roughly every 10 years because of the increasing numbers of buildings, construction costs, and other factors.

"Unless action is taken to address the growing concentration of people and property in coastal hurricane areas, the damage will increase by a great deal as more people and infrastructure inhabit these coastal areas," said Landsea, a researcher with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The study was published in Natural Hazards Review, a publication aimed at civil engineers.

Is Clarence Thomas The Strong Silent Type???

Thomas: No Questions In 2 Years

By MARK SHERMAN, Associated Press

Two years and 144 cases have passed since Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas last spoke up at oral arguments. It is a period of unbroken silence that contrasts with the rest of the court's unceasing inquiries.

Hardly a case goes by, including two appeals that were argued Monday, without eight justices peppering lawyers with questions. Oral arguments offer justices the chance to resolve nagging doubts about a case, probe its weaknesses or make a point to their colleagues.

Left, right and center, the justices ask and they ask and they ask. Sometimes they debate each other, leaving the lawyer at the podium helpless to jump in. "I think you're handling these questions very well," Chief Justice John Roberts quipped to a lawyer recently in the midst of one such exchange.

Leaning back in his leather chair, often looking up at the ceiling, Thomas takes it all in, but he never joins in.

Monday was no different. Thomas said nothing.

He occasionally leans to his right to share a comment or a laugh with Justice Stephen Breyer. Less often, he talks to Justice Anthony Kennedy, to his immediate left.

Thomas, characteristically, declined to comment for this article. But in the course of his publicity tour for his autobiography, "My Grandfather's Son," the 59-year-old justice discussed his reticence on the bench on several occasions.

The questions may be helpful to the others, Thomas said, but not to him.

"One thing I've demonstrated often in 16 years is you can do this job without asking a single question," he told an adoring crowd at the Federalist Society, a conservative legal group.

The book tour showed that the topic comes up even among friendly audiences.

Indeed, Thomas' comment was provoked by this question: Why do your colleagues ask so many questions?

His response: "I did not plant that question. That's a fine question. When you figure out the answer, you let me know," he said.

The typical hourlong argument session can sometimes be difficult, even for a practiced questioner.

"I really would like to hear what those reasons are without interruption from all of my colleagues," Justice John Paul Stevens said at an argument in the fall.

The newest justice, Samuel Alito, has said he initially found it hard to get a question in sometimes amid all the former law professors on the court.

The last time Thomas asked a question in court was Feb. 22, 2006, in a death penalty case out of South Carolina. A unanimous court eventually broadened the ability of death-penalty defendants to blame someone else for the crime.

In the past, the Georgia-born Thomas has chalked up his silence to his struggle as a teenager to master standard English after having grown up speaking Geechee, a kind of dialect that thrived among former slaves on the islands off the South Carolina, Georgia and Florida coasts.

He also has said he will ask a pertinent question if his colleagues don't but sees no need to engage in the back-and-forth just to hear his own voice.

Lately, he has focused on the latter reason.

"If I think a question will help me decide a case, then I'll ask that question," he told C-SPAN's Brian Lamb in October. "Otherwise, it's not worth asking because it detracts from my job."

He talked in that same interview about descriptions of him as the silent justice.

"I can't really say that it's unfair to say that I'm silent in that context. I would like to, though, be referred to as the 'listening justice,' you know," Thomas said. "I still believe that, if somebody else is talking, somebody should be listening."

The following month, however, at an event sponsored by Hillsdale College in Michigan, Thomas was more combative when asked about oral arguments.

Suppose surgeons started discussing the merits of removing a gallbladder while in the operating room, Thomas said, as quoted by U.S. News & World Report. "You really didn't go in there to have a debate about gallbladder surgery," he said. Similarly, "we are there to decide cases, not to engage in seminar discussions."

Nader Is In...Will Change Be Delayed???

Tha Artivist Writes:

I saw his interview on Meet the Press yesterday...I am glad he is running...Everything he said is on point...My only question is will people have the political will to vote for him???

People I feel for the most part are followers...And many of us are afraid of our own shadows...This country is run by the military industry complex...The same issues that Bro. Nader is talking about are the same ones that got Dr. King killed 40 years ago...

Nevertheless Can You Feel The Change In The Air???

Civil Rights Icon & Dear Friend Of Rosa Parks, Johnnie Carr Joins The Ancestors...

Artivist Writes: I fondly remember the late great Mrs. Carr at her childhood friend and comrade Rosa Parks' Memorial Service in Detroit in 2005...She said something that stuck with me till this day...She wanted to verify that her good friend wasn't no reactionary, but that she was a certified revolutionary...She related to the audience that her and Sis. Rosa got a solid education...They were educated by white nuns from up north who taught them the importance of critical thinking, the ability to analyze information and to draw your own conclusion a.k.a. to think for yourself...That point right there stresses the importance of a solid educational foundation...Think of how many revolutionaries we have lost to the prison industry complex institution as well as to a poor public education system...Many high school dropouts especially in the Black communities are functional illiterates meaning that haven't learn to read or write and are the hidden statistics of a failed society...Think about it, some of the Civil Rights Movement's greatest icons and organizers were college educated or had a passion for education...It is up to us all to instill the pride of learning once and for all in our children...Change that we want is right before our eyes if we pay attention to them...Fredrick Douglass once said it is easier to raise strong children than it is to repair broken men...Let's choose the former so we don't have to worry about cleaning up after the latter...

Civil Rights Icon Johnnie Carr, 97, Dies

Longtime civil right activist Johnnie Carr listens to comments about Rosa Parks and the 50th Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott during a news conference in this Dec. 1, 2005 file photo, in Montgomery, Ala. Carr, 97, died Friday might, Feb. 22, 2008, according to a Baptist Health hospital spokesman in Montgomery.

By DESIREE HUNTER, Associated Press

Johnnie Carr, who joined childhood friend Rosa Parks in the historic Montgomery bus boycott and kept a busy schedule of civil rights activism up to her final days, has died. She was 97.

Carr died Friday night, said Baptist Health hospital spokeswoman Melody Ragland. She had been hospitalized after a stroke Feb. 11.

Carr succeeded the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. as president of the Montgomery Improvement Association in 1967, a post she held at her death. It was the newly formed association that led the boycott of city buses in the Alabama capital in 1955 after Parks, a black seamstress, was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to whites on a crowded bus.

A year later the U.S. Supreme Court struck down racial segregation on public transportation.

"Johnnie Carr is one of the three major icons of the Civil Rights Movement: Dr. King, Rosa Parks and Johnnie Carr," said Morris Dees, co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center. "I think ultimately, when the final history books are written, she'll be one of the few people remembered for that terrific movement."

As the Improvement Association's president, Carr helped lead several initiatives to improve race relations and conditions for blacks. She was involved in a lawsuit to desegregate Montgomery schools, with her then-13-year-old son, Arlam, the named plaintiff.

"She hadn't been sick up until she had the stroke," Arlam Carr said Saturday. "It was such a massive stroke that she never was able to recover from it. She was still very active — going around and speaking — but it was just one of those things."

She played a prominent role in 2005 on the 50th anniversary of Parks' refusal to give up her bus seat, speaking to thousands of schoolchildren who marched to the Capitol.

"Look back, but march forward," Carr urged the huge crowd of young people.

She also traveled to memorial services in Washington, where her eulogy of Parks was "really the most dynamic" moment, recalled Julian Bond, chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

"There were many people who spoke who were much better known ... but she carried the day," said Bond, who helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.

Just days before her stroke, Carr participated in King Day ceremonies in Montgomery, speaking after a parade. Admirers marveled at her energy and commitment into her 90s.

"She was always an encourager and not a divider," Mayor Bobby Bright told the Montgomery Advertiser. "She was just a loving person. She was truly the mother figure that we all so desperately needed in Montgomery during a very trying period of our history."

In a statement, Gov. Bob Riley said Carr was a "remarkable woman and will be deeply missed."

She was a true inspiration, Riley said, and "leaves behind a lasting legacy of pride, determination, and perseverance."

The family said funeral arrangements would be announced later.

Arlam Carr said that his mother's 97th birthday was last month, but that the only place her age showed was on paper.

"She was still driving her own car. How many 97-year-olds are still driving and you feel comfortable with their driving?" he said. "She has lived a very active life. If there's one thing about it, we all know we're going to leave here one day and this was just the time the Lord wanted her to 'come on'."

Dees said he, too, was impressed with Carr's vigor and amazed that "she never showed the strain of age. Her voice was strong and her spirit was always cheerful."

"One of the things I respect her for is she did not have the rancor and anger that so many local African-Americans of the civil rights movement had," he said. "She was very willing to build bridges. Montgomery's always been very divisive, and she showed an example of reaching across racial lines."

In recent decades, civil rights landmarks, including the site where Parks was arrested, have become historic points of interest for tourists.

"When we first started, we weren't thinking about history," Carr told The Associated Press in an interview in 2003. "We were thinking about the conditions and the discrimination."

Bond called Carr a "spark plug" and "one of the remaining links we had to the Montgomery bus boycott."

"She was remarkable to have had such a long career and to have held concern for justice in the forefront for all this time," he said. "It's a great tragedy that she's gone, and those of us who knew her are blessed to have that experience."

Education Visionary Writes: Scholarship Deadlines Approaching...Apply Now!!!

Guys, I need your help in ensuring that we get the message out to our students and parents that they must apply for scholarships, fellowships, internships and summer programs. We have the power to make a difference in the distribution process, but we must come together and help one another and retreat back to "I am my brother's keeper approach". In the end, we grow when our legacies or children grow. It is also important that we create workshops for students/parents to help them utilize the internet and understand how blogs work. This would make a big impact, because knowledge is power, if used properly.

In the end my vision is not your vision, but when it manifests it can be used by all whom want it.

Two of my special poems are: The Man Who Thinks He Can and Our Deepest Fear. Both poems are inspiring and allow you to challenge yourself and not be afraid to shine because of what others may think.

Dear Senator Clinton, PLEASE STEP DOWN
http://clintonsupporters4obama.blogspot.com/2008/02/dear-senator-hillary-clinton-please.html

Artivist Writes:
I definitely agreed that Hillary should step aside eventually...Not now...I also have my own concrete reasons for believing why she should...But at this time Obama needs all of the things that Hillary can throw at him because the Republicans are just waiting at the chance to smear Obama or the junior Senator from Illinois with all they got...

We all must remember that this election is definitely the Democrats to lose...With that said the Republicans have nothing to fear, they don't have to hold back punches...

I feel the letter, but at the same time people must realize that Hillary has been preparing for this moment for a long, long, long time...This election was hers to lose...Nobody saw this skinny kid with a funny name doing the things he has been able to do over the last year and a half...Who knew???

So people must understand that it is not easy for her to be able to walk away from a dream she is so close to realizing after all of these years...At 60 years of age this is probably her last legitimate shot at the U.S. Presidency...Barack is 46 years of age and many people reason that he will have several more tries at the coveted position...But who knows??? There are no such thing as guarantees in this life outside of taxes, wars, death and illness...

Barack is right to demand his time now..He is acting in the spirit of MLK who spoke and wrote of the fierce urgency of now...If not now then when???

When I first heard Barack speak at the DNC in 2004, that night I told my friend who was a veteran of the Peace Corps created by another idealistic and charismatic politician JFK, that Barack will be president by 2012...Even I could not have fathom that he would run as early as he did...

The best way to support a candidate is to be pro and not anti...I am not anti-Hillary, but I am Pro-Obama...We must be careful how we direct our energies...Instead of empowering we could actually be deflating the solution by unknowingly misdirecting energy and focus to the problem...

Here are some Pro-Obama articles I have written...Since this is Black History Month some of them look at Barack's candidacy from that perspective as well:

Tha Artivist Writes: Celebrate & Make Black History Everyday...

"The worker must work for the glory of his handiwork, not simply for pay; the thinker must think for truth, not for fame."
---Dr. W.E.B. DuBois

Hello Family,

I am definitely dedicated to not only celebrating Black History everyday, but also making Black History everyday...Dr. John Hope Franklin, the noted African American Scholar and Historian, once said that you must not only document history in the making, but you must also be active in changing the course of history...

I urge people all the time to use their God-given talents to effect change and to inspire people...Your gifts are never meant for you, they are meant for the world to enjoy and be inspired by...

We are all important messengers...However, many of us will never discover the packages we are meant to deliver...Because we refuse to research the delivery routes taken by others in the past to deliver their messages...

The world's graveyards are full of undelivered packages...Regardless of how late you deliver the package make sure to deliver it!!!

We all stand on the shoulders of Giants, so I would recommend we all take the time to find out whom all those shoulders belong to!!!

I am an Artivist a.k.a. Artist + Activist or one who consciously uses his or her talents to create awareness and effect change in society...

Here are some of the things I have done to bring awareness to the achievements of Black people in our country and beyond:
