Hurston-Wright Writers Week Was The Right Thing For Ms. Herd...

Educators with purpose driven lives: Dr. John Hope Franklin with Ms. Callie Herd the founder and visionary of http://www.ctherd.blogspot.com

I wanted to take the time and provide an overview of my experience at the Hurston/Wright Writers Week. It is my hope that other future writers consider this great opportunity as well.

I am very honored that Dwight Fryer, author of The Legend of Quito Road, provided me the path that I needed in order to seriously try to write a book. Dwight's willingness to help a potential writer has to be commended. One of the key recommendations Dwight provided was The Hurston/Wright Foundation. I immediately added myself to the mailing list and when the promotion of the Writers Week came, I applied and eventually was accepted. The event was held at American University in Washington, DC from July 15 - July 21, 2007.

The Zora Neal Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation develops writers of African descent by creating and supporting networks, communities, and institutions that preserve and promote African American writing. The foundation is in honor of

Richard Wright and Zora Neale Hurston, American Author
In order to attend the event, I was blessed that about 20 individuals provided me donations. The individuals were:

Ronald Herd, II, Lizzie Taylor, Micheal Taylor, Ernest Taylor, Molisa Thomas, Debra Westbrook, Gerald Dennis, Carlise Mathews, Michael Norwood, Belinda Shaw, Aletha Turner, Janice Ousley, Irma Scott, Bernice Sims, Lois Johnson, Charolette Hoyle, Paula Sullivan, Clayvon Wesley, Shelly Guy, Laquita Rallings, Vivian Hodges, and Charles Scott

These individuals will be acknowledged in my first book. Their belief in my dream/vision will also be remembered in my mind as well as those whom may read my book. I also wanted to give special thanks to Devon Hill who believed and had faith as that of a "mustard seed" that I would be able to attend.

You know I really didn't realize the impact of being selected until I attended the award ceremony and they acknowledged that we were, "Hurston/Wright Fellows". Then the honor sunk in and I felt truly blessed and honored.

The workshop was very unique in that we got the opportunity to critique our classmates' works and learned how to make our work better. Our class had a total of 12 people from throughout the country and one from the Netherland. The critiques were very valuable. Our instructor for our class (nonfiction) was Patrice Gaines an established writer and journalist in her own right. (See below)

Patrice Gaines (author of Laughing in the Dark and "Moment of Grace, Meeting the Challenge to Change") - Patrice Gaines Biography

"When we love ourselves, we accept that where we are at this moment is enough."

—Patrice Gaines

When we had our open-mic event, I was very impressed with the youths that participated. There were 3 students in particular from Antigua – The Caribbean that impressed me. Although these youths were from 15 to 17 years in age, their mastery of telling a story was very intriguing. They knew how to command their audience and how to be very descriptive with their words. They kept the audience in awe.

I also got the chance to meet and hear authors: Chris Abari, Mat Johnson, Robin Marcus, A Van Jordan, Eloise Greenfield, Tony Browder, Kwame Alexander, Kevin Wayne Johnson, Angela Nissel, and Anjuelle Floyd (who visit me and my roommate and provided us a breath-taking overview of her new book...it will be a must read when it is published). I even met a potential editor for my book that worked at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC)
My son, Ronald also came for support, but also to promote his book and works. As I thought, he was well received by both founders, novelist Marita Golden and bibliophile Clyde McElvene of Hurston/Wright Foundation. He connected with Mat Johnson and Eloise Greenfield as well. All loved his illustrations for his book.

R2C2H2 Tha Artivist's First Book, James Reese Europe: Jazz Lieutenant:
http://www.jazzlieutenant.blogspot.com

Overall, my son is a great inspiration, because of him, I reached deeper inside to go for my purpose in life. My son also challenged himself to self-publish a book and did. The book name is:
James Reese Europe : Jazz Lieutenant. The book is listed on Smithsonian Jazz book for children (James Reese Europe). The blog is located at: http://www.jazzlieutenant.blogspot.com/ . The blog provides an overview, book reviews ( Amazon's Customer Reviews and John Gilbert), along with excerpts of the book ( Excerpts from Book)

My son book is being placed on various online book sites for purchase throughout the country. Below are some of the locations that you can purchase the book from (click link to retrieve):

Target
Barnes and Noble

Davis Kidd
Amazon (and Borders)

It is my hope that you will purchase the book and also share the information with others. The book would be great as a subject matter for Black History month or any time throughout the year for school students, book clubs or groups. My son is so multi-faceted that he also has his own Alternative News ( http://www.weallbe.blogspot.com site along with Internet Radio show (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/weallbe).
My son is currently finishing up his second book and should have it published in the near future.

As we wrapped up the event, a group of us went to a Poetry restaurant where we talked and discussed various topics. It reminded me of what the The Harlem Renaissance period must have been like. I too felt that each person would be famous and noteworthy in their own right. In talking to each other, me and Dandrea, were great admirers of James Baldwin. I had met Baldwin in the Spring of '78 at UTK (UT Knoxville) and had gotten his autograph which someone took. Deandrea had great respect and even wore a pin in honor of Baldwin everyday. She stated when she purchased the pin at her local post office (a suburb outside of DC), that they only had 2 available. On my last day, I was very touched by Dandrea in that she gave me the pin as a symbol of the signature that was stolen. I was very filled and received her gift and was very thankful that she chose me as a recipient. I will alway cherish her pin and know that I had experienced unselfish giving. She told me that she felt I had to have it and you know in a way, I did. It seem that as we transferred the pin from her to me that I got closure....And it was great.

I close with saying that you should always reach for your destiny and be in the "DO" mode in doing so. Life challenges goes to the man who thinks he can.

Be Blessed......

I wrote this essay about my grandfather in 2001 for an online contest...I re-edited this essay for a little more clarity, but I hope the true spirit and intent in which I wrote this paper about my honorable and beautiful grandfather a.k.a. Soldier Boy Grip comes through none the less...
WHO IS YOUR TRUE HERO???

My true hero is my grandfather, Arthur Taylor, Sr.
... About two years ago my grandfather received several medals, not including the Purple Heart which he should have also gotten, that he earned while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II...It was presented to him by the young U.S. congressman (and current U.S. Senate hopeful), the generous and kind Harold Ford, Jr....This crowning achievement was the result of my mother's hardwork and dilligence in obtaining the documents necessary in securing these military honors. That day was surely one of the happiest in my grandfather's long, steady and storied life.MORE

Jena 6 Update: Jena 6 Spokesperson Verbally Attacked And Life Threatened...

Can You Say “Bait and Switch”?

by Tony Brown

Tha Artivist With Some Jena 6 Fellas: (left to right) Bro. Tony Brown, R2C2H2 and Bro. Marcus Jones (photo by r2c2h2)

Last night, Monday October 29, Pastor Brian Moran (pictured above), the young preacher from Jena who, allowed the family members of the Jena six to meet at the church he ministers , after they were turned away by some local black ministers earlier this year.

Brother Moran called me at about 8 pm and told me upon walking out of a resturant in Jena, a white man he was familiar with did a play on words with his name by calling him “Pastor Moron”. Brother Moran told the man his name and proceeded to his car telliing the individual his name was “Moran”. Moran then told me the man walked towards him in a threatening manner and began kicking rocks on his vehicle. The unidentified man then told him “You might as well be a f–king Moron because that is what you are!” More

Jena 6 Update: Did Color of Change Have A Change Of Heart???

Tha Artivist Says:

New Fans Of The Art Of Tha Artivist: (Left to Right) Bro. Tony Brown, R2C2H2, And Bro. Marcus Jones

I have had Bro. Marcus Jones, the father of Bro. Mychal Bell, on the Tha Artivist Presents...W.E. A.L.L. B.E. Radio Show http://www.blogtalkradio.com/weallbe several times...I actually met him recently in the physical for the first time in a historic event @ Washington University in St. Louis...From what I could gather he seems to be a man truly concerned about the welfare of his son who is currently incarcerated...

Repeatedly he has stated along with another source that as of Oct. 28, 2007 that "they" meaning him, his son Bro. Mychal Bell, Bro. Mychal's mom Sis. Melissa, and the rest of the Jena 6 and their families haven't received any monies from Color of Change http://www.colorofchange.org and other organizations...

I had a loyal listener e-mailed me her interactions with Color of Change as well as with the company that produces their Jena 6 Shirts, Good Storm http://www.goodstorm.com...She was prompted to do so from what she heard Bro. Marcus Jones say on several W.E. A.L.L.B.E Radio interviews...I am in the process of trying to get Bro. James Rucker, the founder of Color of Change, and others in the know to clarify this mess once and for all on my internet radio show, Tha Artivist Presents...W.E. A.L.L. B.E. Radio (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/weallbe)...

It would be a shame to bring down an innovative grassroots and seemingly positive organization such as Color of Change without actual factuals...Right now everything truly seems overwhelming...It seems that everything no matter how meaningful or well intentioned is used to deflect and distract from the facts...There are many battles to be fought but the trick is to choose which ones are truly worthy...There's enough work to last us many moons and lifetimes...As it is often said "No Good Deed Goes Unpunished"...

And Please Believe That Cointelpro Is Still Alive!!! Please stay tuned...

False Allegations On The Michael Baisden Show

Marcus Jones - Mychal Bell's father - was a guest on Michael Baisden's syndicated radio show on Monday, November 5th. He and Michael Baisden used the occasion to attack and slander ColorOfChange.org and our executive director. Baisden continued to do so on November 6th. Both Baisden and Jones made several false and misleading statements which have raised the concern of many of our members.

Here are the facts:

  • ColorOfChange.org has disbursed $210,809.90 of the $212,039.90 collected as of the last reporting period (October 4th). These distributions cover all invoices we've received from the young men's legal teams to date. $33,150.00 was sent to Louis Scott, Marcus Jones' son's lawyer on October 7th (Scott was able to request $35,339.98 but only provided an invoice for $33,150).

Here are images of the deposited checks to the defense teams, proving they received the funds.

  • The Jena 6 families are all aware of how we raise money and how we distribute it. We make payments to their attorneys at the families' sole direction. Within 24 hours of receiving written authorization from the family, along with an invoice from an attorney, we send checks for up to 1/6 of the total amount donated.

Here are the authorizations signed by the families, starting with Marcus Jones'.

  • Michael Baisden claims to have a letter signed by all the Jena 6 families and implies that ColorOfChange.org is acting against the wishes of the families. This is false. One parent, who said she signed the letter, said that it made no mention of ColorOfChange whatsoever. At least two families claim they did not sign the letter.

If Michael Baisden is unafraid of the truth, he should publish the letter and all who signed it.

  • ColorOfChange.org is known by all the Jena 6 families. Our executive director, James Rucker, has met with the families on at least five occasions in Jena and has positive relationships with all of them, with the exception of Marcus Jones.

Michael Baisden's staff know this, because we put them in touch with Jena 6 families with whom they had no relationship.

  • Michael Baisden and his staff know the facts. James Rucker has talked with Baisden directly, as well as Pamela Exum and Yvonne Gilliam who work for Michael Baisden. From the start, we have explained our procedures to Baisden and his staff; we had them verify payments were received by lawyers; we had them verify our process with the lawyers and families--it was in response to an inquiry they started, driven by Marcus Jones' accusations almost two months ago.

In mid-October, Yvonne Gilliam, who works for Baisden indicated by phone that every lawyer she'd contacted had received their checks.

  • Marcus Jones stated that David Bowie contributed $10,000 to ColorOfChange.org's fund and Baisden let the accusation stand. Bowie's contribution was made to the NAACP for Jena 6 legal defense and was widely reported--ColorOfChange.org never came in contact with this donation. A link to the NAACP's press release about that donation is here: http://www.naacp.org/news/press/2007-09-18/index.htm.
  • Michael Baisden has shown a reckless disregard for the truth. Marcus Jones has been making false allegations about us for months. However, responsible journalists check facts and then report accordingly. We've fielded inquiries from CNN, the Tom Joyner Morning Show, Black America Web, and others, based on Marcus Jones' allegations--they all concluded the claims were without merit and refused to give him a stage to speak.

Despite knowing the reality of how ColorOfChange has managed the fundraising and distribution process, Baisden has joined with Jones in launching baseless attacks.

  • ColorOfChange.org exists for one reason: to organize and amplify the political voice of Black America and our allies. Michael Baisden claims to share this goal but he is using his show to recklessly attack an organization that has a clear record of doing the real work he claims is important, in Jena and beyond.

Below is the letter we've sent to members who have inquired.

Dear ColorOfChange.org member,

Thanks for your email. The allegations that Marcus Jones made yesterday on Michael Baisden's show are very troubling to us and we are glad to have the opportunity to share the facts.

To date, Mr. Jones' son's lawyer, Louis Scott, has received $33,150 via the ColorOfChange.org Jena 6 Legal Defense Fund. Mr. Jones is aware that this money was sent to his son's legal team because he signed the paperwork authorizing the payment.

Mr. Jones has made statements challenging ColorOfChange's fundraising repeatedly over the last few months. We have worked hard to communicate with him and he has refused to engage us--we have attended a meeting with all the families which he walked out of; I personally hand-delivered him a letter detailing how funds would be distributed; and we have given information to several people who are close to Mr. Jones, including Louis Scott, Mychal Bell's lead attorney; several of Michael Baisden's staff members; and, at the request of Rev. Sharpton, to the National Action Network Field Director, asking them to make sure he was aware of how funds were being used. I have talked with Marcus, in person, on at least five separate occasions, in Jena, LA.

One hundred percent of the funds raised by ColorOfChange.org on behalf of the Jena 6 go to legal defense for the 6 young men. Donations received by check get processed by us and then sent on to the Jena 6 Defense Committee which is run by the young men's families. Donations by credit card and proceeds from t-shirt sales go into a dedicated ColorOfChange account with Wells Fargo Bank. The funds are then divided 6 ways and we make payments from that account directly to legal teams when we receive authorization from the families. As of the last accounting period, we had paid $210, 809.90 from that account to the legal teams of the 6 young men and have sent over $13,000 in checks to the Defense Committee. This process has been reviewed and documented by ColorOfChange.org legal advisors and vetted by several attorneys working on behalf of the Jena 6.

In order to maintain a level of transparency and accountability with our members who have donated to the fund, we created a page on our website that details how the Jena 6 legal defense money is distributed. Below is a link to that page:

http://www.colorofchange.org/jena_fund/info.html

ColorOfChange.org has explained the distribution of Jena 6 legal defense funds repeatedly, both in written communication and verbally, to Michael Baisden's staff, particularly addressing Mr. Jones' concerns. In fact, Mr. Baisden's staff obtained Mr. Jones' signature on the letter authorizing release of funds to Louis Scott, and followed up with the other young men's attorneys to confirm that they had received their funds from us. His team knows that we have distributed money to the young men's legal teams. We are disappointed that Michael Baisden would allow Mr. Jones to come on his program and continue his attempts to attack our integrity. Mr. Baisden's choice to allow us to be attacked without speaking to us first, or giving us the opportunity to respond, especially given all the information we've shared with his staff, makes us question his commitment to fairness and full disclosure about this issue. It also brings up questions of libel. Further, his acceptance of Mr. Jones' statement that ColorOfChange.org had obtained the $10,000 donation made by Davie Bowie to the Jena 6 is deeply problematic. David Bowie's contribution was made via the NAACP to their Jena 6 defense fund and was widely reported--ColorOfChange.org never came in contact with this donation. A link to the NAACP's press release about that donation is here: http://www.naacp.org/news/press/2007-09-18/index.htm.

ColorOfChange.org will continue to work to bring about social and political change in our community. And we will do whatever is necessary to maintain our good name and the credibility of our organization and our work. It is very important to us that we be a trusted member of the black community so that we can be an effective vehicle for change.

Thank you again for supporting the fight for justice for the Jena 6. We value the trust you placed in us and I hope that this addresses your concerns. Please let me know if you have any further questions for us.

-- James Rucker
Executive Director, ColorOfChange.org

Jena 6's Purvis Pleads "Not Guilty"...

Last Of The Jena Six Teens To Be Arraigned Pleads Not Guilty In White Student's Beating

Updated: Nov 7, 2007 10:46 AM

JENA, La. (AP) - The last of the so-called Jena Six to be arraigned in the beating of a white high school student pleaded not guilty Wednesday to reduced charges of battery and conspiracy.

The trial for Bryant Purvis, 18, was set for March. Purvis had initially been charged with attempted second-degree murder, but that was reduced to charges of second degree-aggravated battery and conspiracy.

The six black teens known as the "Jena Six" were arrested after a December 2006 attack on Justin Barker, who was knocked unconscious.

Their case fueled allegations that prosecutors were treating blacks more harshly than whites, because charges weren't filed against three white teens accused of hanging nooses in a tree at the high school shortly before the attack. In September, the case prompted one of the largest civil rights demonstrations in years.

Four of the other accused teens also had the charges against them reduced after initially being charged with attempted second-degree murder. Charges against the sixth teen, who was booked as a juvenile, have been sealed.

Once united in the Civil Rights Movement, many are now divided over who should control the National Civil Rights Museum. They expressed their views during Tuesday's city council meeting.

"Our friends are not silent on this issue--will not be silent!" said Judge D'Army Bailey.

Bailey and others believe the museum's governing board is too white and too closely tied to big business. The council considered the possibility of taking over. But it dropped the issue during Tuesday's meeting.

"And this business of the state entering into negotiations with this tightly controlled board to continue the status quo will not wash with the African-American community of Memphis Tennessee!" said Bailey.

But plenty of African-Americans believe the museum remains in the right hands.

"Anyone who runs a non-profit in Memphis or anywhere else knows that government cannot do everything," said National Civil Rights Museum President Beverly Robertson.

Longtime board chairman Benjamin Hooks, commended by the council for his Presidential Medal of Freedom, agrees.

"My job is to keep the thing moving," said Hooks. "I've lent my name and enthusiasm to raising millions of dollars and I hope to raise millions more," he added. "It's important."

Opponents claim the museum has been hijacked.

"We have to control our legacy and our history--it's been taken from us," said museum board critic Laurice Smith.

As has, she says, part of Dr. Martin Luther King's dream.

The museum's governing board currently leases it from the state. Final negotiations of a new lease are underway.

City council members say they will re-visit the issue of taking over if those negotiations are not successful.

The NCRM In Crisis~The Battle Of Words : Hooks vs. Younge

The NCRM In Crisis Update: Judge Bailey Holds Court.

Whose History Is It Anyway???

The story of African American's fight for freedom in American has been chronicled, recorded, diluted, even outright lied about by those whose agenda had nothing to do with telling our truth.

The National Civil Rights Museum was founded for the purpose of establishing an institution that would preserve one of the most poignant era's in American history, the story of the Civil Rights Movement; the battles, and losses, and the victories. As the direct beneficiaries of the victories of the Movement, we also inherited the charge of stewarding and protecting the legacy of our fight for freedom in these United States of America. That's what the Movement was about, that's what Dr. King gave his life for, and that's what the National Civil Rights Museum was erected for.

Contrary to what many people believe, the fight for freedom did not end with Dr. King's death. Some people actually believed that the fight for freedom was won with the signing of the Voting Rights Bill. Contrary to what many believe, blacks have NOT ARRIVED, we have not crossed the River Jordan, and WE HAVE NOT REACHED THE PROMISED LAND. The truth of the matter is that the fight for freedom never ends, and if we allow ourselves to be lulled into complacency, we run the risk of losing everything we've fought so hard to gain. If history has taught us anything, it's that Freedom comes with tremendous responsibility, and the degree to which we neglect our responsibility will determine how much of our Freedom we will forfeit. The issues currently surrounding the National Civil Rights Museum will put these axioms to the test.

The community's ownership and control of the National Civil Rights Museum are seriously at risk. However, it's not just about who controls the museum. At the fundamental core of the issue is this question: Whose history is it? The irrefutable answer is it's our history, "our" meaning Africans Americans.

But history notwithstanding, the other pressing questions juxtaposing the issues around the Museum are: If we don't stand up and take control of OUR institutions, who will we give that responsibility to? And in so doing, what will become of the National Civil Rights Museum? Who other than ourselves will take the responsibility of keeping the story of our struggle for freedom in historical context, with the authenticity, the integrity, the respect, and with the ecstatic care that reflects the dignity and pride, and the glory that shines through the triumphant events that were the Civil Rights Movement? Your soul searching answers to these questions, and your "involvement" will decide what happens in the coming days as we deal with these issues concerning the National Civil Rights Museum.

Protecting the integrity of African American History from the authentic point of view of those who "lived" that history is crucial to preserving the story of blacks folks' fight for freedom in America.

The time has come for us to set aside our differences and come together for a greater cause. That cause is the protection of our-story, our history, and the institution we erected for that purpose.

We welcome the support of the entire community, including whites, browns, reds, and definitely "greens", but not at our expense. By the same token, we're not naive enough to believe that support doesn't come with a price tag on it. But the last time I looked there wasn't a "For Sale" sign in front of the National Civil Rights Museum. We dare not grant the pending request for a fifty year lease which would allow others to squander the equity of the integrity of our civil rights institution, or stand by and watch our heritage go up to be controlled for decades by the lowest bidder. I think not. I pray not.

A recent article posted on The Nation, written by Gary Younge gives a compelling overview of how we've allowed the Trojan House of corporate money to take control of the museum.

The time has come for bold action over lip service. Most people in the Civil Rights community know where I have stood for a half century on issues concerning the African American community.

It is my hope that you will share this event with students, parents and anyone you can think of. We must become a village and teach others knowledge so that everyone will have a chance to prosper. And in the end this will be a true "no child left behind" solution. In essences, we grow when they grow. As my friend always say in the closing of her email: Each One Teach One. I choose you to make a difference in someone's life. --Callie Herd, The Organizer And Founder
